For those who are sick of Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know, this is my favourite of his other songs.
These days, this one gets a lot of play.
It’s inspired by the Jorge de Burgos character from the In the Name of the Rose book and movie (the old blind fanatic, remember him?).
That long speech that runs throughout the song, ending with the epic “AMEN!” at the end? It’s taken directly from the Spanish translation of the book.

It’s not good for when you want to get fired up (quite the opposite really) but this may be my favorite piece of music.
Ah, well, that’s an impossible question for me (almost).
In the last few years I’ve recognized Mickey Newbury as one of the best and most important musicians to have ever lived. And from him my favourite song (which I recognize to be different from his best song[s], if that makes sense to you) is I Don’t Think Much About Her No More. The video has the title wrong.
But there are all kinds of songs I love, and records I love more. It’s really a sin giving only one Newbury song. It’s really a whole LP experience to understand any one of his songs.

And I defy anyone to not include Mungo Jerry’s In the Summertime. Even though there’s been some debate about the lyrics, the music is just so…groovy. That’s the first time I’ve ever used that word without sarcasm, but that song is just…groovy.
