Phaedrus, I’ve dealt with conservative Christians of various sorts as long as you have (I’ve taught at an evangelical college, for instance), and while I strongly disagree with most of the religious-right ideology and agenda which is for the most part accepted fairly uncritically on the LBMB, people visiting us from there still deserve to be regarded as individuals, rather than as a group.
If not, then in the name of ‘protecting’ ourselves from them, we would become what we despise. That won’t change what you do, I’m sure, but I’m having none of it.
So welcome, kerux, Nishi, Roxy, Vic, MikeM, and whoever else. You’ll find it challenging (let me tell you, it takes a lot more work to argue your side of a debate when you’re in the minority - speaking from recent experience on the LBMB!) but once the spamming fades into the past and tempers cool, I think you’ll find that people here, for the most part, argue forcefully but cleanly.
RTFirefly: Thank you for your post. You have made me reconsider. You spoke the truth in love and I appreciate that. I am wrong for lumping them all together and I admit that. I am a little edgy though, it makes me feel like there is a wasp in the room, I can hear it but I cannot see it. I would prefer that these “Soldiers of the Lord” show some self-restraint and self-control. If they wish to win my respect they could wait a week and come back. That wouldn’t hurt anything I I think many would have more respect for them if they did.

I have been reading alot of the posting going on between this board and the LBMB and trying to figure out why all of this “mess”(for lack of a better word) was even started. I for one have no problem debating with people who hold different beliefs than I. You can never truly know someone unless you know what they believe and why. I do, however, have a problem with someone who would tell me to wait to express my views in order to “win” their respect. Respect is not won, it is earned. If people would take a little more time listening and less time antagonizing they might accidentally learn something they didn’t know before. Just my opinion though. I personally enjoy learning about others beliefs, don’t know whether or not I would be considered a fundie,but that is neither here nor there. I love the Lord and have a great deal of faith – but some should know by now that you can not force someone to believe – either they do or they don’t – no arguements. Look forward to talking with you guys.

I would venture to say that I do not consider myself a Conservative Christian, I am a 35 year old born again catholic from NY-not a fundamentalist-but, I guess that all depends on your definition of conservative. I do consider myself a strong Jesus following Christian-so, again, i guess it depends on your definition.

You are looking to assign blame which is, many times, a strong indication that a person is tied exclusively to the Ego. Not that I mind, of course, most of us are.

I thought I’d add some background info for the newcomers here.
Overall, it helps to think of the Straight Dope Message Board as organized like a school. Comments on Cecil’s Columns is the advanced class, where sober participants discuss the works of the illustrious Cecil Adams (we know him as “Unca Cece”) . The regular class is General Questions, where questions with finite answers are addressed. MPSIMS is the lunchroom, for casual interactions. Comments on Mailbag Answers is the student newspaper. About This Message Board is the intercom.
Originally there was no Great Debates message board. But we quickly found out that some students were too fidgety for General Questions, so this forum was created to channel their excess energy. Think of Great Debates as a sort of intellectual recess–a place where you can yell and skip and sometimes spin around until you fall down from dizziness and exhaustion. You’ll find less formal instruction here than in the more structured forums, but on the other hand, some of life’s most important lessons are learned on the playground. Like all schools, some of the students display higher levels of maturity than others. And, unfortunately, some of the ideals promoted earlier in this thread, which we all agree with, have, in the past, been realized somewhat more in theory than in practice.
Expect occasional culture shock–it may be a little jarring to find out that some references to “the book of knowledge” by "the master"are talking about The Straight Dope by Unca Cece, but, hey, this is his web site, we’re his fans, and it probably doesn’t hurt to throw in occasional compliments about his brilliant columns or Ed Zotti’s flawless editing of same, in case they are reading this.
I personally think that the more people, with varying opinions, the better. Remember, you are not just addressing the individual persons who post to a particular thread–they may be the least important people involved–since your words are also being read by many other people who review the thread without posting.

I wasn’t implying that Clark had done those things, I was making an example of the type of question that was asked of me. How is this an infraction of the rules? I expect a reasonable answer here to a reasonable question.
Phaedrus, I am not nor have I ever been Clark. Cool it. I have never posted under another name, nor do I intend to. I would not have to ask who squealed, either.
Gaudere: I have no reason to doubt that you aren’t Clark, I find it interesting though that you thought I meant you. Hmmm. I see that you were right all along about welcoming the newbies. I am sensitive towards them, they can be vicious but that doesn’t mean I should lump them into a category. I was wrong.
