Right, THAT hyperbolism is what is annoying about Der_Trihs . His posts are among the most eyerolling for me when he inevitably spins into how he and I will be thrown in the extermination camp soon. But… I agree with others, the OP quote here may be an example of extreme interpretation but at least it has a logical flow to it.
There’s always the idea of whether we attribute to sadism (getting pleasure from inflicting pain) vs. sociopathy (not caring who suffers and dies as long as your desires are achieved). So in the OP example: he says “they just care that as many women as possible suffer and die”; I’d say “they don’t care how many women suffer and die in the pursuit of a world where they are put in their place and they’re willing to maximize that toll if it makes it quicker.” It still goes along with a basic idea: they do not care about women’s agency or well-being.
(Some time back I was thinking, Der_Trihs’ apparent basic axiom that the prime mover of a conservative is the desire to see others suffer and die stays within SDMB tolerances because he does not go on to explicitly claim it’s for pleasure.)

Okay, but, did you ever consider how tired so many of us are about it? Using a subject on which I vehemently disagree with Der Trihs - sexual assault - I used to make it my personal mission to educate people on this issue, and it led me straight into suicidal despair. I eventually had to accept that people can be wrong on the internet. There was no other way out for me.
I guarantee you there are women on this board who have had abortions, the same way there are women who have been sexually assaulted and don’t much feel like talking about it because they don’t want their lives litigated by a bunch of strangers on the Internet.
So nobody is obligated to waste precious emotional energy addressing people’s extremist views when those extremist people could educate themselves with a quick Google search. Even if you aren’t personally connected to the issue, that shit’s exhausting, and it’s also pointless for someone with such an established track record of never changing his mind about anything.
Ever is a long time. Once I realized Liberals were overwhelmingly nothing like Der Trihs and had to come up with another explanation for why he is going unchallenged, yes, I understood that it’s because people are sick of engaging with him. 18 years ago when I was a teenager who hadn’t registered yet lurking on the Dope? No, at that time I hadn’t considered that, I thought Der Trihs, Diogenes the Cynic, and Czarcasm were a representative sample of the liberal worldview and that’s why they often went unchallenged.
I am very glad that I found spaces that are as liberal or even more liberal leaning than this board but which don’t tolerate assholes like Der Trihs because that corrected my misperceptions.
This part I totally agree with. No one should feel forced to engage with him, and doing so is not a pleasant experience.

I hear what you’re saying and I did mention elsewhere that it does get old if repeated too much.
But I would emphatically say that if 10, 20, 30 years ago, we dispensed with the equivocation and presumption of good faith, and truly entertained the idea that Republicans want to enslave everybody who isn’t a white male US citizen, make business owners into an untouchable class, and kill or deport anyone who resists, we could’ve gotten ahead of this whole Trump situation a lot sooner.
Like, they’re now simply showing us with their words and actions that this is their goal. People have been calling it out for years, but were dismissed as being hyperbolic and hysterical, simply because it’s hard to believe our fellow citizens are really that awful, and because it’s hard to confront what needs to be done if it’s true. And it is true. And we need to undertake some very uncomfortable actions in response, before it’s too late.
Yes it does get old hearing it, but that’s less about the telling, and more about the discomfort in sitting with the implications.
I tend to agree with @Der_Trihs on most topics. However, when we have disagreed, I’ve found him to be pretty civil. Yes, his position might be hyperbolic or black and white, but when I point out areas of disagreement, he’s been cool with me.
So this pitting does not have the all-important @Mijin seal of approval.

IMO these statements are as extreme and inflammatory as what you accuse Der_Trihs of. Let’s not go flinging around the idea of banning people just because you find them irritating. When you see Der Trihs’s avatar come up in an argument, you could just skip over it.
I am a card-carrying pessimist so a lot of Der_Trihs’s posts just reinforce my jaundiced view of the world. As others have said upthread, I think, sadly, he’s right more often than not.
Yeah, I agree. I married into a Jewish family, but his unnuanced justification of some of Israel’s latest adventures, particularly in Gaza, is very hard to take. And don’t get me started on Bibi.

Funny, but I’ve always thought his username one of the most appealing around here. For whatever reason predisposes - extremely mildly - me to think favorably towards what I am about to read. Whereas with others, whose names spark no such mild pleasantness, I just think, “Oh, THAT crank again!” and skip over. (As I assume many feel about me.)

Just filtering that thread to reading his 6 posts and the snippets he chose to quote to reply to is about all anyone needs to understand his worldview. And, as @Spice_Weasel said, he’s proven far more prophetic than any of the rest of us expected.
I’ve read from reliable psych sources that most depressed people have a more accurate view of the world and their life than do non-depressed people. Sunny optimism is actually delusionally misplaced. OTOH, sunny optimism is what it takes to get through the day withing being immobilized by dread over the present and future. IMO Der_Trihs suffers from no sunny optimism. And also seems to suffer from no depression. Just a painfully clear-eyed view of the civilized world collapsing around his / our ears.
