I used to dislike pickles on any sandwiches, but definitely not on hot sandwiches. My whole life I ordered burgers “hold the pickle.” Part of it was I didn’t like them warm.
Until the Cubano. I encountered Cubano sandwiches just a few years ago and the pickle seems necessary. I loved it from the first bite. Somehow, it’s still the only exception. I enjoy pickles on the side or on their own, just not on my sandwich. Unless it’s a Cubano - a few extra is fine!
LOVE Cuban sandwiches. And the pickle is VERY IMPORTANT to the total flavor package.
A New Orleans-style Po’ Boy needs dill pickles to be “fully dressed.” And what’s the point of a po’ boy if you don’t order it fully dressed?
YES to pickles on cheeseburgers, along with raw onion, mustard, and mayonnaise.
And that’s pretty much it. I’ll take pickle on the side with a good deli sandwich, pastrami or tongue or brisket or turkey, but not inside the rye bread.
I once worked with two women, one from Tennessee and one from Minnesota, who both swore by bread-and-butter pickles on sandwiches. Didn’t really appeal to me, but I thought it was interesting that they are favored both in the mid-South and the upper Midwest.
Pickles just work sometimes. Not on hot sandwiches, not something where it distracts from subtle flavors, but as part of the mix in a Cuban it makes sense.
My Dad used to say “there is no such thing as too much pickle in tuna salad.” He also always said when served tuna salad… “could use some more pickles.”
I miss him dearly and agree with him wholeheartedly.
I hate pickles on my sandwich, but I always order it with pickles if it comes with it. I throw away the pickles. I like the taste of the pickle juice, but hate the texture of the pickles.
