Positive Gun News of the Day

What a hero.

From the Chicago Sun-Times, yesterday morning in Chicago a 19-year-old man reportedly attempted to rob a 25-year-old woman at gunpoint; the woman, who has a concealed carry license, was able to draw her own weapon and fire one shot, fatally wounding the alleged assailant.

Good for her. What has the response been from second amendment censorship groups such as Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action? Gun rights groups (SAF, GOA, NRA) had to fight tooth and nail to secure the right to legally carry in Illinois and Chicago. And it’s still way too onerous and costly.

As, IIRC, CTA bans the carry of weapons on their buses and trains, and she was waiting at a bus stop, I’m curious to see whether Chicago will end up charging her with violating that ordinance. I’m not sure whether the prohibition against carrying weapons extends to things like a bus stop, or if a bus stop is even CTA property.

I’m glad she was able to stop the robbery.

From a couple of weeks ago, Woman dead and three injured in home invasion in Yuma, AZ. Four people (two men and two women) forced their way into a home after midnight; the homeowner opened fire, killing one of the attackers and injuring the other three.

Here’s another one from Houston this past weekend.

This time, there were apparently five home invaders wearing ski masks, and they broke in at about 1.00 in the morning. The homeowner shot all five, killing three, and wounding two. That’s some pretty impressive defensive work there!

From the story:

Wow!

I’ll be interested to follow this story and see what the deal is. I don’t know Houston at all, but the news images don’t make it look like an especially big house or a particularly prosperous neighborhood. It doesn’t seem like the sort of place that thieves would target for robbery or ransom money.

Last week in Brevard County, Florida, two men (at least one of whom was armed with a gun) reportedly broke into a home and threatened the occupants, including holding a woman at gunpoint. The woman’s son shot and killed both intruders. So far, no charges against any of the occupants of the home.

(Meanwhile, substantiated reports of extraterrestrial invasions of Earth or any part of it remain at zero for all of known history.)

A homeowner from Ionia County, Michigan, will not face charges related to a fatal shooting on New Year’s Day of this year. The deceased, Justin Eddy, 44, was reportedly under the influence of drugs (fentanyl and a BAC three times the legal limit) and was also apparently driving a stolen vehicle, before he barged into a couple’s home after 10:00 P.M., claiming “they” were chasing him. The couple who lived in the house initially attempted to aid Eddy (with the husband following Eddy back outside in an attempt to locate the mysterious “they”), but Eddy then forced his way back into the home, smashed the cellphone the wife was using to call 911, then assaulted the 69-year-old husband and attempted to grab his pistol, at which point the homeowner fatally shot Eddy in what has now been ruled justifiable self-defense.

Back in March a man was fatally shot in Lawton, Oklahoma; the man who shot Eric Nelson claimed that Nelson attempted to rob him at knife-point and that he shot Nelson in self defense. Yesterday authorities in Lawton announced they have in fact ruled the shooting a justifiable homicide.

And in Reno, Nevada, two women say 29-year-old Josue Oconitrillo attacked them and attempted to sexually assault one of them around 1 a.m. on April 20; the women say they tried to fight him off, then one of the women tried to stop him by displaying a handgun, then she finally shot and fatally wounded him. The article notes that police initially arrested the shooter and said that she was drunk, but she was later released, and that shooting has also now been ruled a justifiable homicide.

Cops. Honestly, who goes to Reno just to see a man die?

Police say a fatal shooting in Austin, Texas, last Saturday was in self-defense. The deceased and another man kicked in the door of an apartment a bit after 2 a.m., and the occupant shot and killed one of the men (at which point the other would-be home invasion robber ran).

(Just to add another hot-button social issue related to crime and punishment into the mix: Although police say the occupant of the apartment acted in self-defense, he has been arrested on marijuana charges. Whether this means he had some pot in his apartment for purely personal use, or he was a marijuana grower or dealer, the article doesn’t say. ***If ***the latter, that may explain why he was targeted for a 2 a.m. home invasion robbery. Either way, I can’t help but think that more sensible marijuana laws in Texas–to go along with the state’s already-liberal gun laws–would be a good idea. If the resident has been arrested merely for having a stash of marijuana for personal use, after already being the victim of something as traumatic as a home invasion robbery in the wee hours of the morning, that’s a miscarriage of justice. If the resident is in fact a grower or dealer, the fact that any such person is operating outside the law makes them a target for this sort of violent lawlessness, in a way that a beer and wine distributor or the owner of a liquor store isn’t.)

In Chattanooga police say a man will not be charged for shooting two other men to death late last night, as police say the killings were in self-defense. The shooter was also seriously injured and was hospitalized; the article doesn’t specify the nature of the injuries–whether they were also gunshot wounds or some other sort of injury.

Former State Sen. Leland Yee sent to prison for 5 years in gun-running, ‘shrimp boy’ case

Ex-Calif. State Sen. Leland Yee, gun control champion, heading to prison for weapons trafficking.

IIRC, by gunrunning, they mean military ordnance like “shoulder-fired rocket launchers.”

5 years is insanely low for that.

Not sure why the need to add a 3-year-old story to this thread.

Would be robber brings hatchet, the store clerk pulls out a gun. That’s the end of the robbery attempt.

Best example of responsible gun use that I can think of. That clerk would have been SOL if he wasn’t armed.

Huh, that is weird. I thought from the blurb, and it being posted recently, that he was sentenced recently. Nope, 2016.

Still a ridiculous undercharging from the Organs of Justice, and hardly Positive Gun News.

Some would think it’s positive when dealers in illegal guns are brought to justice. And it is news, or was.

YMMV
