Morning all! Up and caffeinating and …

HAPPY FIRDAY!!!

Oh yeah!! {{{{{kai}}}}}; hope that the dental visit goes okay. And more hugs for Dotty–at least your hubby stood up for you to his mother, there is that. Sorry that HRH is snot faced though.

I know there’s more … I’m just not sufficiently caffeinated quite yet. Ah well, at least it is Friday.

Didn’t you mean:
HAPPY FIRDAY!!! tarra?

Congrats on getting to your last day, BooFae!

Hope HRH is less snot-faced soon!

Barely awake. Need to put more stuff away. (Although I hauled a bunch of stuff to the basement last night, so now there’s less of it to do. Yay me!)

Might not be back till tomorrow…

GT

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’ here. I’m already at the office. Another easy commute from the kitchen to the study today. I did work for a couple of hours last night cause I wasn’t sleepy so if I be a good bear and stick with it I should get through the rest of the pile in two to three hours this mornin’.

mika there are no words to describe what your cousin did. Addict or not, stealing ceremonial oil to sell for drug money is just so low and reprehensible. There should be a relative who can kick his butt around, right?

dotty sorry HRH still has a cold, poor baby. Yay on hubby for standing up to MIL though.

BooFae yay on last day and good luck with the new gig.

kai here’s hopin’ the dentist visit goes well. I hate goin’ myself.

SmartiePants AIR y’all are leavin’ today right? Have fun!

MinDude ya really should go get that seen about. Whether the calf muscle is torn or not, it ain’t a good thing to have a lot of pain when you walk. Unca swampy has spoken.

rigs I hope today is better.

Ok, Ima go eat me a bagel and cream cheese, get some more caffiene and get busy.

Later Y’all!

Um, so I have this iPod Nano. And I downloaded/uploaded/imported/deported/what
everthehell to it from my iTunes last night and left it to charge.

I can’t disconnect it. Oh, the symbol for do not disconnect finally went away and it’s been “synced” etc, but I cannot get the one end of the adaptor out of the iPod.

I’m cutting my losses and going to work.
Mika--that’s terrible. I have to ask though–is that oil so expensive? No offense meant, but really, how much can someone get for some oil? And if they know it’s from a temple, wouldn’t the buyer then be :dubious: . (saying that he couldn’t sell it as sacred oil, could he?)

BooFae–at some point today, I am going to hoist a glass to you. I’ll miss the TK stories, though.

Mindy–you may have just strained the muscle badly. Still, if it is no better today, I’d see a doc. You don’t want a permanent injury to come from this, if it doesn’t heal properly.

Off to work. I dreamt of work last night so feel like I’ve already been there. Blech.

Sorry to tell you, GT, that it’s

***HAPPY FIRDAY! ** *

Yays, hugs, boos, and wet trout as appropriate.

Happy Firday!! SummerFest was fun, mostly kids stuff, but they were giving away street hockey sticks. They had a few of the players talk, and they showed the Miracle at Molson. Nothing like watching Theodore collapse like a Hrung.

Hope they can fix the tooht, kai.

Boofae, are you going to moon TinKnickers on the way out?

Mork, go to the doctor.

rigs, sorry about the idjit.

Mika, that’s terrible.

{{{MMP}}}

Yay for last day, BooFae! Too bad TinKnickers won’t be there to see you go. We will miss TinKnickers stories, though! Please designate a new TinKnickers title on someone at your new job. I just love to hear it - TinKnickers! Heh.

Work is calling. I donwanna answer. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yesterday was bad. But I did get one of the Big Cheeses of the English Department to send an email to Financial NonAid telling them that yes, I can be over 30 hours and still be eligible for the** one semester** I need to finish my thesis so please FOAD.

And I gained back two inches I thought I had lost. This week can FOAD as well.

Okay, so, after five and a half hours or so of sleep, I can report that the calf does actually feel a bit better. I’m still shuffling like a 90-year-old with Popeye candy sticks for bones, but it no longer hurts much at all to put weight on it. I can still only take half steps with the left leg, but it only sends me a sharp warning if I either try and take it too fast or push it too far. Otherwise it actually feels kinda okay. There’s a very distant dull ache right now, but that’s mostly from the morning’s exertion.

So maybe it wasn’t quite as bad as I thought – you might be right, Rigs, it may just be strained badly, which is a relief. From the description of the Wiki article it sounded half right, but the symptoms didn’t fit. (There’s still no lividity or swelling, toes still point straight out, etc.) It certainly doesn’t feel doctor-worthy today, anyway.

I’m just going to make sure I don’t have to do anything today that involves movement.

Nevertheless I was calorically naughty; I bought some comfort food. Caramel-filled “poppers” – which are really just miniature sponge cake muffins. Filled with caramel. Mmmm. Caramel.

On the way to work though I saw that someone ran over a bunny. A lot of someones, actually. :frowning:

Swampy - No, it’s not bad – but you needn’t worry, 'cos I’m mobile, if only just, which is more than I can say for how I was feeling last night. No doc for me unless I do something stupid and really do a number on it.

BooFae - Congrats on surviving your last day! I’ve never understood the point of an exit interview though. Is that just like a kind of personalized, corporate comment card? Sort of a “How are we doing?” thing? Or is that where they want to see if you badmouth them so they can give future employers bad references when they call? (Conspiracy theory at work. :)) It just seems like such a pointless task.

SmartyPants - Ooh, I could use summa that. Last night it was aching pretty good there, and that Tensor heat patch – which admittedly had been sitting around here for a couple of years – did jack. It got moderately warm for about half an hour and then died out. Which was okay, because it wouldn’t stick to my skin anyway. I need to pick up some of the cream.

Roo - Thanks. They seem to have worked.

Good morning, all. Happy Firday!

Mindy, I am sorry about your calf muscle. Hurts, I’m sure!

Swampy, I’m mailing that ass-kickin’ over there Express Mail. More on this in a moment.

Dotty, your post made me very angry. It’s another brick in my wall against having kids - the one thing that would make my mom more involved in my life is having kids, and I know she’d be an interfering old busybody. And she wouldn’t tell him he was a bad parent, she’d tell me. Right to my face. Especially since I would never raise a daughter with the morals she raised me with (Sex is BAD, it’s the worst sin ever, mmkay?)

rigs, sorry about your mean lady, forgot to say it before.

So about this uncle’s family. He was the eldest of five. On one hand he is reaping what he sowed, no doubt about it, he raised his sons badly with tons of entitlement and now they are biting him in the ass. Well, were. OThe eldest was a wife-beater untill my aunt taught his wife saloning (whatever you call it!) and put down the money for her own salon, in her own name. Now she brings in more money and he doesn’t dare to hit her or even yell at her as much in case she goes home to her maike (mother’s house).
The younger son is a druggie, as I said.
On the other hand…man.
Both of them are parent-beaters. The problems with widows in India are manifold, and they are treating their mom - my aunt - like shit, too, not feeding her right, and hitting her, and depriving her. We can’t send any money because she has no way to get it. The sons will just take it anyway.
She is not senile, and has been told repeatedly to:

  • Go to the nearest elder shelter. We do have these, however they are few and far between, and it would be badnaami - uh, equivalant of bad face - for the family.
  • Go live wth someone else in our HUGE family. Ah, but then don’t you see, everyone would know!
  • Do something with the money. But I don’t really know how much power she has over the money.
  • Even, hell, come to America, but at her age she won’t consider it.

There’s only so far you can go to get people out of a hell they won’t leave on their own. What do you do further? This woman is Old World and she is petrified of the bad face it will bring on her family if it were known. Plus, Hinduism shoots itself in the foot sometimes - she believes she is paying for some sins in her past life.

On the other hand, there was a daughter, who is in her husband’s house, and her daughter (whom I call my niece) may be moving to the States, which would be kind of exciting.

Oh, yeah - rigs - I don’t know how much that ceremonial oil goes for. Probably not a hell of a lot, which is what makes it even sadder - he defiled his father’s last rites for a couple of buks. And in truth, I might have more sympathy for him if it wasn’t for everything else he did. Drugs are a big problem for young men in India…hard stuff too.
But the fact is, you could sell anything in India (except maybe the actual ashes). India is a place of the eternally stretched out hand. And I speak as a child of India, and someone who loves her.

Yeah well, it’s like Catholic Guilt, polytheistic version. Or Jewish Guilt, which may or may not be more refined (after all, they’ve been at it longer than us Catholics).

While we don’t get the “it must be a punishment for something I did in a past life” color, I’ve heard people say “I don’t know what did I do wrong, but this must be punishment for my sins” and mean it.

Is there such a thing as Atheist Guilt?

Yeah, it’s exactly that. Catholics seem to feel atonement and guilt is part of it and they’ll go to Heaven. Hindus feel that if they suffer in this life, they’ll have a good life in the next one. No thought of improving this one!

Gud Day, folks, and rahs for the weekend!

rigs, years ago when I worked in an outpatient mental health clinic, I found a quote that I gussied up and hung over my desk. I don’t know if it prevented anything but it made me feel better. It said: Rudeness is the little person’s imitation of power.

I’m sending out my good vibes to all who need them.

fcm, I know what you mean. “They” just aren’t good enough for OUR daughters.

Congrarts on the last day, boofae. Hope you’re celebrating it up right!

I don’t know how much of our latest Flawduh debacle is getting out to the rest of you but the Caylee Anthony story has my bullshit meter red-lining. I’m not sure which one of the characters in this family is worse.

Today’s my short day. Yay!

Tupug

ouch.

I just grabbed a dish towel that was tangled with a pair of scissors and threw them point down on my foot.

I have a nice little hole now.

ouch.
Dotty- good for husband for standing up to MIL!

Rigs- nurses are saints and have been amazing to my parents, especially to my dad. Thank you and all of your colleagues!!!

The idea is that you have a full and frank discussion with your line manager about what you liked or disliked about the job, the section, the institution as a whole and they are supposed to submit that information to HR for the record. The plus side to this is that you can actually specify who you want your interview with so it can be with someone other than your direct line management - I had opted for an interview with the sub-division director but she’s off sick so the division director did it instead.

Although I did a lot of grumbling and whinging about specific incidents, I’ve also said that the section is a nice place to work because the folks are friendly and helpful, there’s a good atmosphere here and if it weren’t for the fact I’ve been doing the same job for seven years, I might not have been so keen to leave. It’s time for a change of scenery and the decline in management standards over the last 12 months have contributed to the decision.

I didn’t want to be badmouthing TK and Assistant Twunt too much because essentially they’re not bad people, they just need to work on a few things.

Exit interviews are hard, though. I live in a medium community, and I really can’t afford to burn any bridges, so how could you be honest?

Happy Friday everyone!

rigs, I’m sorry you had such a shitty day and such a shitty person to deal with yesterday. I don’t understand people like that.

Mork, I hope your leg continues to improve.

mika, wow…just wow, that is some family you’ve got there. I’ve read various articles about the elder and spousal abuse over there. It’s very sad that your aunt is more worried about saving face than taking care of herself.

Boofae, yay on your last day. I hope your new job brings much more happiness, or at least, satisfaction.

My daughter had to work until closing last night, so I had to pick her up at 11:00 last night. I have to do it again tonight and tomorrow night. The Safeway she works at is only 6/10s of a mile from the house, but we still don’t want her walking alone at that time of night.

I’m thinking I’ll get my oil changed on the way home tonight. Today is my short day, so I’ll get off an hour earlier than normal.

I guess I should actually do some more work now. I came in and queued several reports and did a couple of other things, but the donwannas are making it hard to concentrate. Thank goodness I only have one more week of work and then I’m on vacation. I know it’s time for vacation when I have the donwannas more often than not.

I was honest in that I told her what kind of management lunacy had been happening and what I thought would have made it better. What else can I say? Truth often hurt, yannow?

Welp, we have pretty much everything packed, just waiting for SpaceDawg’s pill to take effect so we can take her over to the vet to be boarded for the weekend. Poor puppy is hurting so much and I feel so bad for her. :frowning:

Grandboy is over and is still in the dark as to exactly what is entailed with the weekend–we’ve told him we’re going camping but no specifics at all, we’re hoping he stays clueless right up until we hit site, heh heh…

Sorry guys, but the whole No Guilt Unless You Actually Did Something Bad thing is one of the major perks of atheism! Mika, that sounds really horrible and I’m so sorry for your aunt–as interesting and rich a culture as India has, it also has much to answer for in its treatment of women in general and older women in particular. Is there much sign of things changing, or is it so ingrained in the culture that nothing much can be done about it?

Glad your calf is better, Mork, and you knock that off, Soapy– you wanna be gimping around like Mork is? Huh?

Yay BooFae, last days rock don’t they? Exit interviews are a total waste of time, though, because by the time you’re there you’re wondering where was all this concern about working conditions during the time you were actually working there? Classic lock barn after horse stolen maneuver.

Yay for DottyHusband kicking MIL-From-Hell in the ass, right on!

Miscellaneous hugs, yays, boos and trout as needed since I’ll be incommunicado until Sunday–don’t make too much of a mess, now, or at least clean up after yourselves! I shall try to get some crappy ass cell phone pics this weekend–man, I really need to break down and get a cheapo digicam that takes at least halfway decent pics. Hmmm, maybe when I stop by the Freddie’s for ice…

Happy Firday, all, seeya later!

Howdy, all. {{{Mumpers}}} – sounds like a whole lotta folks here need extra hugs!

While I’m thinking about it, snowbunny, call me this evening after you’re off work and let me know your schedule for the upcoming week, okay?

After kind of vegging around much of yesterday, I finally got my behind in gear last night and got a nice small pile of work done. Many more large piles where that came from, alas. So while I’d love to stay around and yak and respond individually to everything that’s been coming up here, I probably should be a good girl and behave myself and work. At least today is Papa Tigs’ RDO, so he’s got dog duty, which makes it easier for me to just concentrate. Poor baby, he had a whole two-day week this week – he took Tuesday off since we got home so late Monday, so Wednesday was his Monday and yesterday was his Firday! We should all have weeks like that, eh?

Later – and extra {{{Mumper}}} hugs just 'cause!
