I hope I don’t get in trouble over this post, but it is a true quote. About 30 years ago I remember I had stopped by my parents house for something and my younger brother was watching MTV and that video was on. He turned to me and says “I didn’t know Squier was a fag!”.
I’m not sure there is such a thing as a band everybody loves anymore. There was never literally such a thing, but I can imagine that sometimes it seemed figuratively true- these days no matter how popular a band is, it’s easy to find a story or listicle with 10 reasons they’re the worst band ever.
Where did I say music HAS to be innovative in order to be enjoyable? With Mumford & Sons, I get the impression some fans think they are the first band to ever bring a banjo onstage. I love Americana and roots music and I think a lot of other bands do it far better.
Ca. 1990, I dated a guy who owned a used record store, and there were four artists whose albums he couldn’t give away. They were Twisted Sister, Asia, Huey Lewis and the News, and…Bob Seger. That last one was very surprising to me.
I was a willow last night in a dream and I bent down over a clear running stream I sang you this song that I heard up above while you kept me alive wtih your sweet flowing love Heart.
Yep. 80’s Heart was ass. Never understood the airplay it got.
Oh and “Miss America” by Styx was damn good but got no airplay.
I was watching an episode of Pawn Stars where Big Hoss says the Beatles are overrated, essentially they were the first boy band. That kind of shook me for a second, because it seemed perfectly true, but I took a history of rock and roll class that dissected their contributions to music as a whole. The first boy band imho would be the Monkees.
I don’t understand why Oasis had such a huge following. I thought they only had one good song.
There’s a ton of female singers I don’t like either. I think my ears translate high voices into pain. I like the ones with low voices like Shakira or Skylar Grey.
I’m not entirely sure why Gangnam Style is considered a “good song” either. To me, it’s a Korean Weird Al Yankovic or Lonley Island comedy video with lame lyrics.
All 90’s rappers that plagiarized Ladidadi. In particular, Hypnotize by the fat dude and Lodidodi by Snoop leopard/lion/hyena/whatever he calls himself now.
She definitely does not have a classic singing voice, but I think it works for her music, especially the first album. When she got a bit more poppy and produced, I think there was more of a mismatch.
Ever seen the guys in Oasis interviewed? They were all so drugged up and brain-damaged, I could never figure out how they could write songs or perform.
The Monkees were the first manufactured pop act to make it big in the way they did.
