Pirate songs

Men isn’t really exclusively about pirates, but rather men at sea. Still, I think it deserves some air play today.

Possibly a stretch - if pirates say “arrrrgh!”, then Cretin yelling “Argh, fuckin’ Billy, my shit stinks!!!” in Fuck My Shit Stinks by the Daylgo Abortions should hopefully qualify.

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald? Maybe there were some pirate corpses floating around in it?

My stupid imagination: every time I hear this song I like to intentionally mishear “He shot the lock from an iron box and a blood-red ruby kissed” as “…and a blood-red rube he kissed.” I have this mental image of a Mad magazine-type illustrated spoof of the lyrics, with a Jack Davis drawing of the pirate captain smooching a furiously blushing hayseed while the other pirates howl with laughter.

All for me Grog - Barleyjuice

Arrrrrrrr, not arrrrgh.

Right. “Arrrrgh” was Joseph of Arimathea’s last word.

I want to sing and dance,
I want to sing and dance.
I want to be a pirate

Kansas City is the home of the premier Pirate themed folk band, the Jolly Rogers.

Here’s a great version of their song, The Devil’s Son

I’ve seen them a bunch of times… they’re a guilty pleasure of mine.

Joni Mitchell’s Pirate of Penance.

“Jim Jones at Botany Bay.”

A South African 70s classic: The Buccaneer by McCully Workshop.

Classic early Toten Hosen: Unter falscher Flagge. Prussian Pirate Punk (sorry…).

Wait, one more Punk Pirate Poem (ok, I’ll stop now with the alliterations): The Sex Pistols - Frigging In The Rigging.

It’s an awesome song. I prefer Maddy Prior’s voice though.

Well, I don’t know about pirates, I don’t, but me and my children like:
Drunken Sailor” (I clean it up to “naughty sailor” and suchforth)
and theSkye Boat song and the Twa Sisters, and Molly Malone, and other Child ballads…
