Pics of Captain America's costume have been leaked

 Did you even look at the pictures? He is wearing body armour.

Yes, I might have. And the Punisher movies, for all their other sins, do a pretty good job of portraying his “powers,” which is basically just shooting the hell out of a bunch of people. So, like Captain America, there’s no real technical barrier to making a good Punisher movie. There is, however, a pretty big narrative barrier, which is that the Punisher really isn’t that interesting of a character. Which is why I went on to say:

Aside from the plausibility angle, this is something I* wouldn’t* say of the Punisher. The primary appeal of Punisher comics is watching an emotionally dead psychopath kill the living shit out of a bunch of acceptable targets in increasingly humorous and over-the-top ways. Which, really, makes it no different from virtually any other action movie made in the last twenty years. Nobody particularly cares about the Punisher as a character, he’s just a vehicle for the violence - and I say this as a big fan of the Ennis/Dillon Punisher.

Captain America, on the other hand, is a genuinely interesting character. He’s truly heroic, in a way that ties in well with the fetishization we have for the generation that fought WWII. The time-lost aspect of his character is a surefire way of creating interesting character conflict, above and beyond the plot conflict of Cap overcoming the villain, while at the same time generating enormous sympathy for the character, in that he dedicated his life to fighting for an America that, for him, no longer exists. And the baked-in patriotism of the character sure doesn’t hurt him in today’s political clime.

This is about as close to a “can’t miss” concept as you can find in Hollywood. Which still means there’s only about a 30% chance this won’t suck. But that’s pretty good odds, for Hollywood.

Then he could fight a before-serum fight in his USO-costume, complete with wings and garish colors. Then post-serum request a more practical costume and personally snap off the wings saying “This looks really silly. Can you just make me a form-fitting helmet that won’t obstruct my side-vision?”

Coming into a thread for the express purpose of spewing contempt for the subject is considered threadshitting.

Don’t do it.

On a similar note the pictures remind me of the movie Zoolander where Derek decides to go back home and work in the coal mines with his father.
I wish I could find a picture for comparisson.

The movie has been made! Has everyone forgotten the 1990 version?! (Hard to believe it was 20 years ago already, I’m getting old.)
Captain America
If I remember right from late-night TV, Captain America did have the wings in this fine example of the cinematic art.

Ah, but they did!

This I totally agree with. Even more than the costume, I hope they get the character right - kind of a Major Winters of “Band of Brothers” in super hero form, the decent and brave citizen soldier.

I like that shot of Thor’s costume even less than the previous one we saw. Something about it makes it look like a business suit to me.

God, I hope this was an ironic response.

Agreed. That was pretty much my first impression, also. He looks like a Nordic mafioso.

Darn you RikWriter! Darn you to heck!

I so wanted to post that. :frowning:

The costume looks okay. They should have had Alex Ross design them. He seems to have a real knack for drawing ‘real’ looking costumes.

You haven’t seen the costume Alex Ross did design, I take it. It looks even less “real” than Cap’s original comic costume.

Hee-hee! From the back it looks like he has wittle wee kitty ears.

Translating just about any superhero costume to a live-action feature is going to be a challenge no matter what. There’s quite a gulf between remaining faithful to colorful drawn hero fantasy art and making it believable in the world of movies and television

Although I could give this a pass for the “reawakened in contemporary times Cap,” the way it’s rendered looks far too much like modern “plastic armor” for 1941.

Helmet wings are too goofy for live-action. We say that we’d like to see them, but I guarantee that if concept art that DID have them, the overwhelming response would be “I can’t believe the went with the wings!” As it stands, the “A” is a bit generic. I would have recommended stencil-lettering for wartime Cap and something with a bit more weight for contemporary Cap. Moreover, I like the idea of helmet in general for Cap and feel like this illustration has it too form-fitting than what it ought to be.

The suspender stripes and shoulder pads are okay, I guess. The stripes solution seems a little forced and unnecessary (exactly what function do they serve?) way to introduce the stripe motif.

I love the way there are tessellated bits of the shoulder pads and wish that they had used that as a translation of the “chain mail” his shirt has been in the comics.

In all honesty, I thought Bryan Hitch’s concept for wartime Ultimate Cap hit the nail on the head.

I think the muted colors are a good way go. I would have favored a darker blue as well. It always struck me as odd that although every American Flag I’ve seen has a dark navy blue field on it, they always put Captain America in a baby-bright blue costume. Darker color adds more weight and looks less clownish.

Not bad.
Pretty good, frankly.

The Flash (YouTube at :32) has wings. It doesn’t look bad on him, but Captain America is a different animal.

They still look like weird, plastic, stuck on decals or something.

My problem with The Punisher is he’s pretty much a direct ripoff of Mack Bolan.
And while I am quite a fan of boobs, boobage, etc., ya just can’t do that in a Captain America movie. The Dungeon Master that doesn’t cite Captain American as an example of Lawful Good alignment probably has not been born. He’s squeaky clean. If he marries, all you’ll see from the honeymoon is a kiss and billowing curtains/pounding surf.

You can totally have boobs in a Captain America movie! Just make sure they’re Nazi boobs, and make it clear that Cap sternly disapproves, and you’re golden.
