And. . . mark.
I’m drinking Irish coffee (more like half coffee, half Jamesons). Feeling pretty good.

Oh, you cheeky devil.
gosh, I don’t understand either.
Goddamnit! Here we’ve got a thread with over 1000 responses and still we can get no reaction! Oh, the humanity.
You are NOT paying for the privilege of posting your thoughts here. You are paying solely to do two things: avoid ads and keep the pretty words “Charter Member” under your name.
ETA: Possibly not even the ad part, depending on your browser…
Nice Snark. In the end, it’s somebody paying that keeps this board up on the internets. This whole clusterfuck is a result of that.
Bull fucking shit. I pay to post asi desire.
My specific reasons for my choice are none of your goddam business.
Don’t presume to know why I got a paid membership. I did it because I value this Board, and wanted to help pay for it.
Thanks! I registered with my RL name there; Jill. Hope to see you around.
Me too (except I’m not registered as bluecanary there so you’ll have to work it out ;))
I think it is very amusing that the only thread in which there have been any useful comments by the administration is the thread called “of assholes and dicks.”
Huh–interesting to know
And I don’t think that there’s no rule against linking directly to other boards–unless you’re trying to provoke a flamewar with a board that the Admins are worried about*.
Let’s test, shall we?
Plus there’s the Sn*rkpit, which, under the Giraffe rules we were able to mention the name of, but under the “Pisses Lynn off but doesn’t really interfere with anything” rules, plus Ed’s new “naughty words” rules, the status is unclear.
What’s this “S2” thing I keep hearing about?
Any others?
*Apparently it’s fine to try to start board wars with FreeRepublic–there was a period where there were four or five (justified, but not within the rules) “Lookit the moron Freepers in this thread!” pit threads. Not that I like them either, mind you–the Freepers banned me for being too liberal when I said I didn’t like some of McCain’s positions. But still–rules is rules.
ETA: it’s “too”, not “to” I ken spel!
I really couldn’t remember. I think the rule is that we’re not supposed to link directly to threads on other boards.
See, I generally play by the rules. I’m a safe driver; never tailgate; use my signals; watch out for pedestrians.
Nope–that spate of Free Republic threads that appeared in the Pit* around the time of Obama’s inauguration all linked to either specific threads or specific posts in threads. I asked and was told that that doesn’t count as starting a board-wa unless you actually say “Let’s go over there and screw with them.”
So apparently direct links to other boards/threads/posts are fine and welcomed.
*Repeat, I am not defending Free Republic!
I joined after a decade of just reading and enjoying the boards for free, not to avoid ads nor for the title “Charter Member”. Neither of which I got, not that I was expecting them. I paid for a subscription to emphasize how much I disagree with the action. The pit (as it was) is one of the defining charactaristics of this board. Like the roof tops of Hong Kong, it was wild and free and dangerous. You went there at your peril and with full knowledge of what it was like. If you didn’t know, you learned quickly and with no real harm; unlike (perhaps) the roof tops of Hong Kong. That it will no longer be that way, and curiously, that the danger is now more real (in the possibilty of banning based on the mood of someone whom you have no idea how to gauge) makes it worse in every way. Is this a disaster? In the grand scheme, probably not; but it is saddening and distressing and, so far as one who has been pretty much a disinterested observer can see, unnecessary. I can always cancel my subscription, and find another board to read (and see ads), but I’d rather not. Probably a waste of my money, but dum spiro, spero.
Well said!
(And I love the analogy of the rooftops of Hong Kong.)
<sigh> You may be paying for all sorts of motives. But what you PURCHASE with your payments is NOT the right to post. You can post here without paying. Been that way for some time. So to assert that you are paying for the privilege of posting is making an incorrect statement as a matter of fact.:smack:
Point of order: The board was not free during the last renewal period for charter members. So charter members did indeed pay for the right to post.
Thanks for the tip.
I bookmarked the site, but it needs a little work on the formating. To much repetition on the pages and I seem to have difficulty in isolating replies from the extraneous information. Looks promising though. I’ll come back to it in a couple of months to see if any changes have been made.
One look at the avatars in each post was enough for me. One thing I love about this board is the absence of graphics.
