Polycarp will be offline indefinitely :-(

I hope Polycarp and his family have a great Christmas, and a better year next year.

I just spoke to Poly as well.

He can get his car back for $1,000. It seems like that amount can be raised right here. Of course, he’ll have to begin making payments again, but he has a job interview just after New Years. He has a good feeling about his chances to get the job.

And like CJ said, he is overwhelmed with the response here. He and I prayed together, and he says that what is happening here and at the Parlor has greatly lifted his and his wife’s spirits.

We have 30 days to get the $1,000 to him. Can we do that?

Well, Lib, if we can get water to be wet, and not only 3 but 5 -gry words, I think it might just be possible;) This group, when it comes to the things and people that/who matter to us, is the opposite of sting(r;))y.

Homebrew, does paypal still give you $5 for signing up? I remember they did that back in the stone ages when I got an account.

I have to wait a business day or two for the money to make it from my checking account to my paypal account, I’m assuming there will still be time to do this?

Yes, Haydee. A few days won’t matter. Thank you for helping!

Pun:

Our prayers are with Polycarp, his family and the others who’ve mentioned they are having a difficult time this Christmas season. Our paypal transfer should be on the way today, if I can figure it out. Otherwise, “check will be in the mail.”

Polycarp has so often provided articulate, thoughtful and compassionate posts, it is a pleasure to have a concrete way to say “thank you.” We are told “you reap what you sow.” Polycarp has sown well.

It’s a Christmas tradition at our house to look for an anonymous way to help someone who’s down on their luck-- A thank you for the year we received similar help. The family was just asking if any of us knew someone in need, when I stopped by to read the latest LOTR TT chatter. I love “coincidence”.

Well, I think a good goal would be the thousand plus at least another payment on the thing. That would take him into Feb of the next year. This is much better than picking up some beater and him losing all the money he already has into his car.

Scottchier, can we get a running total as we go?
And yes, iampunha, they do still give 5 bucks for signing up, so those of you who cant spare anything, at least sign up and send the 5 bucks. To bad they dont do the referal 5 bucks anymore, or we could double that.

Does the family need anything, other than money?

They ask for prayer.

Will happy thoughts suffice in lieu of prayer, Lib?

Of course, my friend. In the end, it’s the same.

That the have

(aside: Lib, would you please drop me a line with your email addy?)

And we see the reason that this is the best message board on the Internet.

Because of the members.

May the Lord bless you all, now and forever.

Polycarp back on the SDMB. What better Christmas present could I want?

Done.

I wish I could spare more, but Christmas and tax season hit me hard- so I can only spare a fifty spot. If I believed in God I would pray for him, rest assured. I hope that my Christmas gift helps him, and that things will get better.

I will send the money right now, but I would also be interested in a running total.

Thats more than I could spare this time Epimetheus. I may have more next pay check, but things are tight all over. Anything helps.

We are right around $725.00 as of this moment.

God Bless you all for your loving and giving hearts.

Thank you all for your offers of a monitor…could everyone who offered their help with this please check to see if their offered monitors work well, and post details…or email me with details? Since we have so many offered, I think the best thing to do is to choose the one with the largest screen and longest potential lifetime. Not that I have any idea how to judge THAT, but I expect someone here will be able to help me decide which one is the best bet.

Thanks again…and BTW, I have emailed the kind donors of the computer Polycarp’s address, so he should be getting the computer in a week or sooner. Once again, you will have a special place in MY heart forever.

How incredibly cold-hearted (or not, I dunno) would it be to suggest that an easy-ish way to make up part of the money difference would be to sell one of the other monitors? Unless the money we’re talking about from a not-brand-new monitor wouldn’t make all that much of a dent in the PolyFund[sup]TM[/sup]?

I’ve been talking about this with another Doper, 'puhna.

I already do side-work as an eBay auction assistant and am going to sell some unused puter equipment and send the proceeds on over to Scotticher.

Sound like something that would work?

I think that is an very good idea, hon, but it WOULD take some work on the part of the people who actually HAVE the excess monitors. And this time of year, time is probably not something most people have. BUt if any of these generous souls choose to DO that, of COURSE the money would “make a dent” in his fund. I am of the opinion that ANY amount of money is more money than a person had before…be it $1.00 or $1,000.00. And this is the premise I work on whenever I am collecting donations for ANYONE.

I don’t personally have any idea how one would go about it, either…whenever I have anything that still works but I don’t need anymore, I just donate it to someone who needs it.

So, whatever anyone wants to do is just FINE with me. And MUCH appreciated.
