"Police say 6 dead, at least 9 injured in Sacramento shooting"

Not many details yet. Anyone in the Sacramento area? (You’re probably just getting up – 8:15 AM (CDT) on a Sunday morning…)

I’m well south of the area this happened in, and local news sites don’t have any more detail yet than your story did.

Still no details on SF local news, except the number of injured is now given as 10.

One of the bars I go to closes at midnight. the owner once told me nothing good happens after midnight.

Looking at the boarded up buildings, graffiti, people sleeping on the sidewalk, time of occurrence… I’m guessing a bar brawl that went on tour.

Seems plausible, given that part of town. A lot of the boarded-up buildings got that way as a result of the “protest” lootings and arson in 2020.

I live near Sacramento and I sent out a message earlier this morning letting my family know I was OK. I was at home asleep when it happened, so not even remotely in any danger, but I was worried a family member would hear the news and worry about me. I hope they catch the shooter or shooters soon.

That CNN isn’t reporting on it suggests to me that in addition to the victims (mostly?) not being middle-class Caucasians, it may have been gang-related and/or the people involved all knew each other.

Nice assumption. Or gamble, or whatever.
So this is from CNN, who is clearly reporting on the story. But whatever.

I meant CNN, the cable channel, and did hear it mentioned there in the meantime. NBC News also led with the story this evening, although details were sketchy as these stories go.

The Sacramento Bee probably has some of the better coverage – although I think newspaper crime coverage has strongly deteriorated over the past few decades–they seem to now overwhelmingly rely on police PR people.

Note the first picture is a young black male being loaded into an ambulance.
They have a timeline:

I saw the shootings covered on CNN this afternoon. CNN’s newscasts throughout the day seem to me to be formatted with the first half hour devoted to the big story (which these days is always Ukraine, except for a brief Will Smith detour last week) The second half hour is a catch-all for other stories. I saw the shootings covered on CNN this afternoon.

Yesterday afternoon (the afternoon before it happened) I went to matinee performance of Wicked a couple of blocks from where this happened. Before the show I had lunch probably a block from where it happened. I walked past the spot where it happened on the way to the restaurant.

That’s just one block. The west end of K Street by the Golden 1 Center is pretty nice. Then there’s like one block that’s kind of sketchy with a lot of vacant storefronts. Then the next few blocks, around the Crest Theater and Convention Center and Safe Credit Union Performing Arts Center are pretty nice again. Those couple of blocks are where all the restaurants and bars are.

They said on the news they had a suspect in custody. Haven’t said if the victims were specifically targeted or if it was linked to an earlier fight.

We had a much worse event in my city and it was a crazy-goes-hunting event that started with the shooter’s sister and then whoever was nearby.

Altho there was wall-to-wall coverage of this on the local Sacramento news yesterday, very little information has been released. The city is treating this as a major trauma event.

Words to live by.

The local public radio station is reporting that the person they arrested was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and carrying a firearm as a restricted person, not homicide, and that the police believe there are additional suspects still at large. That makes me think participated in the fight that preceded the shooting, but that the police don’t believe he was one of the shooters. Hopefully he has information on who they are, though, and he is willing to talk.

The fatalities have been identified. The 57-year-old woman was homeless, and apparently sleeping on the sidewalk and was hit by a stray bullet.

Two of the suspects are brothers, and the one who was seriously injured was paroled last year despite officials saying he shouldn’t have been.

It was apparently gang warfare:

Sacramento police say that two groups of men began firing at each other in Sunday’s shooting downtown and that at least five shooters were involved in what authorities are now saying was a gang dispute that left six people dead and 12 wounded.

“Evidence in the case indicates that at least five shooters fired guns during the shooting, and that an exchange of gunfire took place between at least two groups of men,” police said in an announcement Wednesday.

I pretty much figured it was gangs. Just wish the unsocialized ferals who join gangs could pick a different method of marking territory than lead or blood.
