That’s awesome, you’re my hero!
NOUN: Slang A smart aleck.
OTHER FORMS: smart-ass —ADJECTIVE
this post is full of win, well at least if the lack of crap tacked onto the end was on purpose it is, if you just forgot then its handcrafted suck.
Lekatt, jesus h christ with ignorance that dense we should find a way to harness the gravitational fields it creates to fight global warming.
I feel you. Avoiding overused puns is like stepping, trepidatiously, through an area known to contain hidden explosives in the ground.
But it can be done, by relying on mental prowess to deny the physical.
Is anyone hating me yet?
If you send me a dollar, I’d be willing to hate you.
Could always be like me and just be a quiet presence so no one is entirely sure that you exist and can’t despise you!
/fades back into woodwork
Who said that?
Don’t you just hate people like that, who skulk about anonymously? They’re up to something, you can just bet. Biding their time, waiting for just the right moment and then! Pow! If you can fairly hate people for what they do, I don’t see why you can’t hate them for what they are *going *to do! Saves a lot of time, for one thing.
Might as well go for the comprehensive approach: Hate everyone for everything. Then you never overlook an opportunity to get your hate on.

So far I’m 100 percent more liked than hated. This good. Sexy time USA.
Anyone who tries to touch my library automatically gets on my enemy list.
Oh, and have I mentioned Stoid? Just for being batshit insane, and making most of us leftists look bad? (Not QUITE as bad as Der Trihs, but she’s up there)
Wait, is “library” a code for something else here?
Nope, follow my link in his quoted portion.
Oh come on, Guin! How can you possibly ask a guy to dislike a gal that runs an…erm, erotic site?!
Tell you what, how about you ask her to include a “Classy Nude Males” section and then come back and gripe.
Seriously, me likes Stoid. Strong personality on her – bet it’d take me at least two days to use her as a nightstand.
I keed, I keed…a bit* anyway.
*Please refrain from Pony Girl jokes. Not my thong!
This is the first time I believe I’ve ever read a thread for more than 4 or 5 pages. (I’m on vacation, and was a little curious.)
But from the moment I saw it I knew it would go on and on into a–well let’s not say trainwreck, but at at least a derailment, and I thought what’s the point of a thread like this? I wasn’t surprised to see it go up to 10 pages.
I can’t find any reason to hate (or “not be able to stand”) someone on an anonymous message board, no matter what they say. What’s the point in that? But there are some things that I find annoying or pointless. That posters do.
–Threads that degenerate into something that is 85% just two or four posters going on and on with tit for tat “You said this, but…” “Show me where I said that?” “You said it here in this post.” “That doesn’t mean what you said it means.” ad nauseum.
–Threads that are titled something like this: “What are some things that you don’t do that other people do?” Then the OP say something like, “I don’t put catchup on my hotdogs, for example, but all my friends do. How about you other dopers.” Then the thread goes on and on for at least 5 pages and probably not many people really care if some other poster doesn’t wear lipstick but all her friends do–but more importantly the OP probably doesn’t care at all either. He just wants to tell everyone that he doesn’t use catchup on his hot dogs. And he knows that his username will always be on the New Posts page because everyone wants to say something like “I don’t eat hamburgers with buns, but all my friends do,” or something like that.
BTW: One thing people haven’t mentioned about putting a sig line in the post is that it’s one more bit of extraneous stuff I have to delete when I quote someone’s post–one more annoying task.
You forgot about McCarthyism. Ah, the good old days of the House Un-American Activities Committee! Starving Artist must have some kind of selective memory.
I agree with this. How is telling an audience about a place probably most don’t know well any different from a poster in Alabama describing things there to someone in California?
What makes you so sure there weren’t people who didn’t keep it in private? Franklin is famous, but we don’t know that much about the average person.
Hah! Obvious not much, unless they assume everyone drives about 95 MPH. I wouldn’t put too much confidence in Yahoo Maps or Map Quest; they’re often wrong. And you completely leave out the people who don’t have a car.
Language is not an exact science of rights and wrongs. Usually the people who determine what is “right” in a language are the rich and powerful.
Knowing Starving Artist, that’s probably one of the “good” things he’s talking about.
Pffft. You’re about a week late.
Naw, he thinks that the left is a far greater danger to us than McCarthy ever thought the communists were.
The left has certainly done more damage to the fabric of this society than McCarthyism ever did.
But, on to the main point…which is an apparent attempt, yet again, to paint conservative, polite American society of the fifties and sixties with the broad brush of McCarthyism and completely ignores the fact that once McCarthy’s charges were found to be specious and that he was indeed unable to substantiate the charges he claimed to be able to substantiate, both the government and the public of that time rightfully turned on him and he was ruined as a result.
But first, a little context is necessary. You have to understand that to the conservative mind, it’s hard to understand why anyone would embrace communism. Therefore, it’s hard to understand where support for it could be coming from and how deep that support is.
Secondly – and I mean this with every fibre of my being – Adolf Hitler (Hi, Godwin) was an absolute piker when it comes to inflicting death and misery on huge numbers of people when compared with those dealt by the world’s Communist dictators and governments in the 20th century.
Thirdly, at that time, the U.S.S.R. and China were engaged in worldwide expansionism and trying to bring as much of the world as they could get away with under the rule of Communism and were murdering and running over people and countries right and left in their determination to do so.
And forth, Communism is (or at least was ) antithetical to American ways and democracy and it was therefore, literally, un-American.
People did not want to live under Communist rule. They watched entire families, children and all, machine-gunned at the Berlin wall simply for trying to cross into West Berlin, etc., etc.
So Communism, as it was practiced in reality, was a very, very scary thing to almost everyone in the country at that time.
So, McCarthy took advantage of that fact and got the country all stirred up and looking for Commies under every bed, and the fear was hardly limited to conservatives. Even John F. Kennedy once said “Hell, half my voters (i.e., liberals) in Massachusetts look on McCarthy as a hero.”
Once it turned out that McCarthy was full of hooey, however, the country turned on him and his career was over.
In other words, the system worked and McCarthyism was rebuked.
The notion that somehow the polite, civilized, mature and well-dressed society that existed then was just faunching at the bit to embrace punitive anti-Communist bigotry, and therefore had to go, is a fiction of liberal history revisionism and is intended, like always, to promote the fictional idea that fifties and sixties society was evil and had to go and that things are better now.
