Inspired by a CNN article that says the housing market is closed off to most younger Americans, placing blame on older people staying in homes that have more room than they need. “many Boomers across the country are refusing to sell their homes”.

If you’re a “Boomer”/“empty nester” intent on staying in a house with more room than you need, how much guilt do you feel?

  • A little guilt
  • Moderate guilt
  • Enormous guilt
  • Intend to sell as soon as possible to ease the housing shortage for millennials
  • Plan to downsize for my convenience
  • Love having more room than we “need”
  • Will rent out space to the young folk
  • Get off my lawn
  • Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

Celery in your tuna/chicken/shrimp/whatever salad:

  • Of course. It’s not right without it.
  • No way! Keep that celery away from me!
  • Meh. It’s okay with it, it’s okay without it.
  • Something else.

Do you know which cardinal direction your house faces?

Knowing only your current hemisphere on Earth, could you find North without any equipment?
  • Yes. No problem!
  • I think so. Fairly confident.
  • Maybe. Low confidence.
  • No, or very unlikely. There’s an infinitesimal chance it could begin raining compasses at any time.

You’ve been invited to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at a Major League Baseball game!

How do you reply?

  • Yes! Yes! I’m totally stoked! This is a dream of mine!
  • Sure, sounds like fun; I’ll do it.
  • Meh, whatever.
  • You might be able to talk me into it, but I have little to no interest in this.
  • No way in hell.

How nervous would you be to do it?

  • Not nervous at all. I’m going to savor every moment and soak up the attention.
  • I’ll certainly be a bit nervous, but the adrenaline will help me through it.
  • Very nervous. I hope I’m not visibly shaking when they hand me the ball.
  • So terrified that I probably wouldn’t even be able to do it.

If given the choice, where do you want to throw the pitch from?

  • I’m standing right at the rubber and throwing a full 60.5 foot pitch. Go big or go home!
  • I’ll stand in front of the mound and throw it about 40-50 feet.
  • Halfway or more to home plate, for a toss of less than 30 feet.
  • Can I just hand the ball to the catcher?
0 voters

How much will you practice beforehand?

  • As much as I possibly can. I’m going to nail this pitch like a pro!
  • An hour or so should be enough to get a good feel for it.
  • Maybe a couple throws, just so I don’t make a complete fool of myself.
  • No practice at all. Whatever happens happens!

You are dumped into the wilderness with 4 USGS Section maps, a decent orienteering compass, a sextant, an accurate watch and 2 weeks supplies. The nearest town, village, crossroads with a 7-11, whatever is a week away…in some direction.

  • I would make it to people in a week.
  • I would make it to people in 2 weeks.
  • I would stagger into town weak and skinny, but I’d make it.

In this hypothetical situation, imagine you are a heterosexual with a severe, highly heritable condition and also that you wish to be a biological parent. There would be a greater than 60% chance that the child would inherit your severe condition and that it would affect them in terrible ways for the rest of their life. Would you proceed with having the child?

  • Yes, I would take the risk anyway.
  • No, I would not.
  • My imagination is too paltry to imagine something like this.

Is it morally right to impart your belief system, be it religious, spiritual, or otherwise (including a lack of beliefs), to a child and involve them in a community of like-minded individuals (if applicable) before they have the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills on their own?

  • It is right because I will be saving them from incorrect belief systems.
  • It is right because I would be saving their soul.
  • It is wrong and I would wait until they could think critically for themselves to present my case in favor of my belief system.
  • It is wrong and I would let them figure things out for themselves without intervening in any way.
  • It is wrong. I consider it to be child abuse.
  • My belief system does not include the concept of morality.
  • This is a very complicated question to which I have never given any serious thought and therefore I currently have no conclusion that I can endorse.
