Popular bands everyone loves but you hate.

Are you confusing Nick Cave with someone else? I can’t see how Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds would ever be considered “a popular band that everyone loves.”
(I like Nick Cave.)

I’m a big Pumpkins fan, but I understand the urge to punch Billy Corgan in the nose, especially c. 1999. That’s sounds like exactly right about the time I stopped really giving a shit about them/Billy Corgan. And Oasis, particularly Liam Gallagher, is certainly one of those easy-to-hate characters. I’m pretty sure I remember him topping the “most hated singer” list some time around 2000/2001.

ETA: It was this Madame Toussads poll, where he was ranked as “more hated” than Saddam Hussein, but behind Hitler and Milosevic.

Why are there clothes hanging outside on a rainy day?

I remember Squier being fairly popular around 1980, but then he delivered what some would consider the worst music video of all time (Rock me Tonight), and that sent his career into a tailspin.

That a video could destroy the guy’s career is a testament to how powerful MTV was in those days.

I have some of my old Metal edge magazines, in the power poll question they would ask which bands do we dislike I would always write
Pearl Jam, sound garden, Nirvina, smashing pumpkins.
to this day these are the bands that are popular that I don’t like.
just never got into 90’s music.

Then you definitely picked the right username!

(I have to admit, that the 80s might just be my favorite decade for music, although if I could edge into 1979 or 1978 or so, that would help solidify it.)

Journey is among the most vile garbage out there – though, TBCF, their first couple of albums were kind of interesting. They are like I asked you for a nicely charred steak and you gave me raw Spam – utter schlock, bleah.

By comparison, there was this hugely lamentable monstrosity in the early 80s that I did not notice getting mention in this thread so far: Asia. Holy crap but it does not get worse than that gunk.

I mean, many of the bands mentioned here I see as having a fair repertoire of OK music, or a period where they were interesting. The Stones, for instance, had a pretty good run up until they turned to total crap around the mid 70s.

But with a band like Boston or Asia, their entire catalog is just over-produced, rose-scented sewage. Music should have real emotional content, it should evoke feelings the you can identify the performers as having. This kind of beige pablum just lies on the table and quivers imperceptibly when a heavy truck goes by.

The rain stopped. It happens. Except in the Monsoon season.

I haven’t read this whole thread but I just had to jump in and tell you about the double whammy I received last week. I had no control over it because I was in the dentist’s chair having 6 teeth extracted when the radio (WXRT I hate you) broadcasts a Neil Young song! Doctor please! Put some novocaine in my ears! My gums are still sore but my ears have yet to recover. I don’t care what anybody says about him, Neil Young sucks!

I agree with the Bob Seger disgust. Seems like the bard of deadbeat dads, washed-up high school star athletes, and every guy who has some sort of ridiculously grandiose view of their youth/early 20s.

He may not get air play but he is a hipster darling. The popularity confused me so much I tried to like him but every song is a B-side throwaway. It’s like he is trying to find a song that just isn’t in him.

I can’t understand not liking Heart. Anyone who hears Ann’s voice and doesn’t fall in love with her is an alien.

(hijack) You and I may have the same dentist…mine plays WXRT too! (It’s not the typical station you’d hear at the dentist.)

This thread is actually a bit inane in that everybody has their own sense of taste. I like that Ann Wilson sings with sack, others either find that unpleasant or just dislike her voice. I like Annie Lennox, my best friend says her voice sounds broken. I like the passion of Beth Hart, others might not care for her raw sound. I think Metallica is tedious but Iron Maiden sounds like art, in its way.

It is just a rag fest here.

But see, she (and the others I listed above) would have to sing a song I cared about. If you just show off your pipes on a song that I think is terrible, what have I gained? Everyone that’s in a band I hate can certainly play their instrument as well as the vast majority of my musical heroes, they just choose to play it in a way that I think is a waste of time to listen to.

On the other hand, we have some evidence that I could be an alien. So, things are looking up.

Are those more Kate Bush lyrics?

I think it is from an obscure stanza in a re-working of a Robert Klein classic
*I can’t stop the rain
I can’t stop the rain
I can’t stop the rain
I can’t stop the rain

The rain stopped

There it goes again*

Which Heart?

There are those who love the “classic” line-up with Roger Fisher,Steve Fossen, and Mike Derosier and detest the pablum-like drivel that the Wilson sisters released after their departure which should not have been released under the Heart moniker.

I get what Scabpicker’s saying about good singers singing lame songs. I have heard Celine Dion sing. I saw the video of her on the “Titanic”, wind blowing through her hair, doing her best to look like Fabio. However, for the life of me, I can not remember how that song goes. I remember hearing a song on the radio, thinking “is that Amy Grant?” only to have the DJ say it was Celine Dion. I can’t remember that tune either, and I know I heard it many times. Celine has a fine voice- but to me, her songs are utterly unmemorable, since I can never remember how any of them go. It’s pretty much the same with Barbra Streisand.

Mumford & Sons is the first band that came to mind. I like that style of music, but I find nothing appealing or innovative about their music.

I’ve always thought of Dave Matthews Band as pointless frat-boy music ever since their heyday in the mid 90s.

Oh, how did I forget them? They drove me absolutely nuts last year or so when they had like 5 songs on the top 40 and were incessantly played.

It’s a pity, because they are quite good musicians, and Carter Beauford is one of my favorite drummers. I saw them at a musical festival once, and was very impressed by the tightness of the band and their groove. Yes, I do actually think they have a bit of swing and soul to their music, but it’s just so goddamned boring.
