Pomegranate diseases anyone?

I bought what looked like a perfect pomegranate, but found many black spikey … things … inside. Is this what early black rot looks like?

Are the good looking arils safe?

I ended up tossing them. What looked like good ones were just a bit … odd … in the strainer. Never seen this in poms before, but I buy only a couple a year.

The picture is not too clear - my guess would be sprouts, the seeds are ready to grow into little pomegranate trees.

But I am not a botanist.

I agree; they were probably beginning to sprout.

Huh, so despite its size, this could have been one still developing. Interesting.

Could be, they were hard like seeds. Couldn’t find a pic online to confirm.

Oh you mean the reverse, new seeds that could be planted. Damn, I should have saved some for experiments.

The one that looks like a sunflower seed is black on the reverse.
