Pool Ionizer

Hi
I was reading about these pool ionizers. They say they use alot les chem. arecheaper to run, easier to maintain, no burningeyes, etc
Is this just a lot of hype or do these things realy work?
Thanks

It is difficult to find the real chemistry behind them, but apparently it is a simple electrolytic cell that slowly dissolves the copper/silver anode into the water. Copper and silver cations apparently act as the bactericide. Inevitably these ions will come in contact with chloride (not chlorine) and produce their respective salts. Silver chloride is completely insoluble, and Copper(I) Chloride is not very soluble. This probably keeps the metal content relatively low. That works as long as the copper doesnt get oxidized to Copper(II).

In theory, I don’t see any reason this couldn’t work. My parents have had an ozone generator in their hot tub for years and it definitely was the way to go.
