I’m planning to tape all 24 episodes and then watch them in real time.
So, yes, I am insane.

I may be amiss here, but is the show in actual real-time? I know that it covers a 24 hour period, but I was under the impression that it jumps around within that period.
But I could most definitely be wrong. Plus, I forgot to set my VCR, and I don’t get home until 8:30.
I understand that it is supposed to be real time. Every hour of show is an hour of the day in question. Episode one is hour one and so on.
KneadtoKnow - You’re planning to stay up 24 hours, no sleep, and watch one show?
Trion, yeah. And I’ll  right along with you. I’ve had the idea of taping a whole season of something and watching it all at once since FX re-ran all the major conspiracy-related episodes of The X-Files a few years ago, like four or five episodes a night for a whole week. What a way to catch up!
And though I may have been misinformed, I heard the real-time story, too.
Yup, it is in real time, but it will have commercials. I bet if you zip through them it will probably take about 19 hours to watch the whole season.
Well that’s a relief! Because 24 hours would have been right out.
Since I have class on Tuesdays, and I have a heap o’homework coming up, I think I may just tape all of them as well. It’ll give me something to do this summer!
I thought part of the enjoyment of a hot TV show is chatting and speculating about it while the show is still on the air. What is it that you think you will get out of your 24-athon that will reconcile you having to vigilantly avoid conversations and editorials about the program? Not criticizing, BTW, just curious. You must not have water coolers at your work.
I’ve heard hardcore Twin Peaks fans say that they kind of liked the week of anticipation before the next episode as opposed to watching them all in a row.
Billy Baroo, stories which utilize innovative narrative technique give me a big thrill. Usually this means that I look for things like interesting manipulation of point-of-view (e.g., Fight Club or Bright Lights, Big City, which I’ve finally gotten around to starting to read) or time (e.g., Memento or the great Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Cause and Effect”). Movies and TV shows which strive to tell their stories in real time certainly qualify. For some reason, I keep missing Nick of Time when it’s on cable, but I thought 24 might give me a chance to really experience a long-format story told in this style.
I do enjoy the built-in suspense of an ongoing weekly TV series. The Sopranos is my current favorite in that vein. 24 is something new and different though (if we’re lucky), so I’m looking forward to enjoying it in a new and different way.
pezwookie, I never got in to Twin Peaks, despite a couple of well-intentioned attempts, but I can certainly imagine the feeling. I used to get that kind of anticipation from The X-Files, when I watched it. See also above coments on The Sopranos.
24 may not stand up to this kind of viewing. If not, I’ll have wasted one day. I’ll feel less used, I think, than if I watch it for a full season and it winds up sucking.
Oh, and I should add as a note of irony that I forgot to set up a tape yesterday.
I understand Fox or FX maybe is rerunning them on Friday nights? Sunday nights?
I pause here for your unrestrained laughter.
A cheesy voice over at the end said to tell my friends about the encore presentation on Fox Friday night.
We aren’t really friends. I am more of a well wisher (in that I don’t wish you any particular harm). Thus, I am not going to tell you about the encore presentation on Fox Friday Night.
You really should give me a chance, watsonwil. I’m not nearly as big a jackass as I come across here on the boards.
I even get sly Simpsons references.
Would you consider “chum”?
If you’re still taking applications, I’ll go for “buddy”.
But I was going to mention yesterday that maybe you should watch the first episode before you dedicate 24 hours of blank tapes and setting up the VCR for 5 months. I watched last night’s episode just to make sure. For the record, I’ll be continuing with the plan to tape all the episodes.
Just a suggestion.
I know this may be in violation of the subject line, but if you aren’t planning on watching the first episode as a test, here’s a review with no plot spoilers :
technical spoiler space (that is,
a spoiler about technical aspects,
not space for what would be
technically be called a spoiler,
using the word ‘technically’
figuratively.)
The show takes place in real time – and there’s a large digital clock that appears before and after commercial breaks. Commercial breaks are ‘lost time’, so that the clock is counting (and you can see exactly how much time is spent between commercials). I.e. they might go to commercial at 12:37:00 and come back at 12:39:30 .
Not unsurprisingly, clocks are featured often as well – though that might just be a first-episode thing to get into the spirit of it.
One noticeable technique that is used are simultaneous ‘panes’ using multiple cameras, like in the movie Time Code (or the NFL instant replay review camera). The action seems mostly limited to the same scene shot from different angles, though, so you don’t have the separate plot threads on-screen at the same time. Except in rare cases, like if one person is looking for another or calling them on the phone, you might see what the other person’s doing at that moment.
As for the quality of the show, I’d say it’s as good as or better than anything on televison (not that I watch a lot of shows), and the novel presentation makes it worth it to watch. One thing I really like are shows that know that they have to quit[sup]*[/sup] – they tend to put more thought into their episodes. So I think it will be worth the wait if you get the whole show.
***** minor spoiler below *****
and it would be interesting if you actually watched it on the actual day that it is set on. (You would not have to wait long after the end of the show.)
[sup]*[/sup] shoot me if they make ‘Another 24 Hours’, in which Kiefer Sutherland teams up with Eddie Murphy.
I’m touched, Munch … I mean … :sniff: buddy!
Yeah, I know. It’s very nostolgic - almost Steinbeckian, if you will.[sup][/sup]
[sub][sup][/sup]I know I will.[/sub]
So, Twisty, how was not watching the show for you last night? VCR still working?
Personally, I took great enjoyment out of labelling my blank tapes (all four of them). They’re all labelled:
“24” 12:00am - 6:00am
“24” 6:00am - 12:00pm
“24” 12:00pm - 6:00pm
“24” 6:00pm - 12:00am
I’m giddy with anticipation.
Hey, buddy!
It’s going great now that I’ve got the day straight. I actually missed Fox’s Friday re-run, too, if you can freaking believe it. Got in too big a hurry to go see Heist and completely forgot to set up the VCR.
Fortunately, FX re-ran it on Sunday night at midnight. Whew!
:shame smilie:
Twisty, Kneady, it’s all the same…
I was gonna let it slide.
Though now I’m thinking of that “Lt. Broccoli” scene from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
