As has already been mentioned, reading and posting in these threads is like having a conversation. Imagine if you were having a back and forth conversation with someone in person and they felt the need to “sign off” at the end of every comment by saying something like “Best wishes, Sigmonkey.” It would get old very quickly and Sigmonkey would just come across as a fucking idiot.
Ok, what if someone really did sign off all their posts–even outside of the Pit–with “Fuck you all.” That’s jerkish behaviour, right? That would get them a warning, then suspension or banning if they didn’t quit. Well at least one of those sig-liners has implied that he does, in fact, sometimes intend for it to be taken as a “fuck you all.”

. I’ve been reading this site off and on for years, in fact I almost bought a Charter Membership when the site first went to pay-to-post. Just couldn’t bring myself to pay for a membership at that point and over the years.
I should mention to even sven that I hope my comments didn’t come across too harshly and that I do enjoy reading about your experiences. The only point I had is due to the frequency of mentioning Cameroon; I hope you do still bring up some interesting tidbits from time to time. It might even just be the fact that you preference those posts by mentioning Cameroon explicitly; I think saying something more general while still providing whatever insight you intend to impart would come across as a lot less annoying.
Oh, I’m well aware that it’s the name of a salamander; I just don’t like the looks of it. Calling himself “Northern Red Salamander” would be sort of lame, but using the proper classification Latin name makes it cool? I don’t know, I don’t really have a good point here, it’s just something that annoys me. Throw in a couple of off-the-wall posts (I actually tend to agree with prr a lot of the time) and he gets a mention.
One other poster who falls under the superfluous obligatory salutation category is CC who often closes posts with “xo, CC”. Is that supposed to be hugs and kisses? Seriously? I thought people stopped doing that in grade school.
Finally, I should bring up Jinx, who, moreso in the past than recently, has a tendency to ask blindingly simple questions to GC that even the most rudimentary of google searches would clear up in minutes. Like I said, he’s been better about it as of late, but I remember a time a few years back where he would post thread after thread of thundering idiocy.
The thing is, most posters, when they sign off, may or may not be returning to the thread. IMO, it’s to the posters to whom they are responding that the “Regards” or whatever are intended, not the board, forum or the thread itself. Frankly, had Shodan not already adopted Regards himself I would probably have used it a great deal myself. To us tighty-righties (a misnomer if ever there was one), politeness is a virtue…and occasionally a barb.
