Pirates of the Caribbean..the Movie.

[hijack, I guess] Movies have always drawn from other sources such as books and real life events. What’s wrong with drawing from more diverse sources, like comic books and TV shows, especially if the movie is good.[/h,ig]

I’d say there’s nothing wrong with it per se, but it seems that’s all Hollywood makes anymore. Original works are being squeezed out by “safe” movies using familiar names. Hell, The Matrix deserves praise for being a major science fiction movie that isn’t based on a novel/comic/TV show. How many of those do you see these days? I suppose you could count Star Wars technically, but the new ones are basically trading on brand recognition of a product that first came out back in the '70s.

Muppet Treasure Island, anyone? C’mon! Some seriously funny scenes in that. And tons o’ pirates too.

I for one really hope this new Pirates movie is good. I’m a big fan of the screenwriters’ website and have been looking forward to seeing if their enthusiasm translated well this time around.

Gaspode–are you talking about the Tiki Room at DL or WDW?
Because last year when we visited WDW, the Tiki Room was there with a new show called “Under New Management” starring Zazu from The Lion King and Iago from Aladdin,as well as all of the original tikiroom birds.

Well no. But the bride IS there…complete with creepy bright red glowing beating heart going thathumpthathumpthathump.:shivers:

–since when? Bruckheimer is a more than competant producer.I think that will be the saving grace of this film…well…that and some witty dialogue.
From the trailer we saw preceding Bruce Almighty

.

I think that this movie should be given a chance to not suck before everybody stomps on it with their big black combat boots. Give it a chance, go see it and then report back as to whether or not it sucks. It may have sucky moments…most movies do. But then again…with good dialogue, a sembleance of a decent plot, some agreeably good actors and great producer, it may turn ot to be a smash hit. One never knows.
But for pirates everywhre…give it a chance.

IDBB (secretly wishing to be a pir-ette…yaaargh!)

From this cool little site… re: the whole bride thing on the haunted mansion.

It’s been a long long time since I’ve been to Disneyland, I don’t even really remember a bride; nor a plot really. But thought I’d throw some fuel on the fire.

On a side note…

A> I don’t see why making a movie out of a ride is any big deal. Or at least any bigger of a deal than making a movie out of anything else.

B> I think Disney is trying to create more publicity for the rides they already have. So they don’t have to spend as much money updating them.

C> I think the POTC movie looks like it could be very cool. Johnny Depp rarely lets me down, and Verbinski can direct a good flick. So its got good stuff going for it.

The movie looks like it could be cool. But it has Bruckheimer…he sucks. We’ll see.

Jerry Bruckheimer’s films are like Chinese food, see. You like them well enough when you’re watching them, but later you feel all empty inside and unsatisfied. But then later still, you crave more…

Since I really hate Disney in most of its myriad incarnations, I’m looking forward to the Bruckheimer-ization. It may well not suck.

ROTFLMAO
Nice analogy,dan.

Hey, it’s an odd craving. I watch his movies, and I’m like, “Oooooooooh… guns! Explosions! W00t!” and then later I’m all “Ugh… I can’t believe I watched it…” and then still later I’m more like “More… must see more…”

That must be why I own the Criterion Collection version of “Armageddon”, dan. And why I spent SIX HOURS watching all the special features as well as the movie like 3 times, twice without vocal commentary, once with.

I had some hopes for this film before I saw the preview for it (at X2 the other night, which I loved, by the way). I usually like Johnny Depp, and Orlando is Legolas, for christ sakes… and Geoffrey Rush has been quite excellent in my opinion (his turn as de Sade in “Quills” was highly entertaining).

All that said, the preview was atrocious.

But I’ll still be obligated to see it because of my partners avowed worship of all things Depp…

Maybe we could change this thread into The Straight Depp Club…

The first trailer I saw for PotC took the film a little too seriously and I had no interest in seeing the movie. At the showing of Bruce Almighty this weekend, they showed a different trailer for PotC. This one was campy and fun and made me want to see the film. Johnny Depp looked like he was having a good time and Orlando Bloom is just…dreamy sigh

Oh yes. I will see this movie. I will.

My husband is really looking forward to this movie. But we virtually never see movies (we did see Finding Nemo, but before that it was Cowboy Bebop and before that I don’t even remember). So I’m not sure I want to spend one of my movie chances on Pirates, especially if there is a danger I might drool over beautiful shirtless men where my husband will catch me.

I’d see that on the following conditions.

A.) Assualt rifles are issued at the door.
B.) People can bring their own just for this movie.
