Preacher -- The New Show / Old Comic Now Airing on AMC

That’s as good a guess as any. The TV show, right now at least, is very much it’s own thing, and that’s not bad. I just watched the new episode, and there was a lot I liked, but it didn’t have that wizbang “holycrapthisisawesome!” feeling that I got from the first episode.

Yes it was. I watched it a couple of times. I loved the shows reality of having Cassidy slip around in all that blood.

I don’t remember the lullaby thing from the comics because I finished it back in the early '00s but based on what gets revealed later in the comics I can see why they used a lullaby as the incantation.

I agree. The principle three actors are really well cast. Hopefully the other main characters not introduced yet are equally well cast.
-I think the actor for the cowboy was cast well for his looks.
-Jesse is starting to figure out what happened to him.
-Jesse dropping dead weight after he drank Cassidys drink made me laugh.

I’m loving this show because it’s like revisiting a friend you haven’t seen in a long time. Like I said I finished the series in 2002, I think, and I have forgotten most of it except for the highlights and major plot points. So watching the show is bringing back good memories of the story and anticipation for what I know is ahead.

I kind of want to bust out the trade paperbacks and follow along with the tv show but I’m afraid I might get disappointed in the tv show as I realize what they’ve changed or left out. But I kind of want to just watch the show and have it be it’s own thing since I’ve forgotten so much from the comics.

I’m not sure what you mean by ugly. I am a photographer and I thought that the cinematography is beautiful. I would like to know who is setting up the shots, the director or the camera guys, because they are fantastic!!!

Oh, shit, yeah! I’m very interested in how they play out the “Cowboy” in this series!

People who are familiar with the comic know exactly who this guy is!

That was my take as well. The thing (alien or semidivine spirit) is symbiotic and it was looking for a host and all the others weren’t the right mix of Good and Evil, except for Jesse. They were all majority good or evil and that imbalance meant its power couldn’t be contained, so they exploded.

I never heard of the comics before now. Does the spirit in him give Jesse any other powers besides the Voice That Cannot Be Denied? Cuz if Cassidy was telling the truth about what was in that flask, oughtn’t he at least be a little sick?

Presuming you are responding to my comment, I was referring to the overt splatter.

I’m toying with doing some research into why people enjoy such overt, blatant violence - even find it amusing. Considered starting a thread, but assumed it had been done before and that I ought to look for it first. I have no objection to representations of violence, but for reasons of which I’m not entirely sure, I find extremely graphic representations of violence disturbing and not what I desire in my entertainment.

Other than the blood and gore and grotesque deformities, I truly appreciate so much of the show - including how it is filmed. Am disappointed that the choice to go extreme in terms of gore took my wife out of watching it, and makes me seriously question whether I wish to continue. BTW, I had similar thoughts about Ash v. Evil Dead.

It’s called “gallows humor” or “whistling past the graveyard”. It’s a defense mechanism. You make jokes about what you fear, in order to belittle it.

I like the amount of gore they have shown so far. It’s absurd which makes it comedic and cartoony and thus not scary.

I liked the pilot OK, and thought this was a bit better, so I’m in for the first season.

Episode 3 tonight, me little droogies!

No thoughts on the last episode? I thought it was largely spinning its wheels; the show needs to figure out a direction to go soon. I’m already over the whole Tulip-Jesse will-he-won’t-he dynamic…

I liked that they showed us a bit more about Tulip and Jesse’s background, but I agree that there needs to be more progression. I enjoyed the episode, especially the Cassidy parts, but it wasn’t as good as the first two episodes. But there was some place setting with the “government” guys and with Jesse’s power that will pay off, and a tiny bit more about Tulip that will hopefully pay off sooner rather than later.

Just binged on the first four, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it so far. The pace is slow-ish, sure, but we’re learning a lot about all the various town denizens, few of which are cookie cutter. I don’t mind the slow burn at all.

I got a chuckle out of Cassidy playing our Incompetent Angels, then naturally heading out for an evening of debauchery.

I agree, the slow burn is actually paying off much better than I would have thought. They will have to hit the road eventually, since the comic was primarily a road trip story. I guess we’re going to need a reason for Jessie to go find God. (And one setting is much less expensive)

I wouldn’t expect this show is have any more in common with the comic than it currently does.

Well Cassidy was pushing for a road trip already to get away from the angels and I figure in the end they’ll have to. The angels aren’t going to give up and won’t stay dead.

Definitely a set up episode. Tulip is now wise to the vampire thing, a “serve God” command destined to go horribly wrong and the ominous angel phone ringing. Not my fav episode of the lot but you can’t have 13 barn burners.

so - someone please translate Cassidy for me -

What the holy fuck did he say to tulip in front of the blood refrigerator?

“You were right, love. I think I am going to make it.”

thanks - I think I heard “you were right” - after that, I heard garblegarbleerflunk.

So - other question to confirm -

Girl/Boy smoking that got Jesse the paddlin - Carlos and Tulip, right?

Who is Carlos?
My own question: Does Jesse understand/believe that Cassidy is an actual vampire, or does he think it’s another of Cassidy’s made-up stories like the angels?
