Pittsburgh Dopefest, Part II: Medea's Child Returns

Even though I am but a pimple on the backside of a Elephant, I have been a Pittsburgher for 13 years so please please can I come?

::hides behind Le Sang and then peeks and then hides again::

I can also recommend other really good resturants. Real Pittsburgh special stuff. None of that TGI Friday’s generic pub atmosphere, real authentic Pittsburgh cuisine.

mrblue: If the hotel doesn’t work out, I have a couch and a sleeping bag you could use. May not be much, but it’s better than staying out in the cold air and it’s also free. Of course… the area isn’t too dangerous, so you could take your chances on the street…

TBA - get out from behind me… makes me nervous.

I’m thinking that moving things up to 6 would probably help Guin a little… though I’ve been known to be wrong. My question is: What keeps us from starting it early in the day and running it until we have to leave?

If it’s in Oakland, why not eat at the O?
Despite my living here for half a decade, I still haven’t had the pleasure yet.

Uh yeah… I guess I could show up if welcome.
I live in Scott Twp.

And, in the event a bullet train is built between DC and Pittsburgh in the next month:

This is starting to come together… You guys are very cool.

Kathryn: Exactly how much “character” are you talking about? Do mean the building is a little old, or do you mean there are street-walkers greeting people on the way in? Could you post the hotel phone numbers here? Or e-mail them to me? Or maybe I’ll just call. I still need to find out whether you’ll be busy at some point during that time and if I’ll need to fend for myself at any point…

TBA: Feel free to make suggestions. Nobody’s going to bite your head off. [sub]Unless you really, really deserve it.[/sub]

Le Sang: I’ll look at hotels first, as it would be less of an inconvenience for you, I’m sure. I really don’t have a problem with any particular time (I AM taking the day off), but I’d hope we can accommodate as many people as possible. I don’t know if an all day deal would sit well with most restaurants unless we reserved a room of some sort. And I did hope to spend some time with Kathryn doing something other than just sitting in a restaurant… But maybe we could do the Dopefest all day Friday and hang out Saturday or vice versa. I’m open to any and all suggestions.

Can all potential attendees please post the times they are available and their place of preference here? Maybe that’ll help.

My schedule this semester will be so screwy that I won’t bother posting available times, but if it fits in, I’ll probably be there. I live down on the CMU end of Oakland, and anything in the Oakland/Shadyside/Squirrel Hill/etc. area (or easily accessible by bus therefrom) is okay by me.

Well, in response to the “I don’t wanna go through Oakland at night” argument, I feel that I should clear one thing up.

Gullifty’s isn’t in Oakland. It’s in Squirell Hill. This should greatly clear up the danger issues, unless you’re really freaked out by Orthodox Jews.

7:00-ish on the 9th sounds as though it could be good, though I may be a bit late, depending on what time I get out of my dorm at school on Friday. I could also do Saturday lunch, probably.

As for room and board, I’d love to put you all up at my house, but I don’t think my parental units would appreciate it too much. Sorry.

Available times, eh? Ok… I am free anytime after 3pm Friday, and not at all on Saturday (well, I do get off work at midnight…).

As for eating preferences, if it isn’t campus food and it isn’t the O I’ll be happy.

Jester: thanks for the image of someone getting freaked out by Orthodox Jews… that’ll keep me amused all day…

;j … ← fleeing…

Please do not make me eat at the O. Yes, it is a cultural Oakland thing, but please. I would like this as an excuse to get off campus. Guin, don’t sweat Gullifty’s its in Squirrel Hill, as Jester says, and its not exactly a high crime rate area. The O…I could understand your worry.

“Charactor” as in time traveling to the twenties. Its the University Club, and it has some rooms available to rent. Its well kept, they frown on college students coming on the property, even though its in the middle of campus, so no bums of any sort. Really pretty stair case, but not your normal hotel feel. Not junkie, by any means. (If you are planning on entering the dining room bring a suit.) Just permeated by this old throwback feeling of people trying to hold on to a dying era.

I’d be happy to give you numbers if I knew them, I’ll see if my family still has them…otherwise I’ll have to find a phone book.

I’m available any time I’m not in class. My clas sched on Fridays is Latin from 11-noon, but you could come to that class, its a party. Then I have Diff Eq from 3-4.

2sence, the O does not need Dopers. Though you should drop by and order some fires, just because.

As stated before, I really have no life. But I also have no ride, so my times are Jester’s times. Right honey? <sweet smile>

And I don’t really have a preferance for where we eat, so long as the food’s at least half-way edible.

I must warn you though. Apparently, the last time Jester went to Gullifty’s, he stood up and made a speech to the entire restaurant… so I hear… And this time, he’ll have a kazoo…

Just a warning! Hope to see you all then!

Fires, eh? No wonder Guin is so concerned about Oakland…

“Three arsons to go, please!”

It’s not the crime-I have to worry about finding a ride back and forth, since I don’t drive…:frowning:

I’d like to meet with some of you Oakland people before the dopefest, the next time I get down to the Carnegie!

How far away are you, Guin? Perhaps you can get a ride from another Doper who’s near you. I suppose I could even come pick you up if it’s not too far from where Medea’s Child lays her head.

Le Sang, do you have a car? If so, maybe I could pick up Guin while Kathryn is in her 3-4 class and then you could bring Kathryn to whereever we end up deciding on. (I already took Diff Eq long ago and do not need or particularly want to sit in on that one.)

Um, could you at least hold me up?

Sorry, Spinnie, I don’t think it’s a possibility. My regrets, but, well, my parents have this weird policy about people they don’t know staying in their house. Again, sorry.

So, is Friday the 9th at Gullifty’s is still the basic sketch of a plan? How far away are you, Guin? Hell, I may even be able to pick you up.

Yep. And it seems like 7:00 is a pretty good starting point.

All the wya in the North Hills, in Allison Park.

Do I have a car… what a question. I’d be pretty worried, on behalf of all those pedestrians out there, if I had a car, considering that I am the last 19 year old in Pittsburgh who doesn’t have a liscense… ah, the joys of being an AF brat living in Europe during high school…

Is that a no? :stuck_out_tongue:

Guin, I have no idea how far that is from Pitt. Somebody help me out…

mrblue, that’s 45 mins to an hour out, if I’m not mistaken…

and yes, that was a no.

I just realized that the 9th of February is the weekend before Valentines Day.

That could be a problem due a romantic commitment to my wife.
We usually go out with another couple that weekend but we haven’t finallized anything yet.

Also, I suspect that Gullifty’s ( and anyplace decent ) might be a madhouse that weekend and the next as well.
