Homeless woman shoots attacker: Petersburg man survives train collision
DGU with attacker dead. This is a good example of how firearms empower the most vulnerable to defend themselves against brutality.
I have a confession to make, but first I must say I’m a bit surprised that nobody who is a regular poster to this thread or any firearm-related thread caught the tone of the post I am quoting here.
The SDMB is something I hold precious because for all of the flaws we’re fond of pointing out in ATMB, our free speech rights stand tall and are respected almost all of the time.
I’m as virulently anti-firearm a citizen as you can find in this country. For deeply personal as well as philosophical reasons - that don’t belong in this thread.( glad to discuss elsewhere ).
I should have posted into the BBQ Pit thread on Gun News. That is the appropriate place for the level of angry sarcasm I intoned into my post.
My apologies to the OP’er and contributors to this thread. I either defend Free Speech across all spectra or I don’t get to talk about Free Speech at all.
Sorry for the threadshitting. My anger got the better of me.

I, for one (and I doubt that I’m the only one) caught the sarcasm and anger in your post, but chose to ignore it. This thread is not the place for either your post or opinionated responses.
Kudos to you for coming back to retract the post (if not the opinion behind it).
I caught it. It didn’t warrant comment at the time.
In other news, Suspected burglar confronted by homeowner on dialysis with a gun
DGU with no injuries. The mere display of the firearm caused the 24 year old to run. He was later arrested after he was seen running from the scene.
I’ve been reading this thread every day (my thanks to the daily posters!), though I don’t think I’ve contributed until now. I read your comment, understood the intent and, like the others above, chose to ignore it. For you to come back in of your own accord and apologize takes a lot of character. This country was built on, and as a result of, people being able to hold and freely express conflicting opinions. Done openly and without malice, it can be a beautiful thing. I don’t subscribe to your opinions on guns but, because you have obviously put a lot of thought into it, I can respect them.
Now, about your desire to defend free speech, I have a nice little ‘piece’ here that may help you with that. ![]()
In other news, Tampa Man Shoots, Kills Intruder
DGU with one death. Knocking first to see if anyone is home is a common strategy so I’m told. It’s a toss up whether to answer or not since opening a door is still an action not without risk. I generally prepare when I hear a knock but do not answer. Cameras can tell me who it is.
In other news, Licensed handgun carrier thwarts robbery
DGU with no injuries. Another Craigslist incident. I am a bit surprised people will still utilize Craigslist but I guess these have to be outliers.
Our little town publicizes that there is a space in the police parking lot with 24 hour security cameras for people to come to when making a sale for any reason.
In other news, Woman tracks down, holds home invasion suspects at gun point
DGU with no injuries. I don’t think I’d recommend pursuing fleeing burglars but it did end well.
In other news, Dundee gas clerk scares off would-be robber
DGU with no injuries. Apparently this person then proceeded to two other stores and was able to rob them. Pretty clear example of preventing a robbery by being armed.
Not to hijack the thread, but is this legal? You can chase down criminals and hold them at gun point?
Yes! You can even shoot them in the back as they run away:
What would Jesus do?
It depends on the details of the fact pattern. In some cases, yes.

In other news, Suspected home intruder shot multiple times in Parkville
DGU with no deaths. This does not sound like the actions of a sane person.
And in still more news for the weekend, Clarksburg PD: Victim of shooting allegedly broke into home beforehand
DGU with no deaths. 2v2 and the residents prevailed after shooting one of the intruders.
Woman shoots former abusive boyfriend: http://www.kansascity.com/news/nation-world/national/article85770537.html
DGU with boyfriend shot and behind bars. Another good example of how a firearm empowers women in the face of real threats to their lives. The boyfriend had threatened to kill the woman, had violated a restraining order against him three times, and broke into her house while an alarm system was being installed. I’m glad we’re not hearing about the alternate ending.
Shouldn’t that be “Woman shoots abusive former boyfriend”?
In other news, Floresville man shoots, kills intruder, police say
DGU with one death. Apparently the building was mixed use retail living space - otherwise it’s hard to see how the owner would be at the store at 6am.
I’m not entirely sure this was self defense. It might have been a burglar caught when homeowner returned. Was the shooting justified? Article doesn’t say if the guy was armed.
It’ll be interesting to see what the DA decides.
The mother had been out with her two children, 5 and 10, when she came home and spotted the creep in one of her kid’s bedrooms.
Already armed with a handgun, she shot and killed 59-year-old man hiding in her child’s room.
