PNW DopeFest Whidbey Island

Let’s do it! The Clyde theatre in Langley is showing ‘Monsoon Wedding’ at 6:00pm, Saturday, June 22. Across the street from the Clyde is the Dog House Tavern & Backdoor Restaurant, home to the best Fish & Chips ever, with Guiness and Boddington’s on tap.

Meet as early as 4:00pm in the tavern for drinks and snacks (sweet potato fries, anyone?), then off to the movie. Return to the restaurant after the movie for dinner.

The restaurant is located behind the bar, and has a nice view of Saratoga Passage. The menu is quite varied, with several vegetarian choices. Entree’s are about $10.00.

The tavern has many beers on tap – Pike Street Kilt Lifter, Fat Tire, Porter ESB, Guiness, Boddintons, Spire Mtn. Hefe & even Pear Cider. Pints of Guiness are $4.00.

Note that both the restaurant and tavern do not take credit cards – and local checks only. Bring cash.

The Clyde Theatre is a charming small town theatre with newly revamped seats and a good sound system. Tickets are $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for seniors and kids. Popcorn is $1, $2, and $3, candy is .75-1.00. Soda pop is .75, 1.00 and 1.25.

There is free bus service on the island, but it stops at 7:30, IIRC. The ferries run every half-hour until about 10:00, then every hour until about 2:00. Car and driver are $7.00 each way, passengers are $3.20 to the island only.

The community transit #170 bus runs every half hour from the Lynnwood park-and-ride to the ferry terminal. Cost is $1.00. Last bus is about 10:30, IIRC.

I’ll double check all the details, and post links later. Let me know if a different time/day is needed. Maybe somebody who’s on more often (Scotti?) could start a list of attendees?

I just wish I could make it up there… Unfortunately, I work Saturdays

Cervaise and I would love to be there, but there might be a problem. I’m going to a conference in Palm Springs the week before, and fly back in on the 22nd at 8:30 pm.

Is there any chance of moving it back a week, to the 29th? Danalan, can you check to see if the movie will still be there the next Saturday? I hate to be pushy*, but I need to know by tomorrow (Wednesday). There’s a chance I can change my ticket if the gathering can’t be moved, but I have to know tomorrow.

AudryK, you and you sweetie have got to make it to this thing. Whidby Island in general and Langley in particlular are wonderful and not to be missed. Plus, you get to ride the ferry!!!
*Actually, I love to be pushy, but I try to keep it in check.

-k

I’m always happy to help, Dan…in any case, as far as I know 4PM on the 22nd works for me, and you can count me in as an attendee.

I hope to see all my old friends again, and to meet new PNW Dopers “en masse!” It would be helpful if some of you who are in communication with other PNW Dopers off the board could pass the word on to them? Some occasional posters (and lurkers) might miss this thread otherwise.

Scotti

Hee…the 29th works for me, as well.

Either or.

::waves at katrina herownself!!!::

And the Dog House - the Dog House is the most fun place to eat in Langely. No kidding about the fish and chips, and they have oyster chowder too. I personally won’t touch the stuff, but my sweetie says it’s great.

Actually, if we can move this to the 29th, perhaps those of us who want to can meet earlier and play around in Langely. There are galleries and fun shops (expensive and otherwise) - I got my most favorite pair of black shoes last summer in Langely. My friends are jealous of how incredibly cool those shoes are.

There’s a beach to walk on, and sometimes there are whales. To be fair, I’ve never seen one there, but we might get lucky! The glassblower’s studio (Hellbore) is really great, and if we call ahead and he has work to do we might even be able to go around to the viewing area of the studio and watch the glassblower working! Last time we were there the shop/studio manager said such an arrangement might be possible.

Folks, we really ought to do this. But please, please lets do it on the 29th so I can be sure of being there.

Simulpost! Hi Scottie!

Sounds good to me!

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make it, but if I can get transportation, I’ll do my best.

If you can get to Bellingham, Bob, you KNOW you have transportation. Time to ride the old Grey dog, methinks!

How is your shoulder?

{{{{Bob}}})

If it moves to the 29th, I MAY have time to change my schedule around (hope so, anyway)…

On the 29th, the movie is ‘About a Boy’, with Hugh Grant. Not on my list to see, but I’m game. I’m going to go to ‘Monsoon Wedding’ anyway, so moving the dopefest to the 29th is fine with me.

And…

Anyone who want’s to join me on the 22nd is still welcome to.

The fish & chips at the Backdoor are sooo goood!!! I had them Sunday night. They really are lightly battered, so light and tender. To make the chips, they slice fresh potatoes lengthwise and fry 'em up – just like at home. Mrs. Danalan had the barbequed pork sandwich, she claims it’s the best she’s ever had.

You really can spend all day in Langley – it’s just filled with interesting shops. There’s a tremendous clock shop – the owner has basically turned a hobby of rebuilding antique clocks into a retirement business. You can get tea and sushi just around the corner, and the antique store across the street has expanded to three buildings now, but you can still barely walk in.

Local artists have a co-op gallery, and I’ve lost count of the number of other galleries. The jewelry store in Lind’s is just amazing, and the selection in the Star grocery is world class.

Did I mention I really like this town?

Good night, all.

One more request for the 29th.

I’m flying down to catch David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar at The Gorge which, unfortunately, is also on the 29th.

I can only hope for a pre- or post-dope gathering, if indeed the date gets bumped back.

So, what’s it going to be? I need a decision here, folks.

22nd - good movie, but I probably can’t be there and I assume that Cervaise is planning to meet me at the airport at 8:30 pm. Right, honey?

29th - not such a good movie, but guaranteed attandence and enthusiasm by myself and Cervaise.

aww, I can’t make either (that’s summer in the Conference business fer ya)! I’m going to Whidbey around Labor Day, though, so I’ll check out the places mentioned here!

If anyone can come to Seattle for a dopefest, I’ll be more likely to make it… (hint, hint!)

I haven’t seen either About a Boy or Monsoon Wedding, but I understand they’re both fine. The latter, perhaps, is a better film, but I’ll cheerfully see the former if that’s what’s playing.

Because, you see, if this is held on the 22nd, neither I nor my wife will be there – see her description of the airport shuffle above.

If it’s on the 29th, we’ll happily meet anybody in Langley at 10am or 11am to browse galleries, walk the beach, and so on. For anyone who has never done this, I highly recommend it.

Oh, and I’ll second the opinion of the fish-n-chips at The Dog House. I mentioned this on the other thread, but as far as I’m concerned, they’re the best fish-n-chips in Washington State, and I’ve not had better on the West Coast. (The best fish-n-chips I’ve ever had were in Fiji. Won’t be back there anytime soon.)

So: Do we have a consensus on the date? Yes? No? Confused muttering? Bueller?

Hmmm. Would anyone be against having a get-together both times? That way, everyone can make it to at least one night. I’m not sure if this will be okay for everyone who has to drive a bit to make it. We could do the movie and a dinner on the 22nd, and make the 29th’s evening a dinner and tour of the place.

It’d be cool to meet everybody. I’m apparently in a meet-as-many-people-as-I-can mood right now.

We can do a Seattle 'fest later, stargazer, even if it’s just a minifest with you, me, and KKBattousai. We’re always game for a movie or coffee or dinner or whatever.

Drat - my last post seems to have been lost in cyberspace.

The upshot was that since there seemed to be no final decision about dates, my plans are finalized and unchanged. Cervaise and I won’t be available on the 22nd.

AudreyK, since some of the regional folks have to make quite an effort to travel, I think it’s probably best to pick one of the two dates. If it’s the 29th, of course that wouldn’t prevent anyone from heading to Langley on the 22nd to catch dinner and a movie as well as coming on the 29th. I just don’t want to risk splitting the group up and not giving everyone a chance to see everyone.

Can you tell I’d like to have the official gathering on the 29th? I’d really like to see everyone, it’s been too long.

I’ll plan on the 29th. I will meet you all there at 11:00AM for browsing and visiting and so forth and so on. Snacks at the Doghouse and the movie in the evening. I will bring rjk if at all possible. Depending on Bob’s schedule, we may or may not stay for dinner after the movie…assuming Bob comes, that is. All of which can be decided later.

And we are still tentatively planning a Seattle DopeFest on July 19 and a Vancouver DopeFest on July 20.

And you’re right, honey…it HAS been too long!

To recap – Mrs. Danalan & I will be at the 6:00pm showing of ‘Monsoon Wedding’ at the Clyde on June 22nd. We would enjoy hoisting a brew or two beforehand with old or new doper friends, at the Dog House Tavern, around 5:00pm. I am quite recognizable – I’m huge. I’m officially 6’3", but I think I’ve been growing. I’ve certainly continued to grow girth-wise, I’m well over 300 lbs. My hair is blondish and curly. I’ll have a black-and-tan close by, if not in, my hand.

The ‘official’ dopefest is on the 29th, we meet at 11:00am in the Backdoor restaurant for snacks, then tour Langley at our leisure until seeing ‘About a Boy’ at 6:00. We may want to meet as a group again for dinner – either at the Backdoor or elsewhere – before the movie. I’m thinking around 4:00, as we’ll want to be in line for the movie by 5:30. Everyone will have some distance to travel home – hell, I live on the island and I’ll have a 20 mile journey – and I worry about everyone travelling so far late at night. Besides, touristy browsing always gives me an appetite.

Any thoughts?
