This dog has not done any of these things. Nor does it sound capable of doing most of them.
Why is it so wrong or disgusting, in your eyes, for someone to have compassion for this apparently harmless animal? You’ve got the right to your own opinion about how you would handle the matter. What I find truly disturbing is that you seem to get angry at the idea that anyone might feel or act differently.
I’m an animal lover. My cats are my babies. I hate hearing about abandoned dogs, because I would so love to have a dog, but can’t.
But I don’t see what’s so horrible about Unregistered Bull’s suggestion to let animal control take the dog, other than that it could have been phrased a little more tactfully.
Whatever happens with animal control, it’s likely to be better for all concerned than letting the dog roam free and take her chances with cars, wild animals, other dogs, et cetera.
Obviously, if you can find a no-kill shelter that will take the dog, that would be better. But taking her to a kill shelter would be an improvement on the status quo.
“Whatever you did unto one of the least, you did unto me.”
So if it’s “just a dog” it must be one of the very least. Hmm.
I don’t necessarily believe in the big G but I do think that how one treats living creatures, human or otherwise, says a lot about what kind of person they are. Life is frighteningly easy to destroy but not so easy to create. Compassion used to be considered a virtue.
Now we aren’t sure if she’s pregnant… possibly already weaned.
My wife wants to keep her… so we’re off to the vet tomorrow. We’ll get her spayed and maybe the abortion thing if necessary. Then we’ll try to house break her, probably starting with a crate.
We bathed her today and gave her a flea and tick treatment, and introduced her to my parent’s dog. She seems to get along with everybody and heals very well when we walk.
You’ve got “sucker” stamped on your forehead, but you and the wife have good hearts. I’m so glad you decided to keep her! And given her size, don’t be surprised if the vet suggests the abortion thing if she’s pregnant. You don’t know if she can have a safe labor gien you don’t know if daddy was a Great Dane or not.
Now, we need a name for a wiener-eating wiener dog.
Yay! I’m such a sucker for poor little lost animals I hear about. I’ve never had an encounter with a stray animal before and thank goodness I haven’t because I’d probably try to take them all in. My parents would definitely not appreciate that. Eleusis, you and your wife are good people. What are you going to name her??
YAY !!! You and Mrs. Eleusis are heros to that little dog … and to me . You will be rewarded ten-fold by the love that little dog will give you . Congratulations !
A similar thing happened to me 4 years ago. At first we taught that she was pregnant (which I found weird, because she looked to be 6 months old), but we found a little bit later that she was just malnourished (by the amount of cucumber seeds she shat  !). We decided to keep her, although we already had two dogs (which was fortunate because they both died the next year from old age). Now we only have Jackie (an Australian cattle dog mix it seems) and she is a sweetheart. I wouldn’t part with her for all the money in the world.
I’m glad to hear it- I adopted a stray last year and he’s my baby. I love him to pieces. You’re good people!
I also cannot say enough about good crate training- ours is fully trained now and will often just go in and sit with his treasures (whatever toys he wants to have all to himself) with the door open during “free reign of the house” time.
And exactly how, praytell, is this dog being a nuisance to you? Failing that, how are you qualified to judge? In other words, what “validates” your viewpoint?
First, I want to say “YAY!” That dog will likely love you for the rest of her existence, with all her being. They say dogs always live in the NOW, but I do believe that they can remember THEN for a very long time. She’ll always remember where she was and be grateful to you for rescuing her from that.
OK, is it only me that’s got the “Marley & Marley” song (from Muppet’s Christmas Carol) going through my head now? Thought so.
Good on you guys for taking the bitch in.
I had the same situation a while back, but mine was a pregger cat.
We took her in, let her have the babies in a safe environment, spayed momma once they were weaned, and then made 5 people very, very happy with fluffy new companions (well, one older not-so-fluffy-but-so-sweet-she’d-rot-your-teeth momma cat ).
If she’s a breed dog, maybe you could let her have the babies and sell them for a few extra dollars?
I’m glad you have a new friend, and I hope that you’ve made sure she’s not someone else’s old friend (sounds like she wasn’t).
That said, the above really isn’t something to encourage. Finding homes for puppies is hard, if you care at all about where they’re going. Finding good homes who will also PAY for a backyard litter is even harder. Take them to a shelter, and let them do the hard work, whether that hard work is finding a home or euthanizing the puppies.
And it’s sooo unlike him to hijack a thread to espouse his beliefs regardless of what the general tone of the thread is…
At least he has his schtick.
