I am about to head off to lunch here, to go grab pizza, and I started thinking about what I wanted to top it with…
What is you ultimate favorite topping?
What is the weirdest thing you have ever seen on top of a pizza?
I cant think of anything extraordinarily odd that ive seen on a pizza- anchovies seem odd to me, but that may be just me…
My new favorite type of pizza is a sourdough crust with roasted tomatoes, mozzerella, spinach and balls of soft warm ricotta cheese with pizza sauce on the side for dipping. MMMMM… I cant wait to eat my lunch!!!
Pepperoni, mushroom, black olive and garlic. Especially if you fry up the pepperoni first in a pan, and then press them in paper towels to remove the excess grease. Makes the pepperoni nice and crunchy.
Weirdest? I haven’t seen any of these personally, but this page has a bunch of really odd ones. Some of them do sound really good, however. Especially the Seafood and the Garlic Steak.
Hey mailman and GorillaMan! Pineapple on pizza is awesome! I was going to post to this thread for the sole purpose of expressing how wonderful pineapple on pizza is. I prefer my pizza just cheese and pineapple, no ham. Just something about the combination of sweet/tangy pineapple, cheese, and tomato sauce makes it really good.
I like just about any kind of pizza short the little meatballs that some chains try to pass off as Italian sausage and anchovies. I just can’t eat those.
My favorite would probably be bacon, pineapple, onion, and peppers from Papa John’s if for no other reason than the garlic butter. I can almost drink that stuff straight… it’s ambrosial.
I’ve worked in a few pizza places over the years. There’s no such thing as a ‘weird’ topping to me anymore; People will eat anything!
The strangest pizza I’ve ever seen, however, I had the great honor of making and delivering myself, so I knew they really wanted it.
An anchovy pizza. No other toppings… not even CHEESE. Bread, Sauce, Anchovies.
They tipped well, as I remember. q;}
My favorite: Pepperoni, and LOTS of it, on top of a thick layer of cheese, with no sauce. Dipped in ranch dressing.
I, too, am of the opinion that pineapple has no place on a pizza… despite the fact that I enjoy a slice of pine-and-ham once in a while. I don’t know why I do… I know it’s wrong… but sometimes it just calls to me.
I just finished the last half of a 12-incher today. I’ll have to put in another order with “The House of Mom”. I wonder if she’d mind if I called her right now? It’s only 11:40 PM…
I’m partial to mushrooms, and I’m not a fan of peppers (particularly green) or onions. If the onions are diced really small, maybe. I suspect a lot of seafood finds its way onto pizza around here. Aside from that, pineapple is about the oddest topping I’ve personally seen, but I don’t really find it odd.
I’m glad to see that spinach has been done, though I’ve never tried it myself, though I’d like to. But what about broccoli? I like broccoli, especially with cheese, so I’d like to think it would be good on a pizza. I’ve tried to convince by mother and sister to make one with broccoli, but to no avail.
I know it tends to smell funny when cooked (kind of like urine, IMO), but it’s not that bad.
My favorite would have to be fresh diced tomatoes- big pieces though,
cubed chicken and mushrooms. I prefer spicy sauce, and cannot stand sweet pizza sauce. My husband and now my parents have owned a pizza place and they have sweet sauce-gross.
If you’re a fan of pineapple pizza, as I am, try it with pineapple and roasted garlic.
I have a friend who makes pizzas. It’s like a passion with him, and he will put damn near anything on top of pizza dough. And some of the things are downright weird - ham and sauerkraut, or scalloped potato pizza (which is amazingly good) or broccoli, cheddar and bacon. My personal favorite is covered with a sauce made of chopped mushrooms and garlic and red pepper flakes and Merlot, all reduced to a lovely mush then spread over a layer of mozzarella and under a layer of shredded fontina cheese - no tomato sauce. He also did one with some leftover olive dip - kind of a tapenade type thing, with kalamata olives, garlic, parsley, pine nuts and sundried tomatoes all processed together and spread over pizza dough - and that was pretty darned tasty too.
The Antidpodean and Asian Dopers are going to start reading this pretty soon. I recommend that you normal people wait until after lunch before reading further.
