Please explain this gag to me

In Shallow Hal, Hal is introducing his girlfriend, RoseMary, to his best friend. She extends her hand and says, “Hi, nice to meet you.”

The friend gawks at her (she is very large) and says, “Holy cow! I mean, uh… hi.”

She nods with a smile, notices his jacket, and asks, “Is that a Member’s Only jacket?”

He smiles and says, “Yes, yes it is.”

She says, “What are you, like, the last member?”

Hal lets out a hardy laugh and says, “Oh, man! One up for Rosemary. I told you she was good.”

Why was that funny? And why did it put her one up?

“Members Only” is a brand of jackets which was popular in the 80’s. Still having one would be pretty amazing, and therefore, the 'Last Member" joke is funny.

Ah! Thank you, Anahita!

For the record, I had to explain that one to Astrogirl as well.:stuck_out_tongue:

I still have my Member’s Only jacket. Haven’t worn it for quite a while, though.

I also still have my cherry red Converse high-tops. Still wear those every once in a while.
