Polycarp will be offline indefinitely :-(

Great to see you back up on your feet, Polycarp!

I’ll “unstick” this thread now - I suspect it to be on the first page of MPSIMS for a while longer anyway, but it looks like the main goal of it has been accomplished. You’re a very special breed of people, Dopers - my hat’s off to ya’s.

Nothing gives me more hope than this simple fact. I have a great deal of trouble believing in anything religious…but if it’s true I hope the supreme being finds it all funny.

And anyone else notice he worked a LOTR reference in? Maybe we should move this to CS.

And Poly…I’m in publishing. There’s always freelance writers needed up here in DC. Drop me a line with your areas of knowledge and I’ll send out some feelers. Glad to do it.

The Straight Dope Message Board: With willing hearts and skillful hands, the difficult we do at once. The impossible takes a bit longer.

(apologies to the SeaBees)

hahaha That’s probably not the last “look” you’re going to get!

And as others have said: Great to have you back Polycarp!

P.S. My email is not currently working, and apparently this board has PMs disabled, so whenever you have a spare minute or two please check your PMs at the Parlor. I’m heading back there right now.

So glad to see you back, Poly.

{{{Polycarp}}}

Welcome back!

Good to see you back, Polycarp.

Good luck with your second interview.

Welcome Back, Poly.

Scotti - will you please email me about the other situation? I’m at work and can’t email right now…

Goldurnit, this is what I get for never going to MPSIMS. I miss all the important stuff!

I would have just SPIT if we had lost ** Poly! ** So maybe it’s better I didn’t see this til now, my keyboard woulda gotten all nasty…

AND today’s update…

PayPal total $2572.00!!!

You people ROCK!

Please post the arrival of checks by snail-mail, for the conieinence of the sender.

I was planning on emailing each of you when your check arrives, provided I can match the email you sent me with your name. I have been trying to keep track of what is expected, so hopefully that won’t be a problem.

Polycarp,

I am sure I speak for many people when I say I don’t expect a formal thanks–it’s enough to see you posting again. I shudder to think of you trying to get through a list of Dopers who donated, trying to construct some sort of note/message/email for each one. You’ve got better things to do with your time, such as post to the StraightDope! I for one consider myself thanked–zipping off a few bucks in a season where giving is the norm is not really a big deal. I already feel rewarded enough by the fellow-feeling here and the knowledge that I was part of a bigger effort to do right by someone who deserves a little help.

First mail total…$560.00!!!

Updated PayPal as of this morning…$2619.00!!!

I heard back from the person who built the computer, and there is already a video card installed. But if you wouldn’t mind, you could send it to aenea, who is already collecting things like that to sell on ebay and donate to the fund.

That address again is:

Janeen W.
Carolina Digital
3200 Spring Forest Rd
Raleigh, NC. 27502
The other note is concerning the offer of a $25.00 donation per every $500.00 we collect by 12/31. I failed to clarify with this person how the mail donations, some of which were already in the mail at the time of the offer, fit into this. So I will have to get back to you on whether or not we have reached the first $500.00 goal.

Also, I am planning on trying to get everyone notified (AND thanked) by email whose check I have received in the mail ASAP…by tommorow, hopefully. But please don’t hesitate to email me if you haven’t heard from me and you think your check should have gotten here by now. There were a couple who didn’t give me their username OR email address, so it might take a bit of time to track you down.

Thank you again for your kind and generous hearts!

Yeah…major bummer…

…there but for the grace of God (or is it the vagaries of fortune?) go I…

Hmmph. Well, of course I noticed that this thread ran to many pages. I, uh, just got distracted and thought I was on the last page.

Glad you ain’t gone after all, Poly.

Scotti, it looks like the best way for me to transfer funds is through a Western Union International Money Order. These have to be deposited in a bank account and the funds take about a week to be cleared - will this present a problem? (how on earth do people in the US function without a bank account)

If you’d like to email me with a snail mail address, I’ll send you a money order on Thursday.

No problem, reprise. I’ll email you with my address immediately. And thank you!

Today’s PayPal total is $2669.00!
Mail total remains at $560.00, as nothing came yesterday and of course today is Sunday.

I have discussed the matter with our “challenge benefactor”, and we decided that mail donations postmarked 12/25/2002 and later will be included in the challenge total, as well as the PayPal donations that came in that day and later.

We have acheived our first $500.00 challenge total, so $25.00 will be added to the total after 12/31/2002.

Thanks again, CB…you are a doll!

I see Poly’s got a PC…man that’s great. I got one together and it works pretty good, since Poly’s taken care of there I’m gonna give this one to somebody here I know that can use it.

Got a vehicle too, huh! that’s too cool, sounds like he’s enjoying it as well…give’m hell Poly. It’s a firebird, < jealous smiley> he-he just kidding…have a wonderful new year and I guess I’ll just send a few bucks to help if that’s okay.

I got an idea about maybe starting a donations fund for Dopers.
(maybe y’all have been here before, I dunno)
If we could maybe get it going and have someone we all trust that could use a little extra $. That person could set it up, take care of proceeds and distribution of funds, etc.

In return for their efforts in handling this, perhaps they could earn a paycheck for doing so? Maybe a percent of the proceeds that are raised and dispersed. This is just off the top of my noggin, so if it sounds unrealistic then forget it. Anyway, it’s just a thought.

Peace
