Please explain the Jason Statham LG commercial

I know it’s tough guy actor Jason Statham in different roles. And I know it’s a commercial for LG phones. Other than that, it doesn’t make a damn bit of sense to me. It’s like a nonsensical fever dream. What the hell is going on and what is the point? What is the fireball that shoots out of the cafe? Why is this supposed to make me buy an LG phone?

Well, you know that it’s a commercial for LG phones, so it accomplished its first goal.

My idea is that the phone is so great at games and/or watching movies that you mistake it for real life? And that if you have no imagination, all the characters look like you, Jason Statham. You’ve got so into your phone that it has sucked into a virtual world that’s a cross between The Matrix and Being John Malkovich.

I don’t think that is a good thing. “My LG phone - it makes me confuse movies with reality.” Or, “LG - Why go into the outside world at all?”

There’s technical ads, lifestyle ads, and high-concept ads like this one that are just supposed to be interesting and get people talking, like most old spice commercials. This one just falls flat. It could be an interesting concept, like when John Malkovich enters his own body and everyone becomes Malkoviches, but there’s no setup here, nothing to explain why any of the stuff that’s happening is supposed to be interesting other than the fact that they spent a lot of money on it. “Hahahaha, it’s a baby but it looks like Jason Statham,” laughs no one.

eta: OK, lifting up a Statham mask to reveal a Statham is a bit clever.

Commercials are supposed to make you think of the product. When I first saw this commercial, I thought they were advertising a new video game. Or maybe a bad LSD trip? I didn’t realize it was for LG phones. If buying an LG phone will help me understand this melted-mind video, I’m not interested in LG phones.

If I’m ever stupid enough to buy another LG phone, I hope Jason Statham roundhouse kicks me in the head.

The music is a remix of a popular Hatsune Miku song "Levan Polka. That’s all I care about.

So, one of the big deals with the LG G5 is that it had a modular expansion slot along with a bunch of other accessories.

So it looks like they decided to try and put together a commercial featuring a replaceable battery, a camera expansion module, a little robot, a VR headset and a 360-degree camera, all in one narrative, without just describing them. That’s likely to result in a jumbled mess no matter what you do.

Ya’ll are haters. That commercial is great, especially Jason Statham in a Jason Statham mask. I’m going to go buy an LG phone.

Hope you never need customer service. LG sucks ass.

Thank you! I knew the music was familiar, but the electronica and the “Watch me now” had me confused. I’d heard the tongue-twisting Finnish folk song versions by Loituma, that the Hatsune Miku version derives from.

And, oh, as far as the visual elements of the commercial go, what a mess. I can't watch it, it makes my eyes and brain hurt. I once had an LG flip phone, but switched to iPhone and have never looked back.

Wow, if that’s what they were shooting for they wasted a lot of money. I barely got the LG brand out of it, and that was only after intentionally looking for it while trying to understand anything about the commercial.

And it also makes my eyes and brain hurt. Can’t bear it anymore.
