I just bought A Clash Of Kings, the second book in
the series. But it’s been many years since I’ve read the first book & I remember
almost nothing about it (I read way too many books and have a horrible memory ).
So could someone please give me a cliff notes version of the first book
so I’ll be up to speed and can start the next one? Thanks!
Wikipedia has a reasonable synopsis.
Direwolves!
Jamie pushes Bran!
Tyrion the Dwarf!
Ned’s dead!
Hodor!
Jon Snow!
Ok…that’s ummm…pretty much exactly what I was looking for - thanks!
The King in the North!
The King in the North!
THE KING IN THE NORTH!
Go read the part where Syrio Forel fights the guards that come to capture Sansa at least. That was so badass.
I’m finding that each of the books so far tends to have one or two ‘badass’ moments, and I tend to feel like I’m sorta plowing through to get to them. Don’t get me wrong; I love some of the character studies. The growth of Anya, Jamie, and the Hound seem particularly cool. It just takes a lot of fortitude (and sometimes just downright ignoring bits) to choke down the ‘who rules where and is related to whom’ chapters.
That would be Arya that they’re coming to capture, not Sansa. (Says the smartass who’s currently rereading the series.)
Yes, you’re correct. How do I get Syrio Forel correct, but not which daughter it is?
Also read the part where Arya and Sansa are arguing over breakfast and Arya throws fruit at Sansa.
I need to reread this series, if only he’d finish the next one I’d have a reason.
Eddard Stark gets beheaded in the final chapter.
Yep, I’d say that’s just about the textbook definition of the Crowning Moment of Awesome.
Though it’s probably topped as a CMoA in A Storm of Swords when…
Jaime goes back to rescue Brienne from Harrenhal and leaps unarmed (literally) into the bear pit.
Mkay, just finished Feast for Crows. Having a speculation moment. Will include spoiler box. Deals with Brienne’s adventures in that book.
In the last chapter of Brienne’s involvement, she’s being hanged, and it says she yells out one word. Any speculation as to what the one word she’d yell out to the Stone Queen would be?
I’m guessing “Sansa!”
Freeeeedoooom!!!
“Jaime!” would be a likely candidate?
I could maybe see it being ‘Sasna’… But the Stone Queen already decided she didn’t believe her oaths… If it was more than one word, I could see it being “Anya is alive!” (Seeing as she has reason to believe that now) but they did specify -one- word. “Jamie” would’ve been interresting if they plan on it being her dying word, but I’d really like to see Brienne’s story continue… (And speaking of Jamie, his last moment in Feast had me literally going, “YES!” For those that have forgotten…)
Cersi is -finally- getting a come-uppance, being held by the church for her crimes. She sends a desparate letter to Jamie to come champion her, and after its read to him, he says, “Throw it into the fire.” Crowning moment of awsome, right there.
Of course, back to Brienne, one wonders if her last word was something to save herself, something to save her companions, or, quite simply, ‘last words’.
Oh good lord, just thinking… If her last word is ‘Saphires’, I’m gonna have to waylay a certain author in a back alley.
It’s been a while since I read them…I don’t get this?
She comes from the Shaphire Isles, and Jamie had told their captors that her father is rich in Shaphires (how the Isles got their name). He suggested ransoming her instead of rape and killing her. Saved her life.
I am also reading the series again, and am just starting book 2. Was at B&N the other day, and looked up book five. They have a release date of 2013. The employee said that the date is so far away because a release date hasn’t been set, but I am thinking it is probably pretty close to the truth.

It helps with the explanation if “sapphire” is spelled correctly.
And, I never considered that she would say something just to save her skin, but it fits with how most people act in martin’s world.
