Count me in to help; I’ll be able to PayPal a contribution in a day or two. I hope that won’t be too late.
Poly is an asset to the boards. I hope his financial situation turns around very soon.

Thanks, Coldfire, but it was RT Firefly who told us about this.
I won’t be giving out Polycarp’s address and phone number to people without checking with him first, which is why even Scotticher doesn’t have it yet (I’ll ask him tomorrow). My printer broke about six months ago, but there’s a rumor to the effect that a new one will be appearing under the Christmas tree, so I’ll send him a printout of this entire thread as soon as I can.
You folks have touched my heart this Christmas as well. While I do know of one other group which may rival you (sorry about that), I’m not sure even they could get this big a response this quickly. The first verse of a hymn Polycarp and I both like ends, “And strangers now are friends.” I’m honored to call you people my friends.

Paypal is fast and painless. Lets get this going.
I was thinking of something like this once, while browsing the UNICEF website (which I can’t look at without crying). An emergency fund for Dopers sounds nice, but could potentially get ugly - but it would be wonderful if we could collect for reputable charities. I think some people would be willing.
I think we need a new thread, because I don’t want to hijack this one. I don’t want to suggest that we shouldn’t help Polycarp, because we should, and it’s a beautiful thing that we are.
Send me RTFirefly’s snail mail address and I’ll send him whatever humble amount I can to parlay over by Poly Christmas Eve.
Best wishes, Saint Polycarp. And maye the ole’ Savings and Loan turn around.
Now, three cheers for Polycarp, the richest guy in Dopetown!
Okay, let’s hold off on sending any computer parts to aenea for a time…I have had someone email me to say that they have a very good computer for Polycarp…all they DON’T have is a monitor. So if this works out, we DO still need a monitor. Anyone have a spare monitor?
I will keep you updated.
And I think you all are THE BEST!
Also, THANK YOU COLDY!!!
My thoughts and prayers are with Poly and his family right now, too. I can’t do much, but I’ll send whatever money I afford after I pay my bills and balance the checkbook tomorrow.
“Hee haw and Merry Christmas,”
Happy
Due to my personal desire for anonymity, would somebody please email me Polycarp’s real name (I’ll send a small check to arena) to: sparticus1066@aol.com
Just got confirmation. Poly WILL have a computer. All he will need is a monitor. These people wish to be anonymous, but I am personally going to be grateful to them for the rest of my natural life. Well, beyond that, actually. You guys ROCK!!!
Please let me interject a personal note here. I have NOT been having a very good time with this Christmas season. I have been blue, I have been mourning the loss of a friend, I have been stoically moving through the things I HAD to do to make my fathers Christmas wonderful, and fulfilling obligations. That’s all. Tonight, I have rediscovered the love of Christ…and the reason for the season.
Thank you all.
Scotticher, hang in there, day will come again. As for me, I don’t know what the hell I was thinking, but I’ve hated aol for years, my email is sparticus1066@yahoo.com. Geez Louise, what a maroon!
Hey, I live in Polycarp’s neck of the woods, and I have a spare monitor – but unfortunately, I’m out of town and won’t be back 'til January 7th. E-mail me if you’re interested.
I’m in. Polycarp, you may not know me from Adam but I have a whole lotta respect for you.
My thoughts are with your and yours now. Thank you ever so much for being who you are!
People may now stop sending me Polycarp’s name. Per the instructions of Scottichier, I will be sending $tuff for forwarding directly to her, my previous emails and posts notwithstanding, henceforth, heretofore and forthwith.
Our family has been having money problems, but we have been able to hold our own so far. We just don’t have anything extra to send in time for Christmas. But I can send polycarp prayers and good wishes.
Best of luck to you; better days are coming.
Merry Christmas!
–Kris, one of your admirers
Tabby, no one would be more appreciative of prayers and good wishes than our Polycarp. They help, especially the prayers.
Thank you!
Fretful Porpentine…darling, we ARE interested!!! When are you coming home?
I am Sparticus dear, I didn’t knock you upside the head, what are you trying to do, make me look like a NOODGE? Well, I probably AM a noodge, or the Scottish equivilant…IS there one? All I know is, my gram and mom were full bloodeded Scottish, and THEY were noodges. So … IT IS NOT MY FAULT…IT IS GENETIC!!!
In any case, I appreciate your giving and loving heart. And if you would rather send a contribution to someone without an aol address, so long as it gets to Poly, I don’t mind. ::
Assuming I’m reading this right, a bunch of other folks got together and have lined up a good desktop computer for Polycarp. That sounds better than an old-ish laptop.
Still got a checkbook, though. Scotticher, I’ll be emailing you for your snail address shortly.
Thank you all very much for being willing to help out my brother Polycarp. I see he has touched many lives here.
My thanks also to Homebrew for posting a link to this thread over at the Pizza Parlor. I was not aware of Poly’s situation.
God bless each one of you.
Good night.
Scotticher,
I believe we still have an extra 13" monitor around here somewhere, but I am a computer idiot. As I recall, my son made some comment about needing a software driver for it. Does that make any sense?
Or would it be better if I just go buy him a new monitor? Would any non-Apple monitor work with the machine that is being sent to you?
Thanks.
P.S. Sorry to hear about your loss. I’m sure this thread has been an inspiration to many of us.
