Poor Sasha Cohen! She has to wear one of those hideous outfits during a skating “exhibition.” That means nobody will get to see it. . . thank Og!
I thought for sure Santino was going to be tidying up his workspace tonight. But once again. . . . Noooooo! So he’s Mr. Good Television for this season. Oy!
I didn’t hate Emmet’s outfit as much as the judges did. And it certainly didn’t look tacky. Don’t those judges ever watch actual skater girls??? For that matter, don’t the contestants ever watch actual skater girls.
(My favorite was Chloe’s little turquoise floaty number. It would be fine for an “exhibition” but not for a competition.)
There’s a preview of it up on the website. It is disappointingly un-Zoolander. No breakdance fighting or anything!
I have to say I was happy with who won this competition. I actually think Zuleema’s outfit was the most flattering of them all while still being innovative. Chloe’s would have made Sasha look like a turquoise Christmas tree. Santino’s, as always, was tacky tacky tacky. “And now, Sasha Cohen, interpreting the life of the first Thanksgiving turkey . . .” When he wasn’t eliminated, I was frankly shocked.
Poor Emmet. First the bright pink leotard, then being eliminated. You’d think that alone would have won him some points.
I’m sure Santino would never admit it, but I think he would have been eliminated if Emmet’s design had been even a little more creative or unusual. His rather boring dress gave the judges an excuse not to get rid of Santino.
I thought that, for a figure-skating outfit, Zulema’s deserved to win. I even liked the pleated skirt.
Wow! Who gave the horse tranquilizers to Staintino?!? He was actually subdued at the judging. I think he might have even realized his outfit really, really sucked!
I would’ve liked to go with Daniel’s. I loved the color! Nick’s was, as always, lovely. I just wish I could get to the Project Runway website, though - their upgrade won’t allow me to access their site, since I can’t download any players on this computers. I miss Tim’s take…
I don’t know about the website (you might try it). . . but the show repeats all over the place. One day/time I’m sure about is Saturday at 6pm eastern time. Check your listings.
Someone please explain to me how this was any different from the Marla/Lupe fiasco. In M/L’s situation, one designer copied a dress by Chloe and the other designed a dress with a case of terminal whickety-whack. With Santino/Emmett, one designer copied a dress made by every other person who ever designed a boring old skating dress (only he threw in some bonus “tooty”), and the other designed a dress with mange. Santino’s trim could not have been any more whickety or whack, even he knew it sucked, but he’s still hanging in there…
What a good sport Emmett is, though. Wow. And Tim Gunn said fuck!
I can’t really argue with the winner. Zulema’s design was innovative and practical. She worked in a medium she’s not accustomed to and succeeded. I’m gaining respect for her abilities after this week and the way she saved Kara’s butt last time.
I don’t care if you have to cut and cry. But you have to [cut and cry.
I was disappointed in my husband’s (Nick’s) outfit. It was original but not particularly stunning, as I’ve come to expect from him.
I think Daniel got short-shrift in the episode. His design is beautiful. I love the color.
Besides Zulema, I think Andrea really had the best shot of being the winner, even though Sasha did seem as impressed as i was. His design was unusual without being outlandish. It would turn heads, and in a good way.
Why the judges and Sasha were so taken by Chole’s design I’ll never know. the idea was interesting; but the result was awful, IMHO. But her color choice was good. Hers was creative and not the stuff of elimination, though.
Which brings us to why I’m not too baffled by Emmett being cut instead of Santino. It’s a simple question of Creativity. Emmett has consistently been blah. Never horrible; but never brilliant. At least Santino takes chances. He either wins or crash and burns. Neither the middle of the road nor bi-polar effort will utimately win the competition. However, when it comes right down to it, bi-polar is more interesting to watch than prosaic. Yes, Santino being kept was a made-for-TV choice; but we are watching TV and Emmett wasn’t good enough to win anyway and would have been elimated eventually.
That being said, I think Anne Slowey’s comment that Emmett’s design was “vulgar” was totally off-base and should get her OUT as a judge. As Tim says in his blog
One last thing: Nick, you better call me before Tim does; cause he was just adorable last night.
I can understand why the judges chose to get rid of Emmett over Santino but I still wish they had gotten rid of Santino anyway. His dress was just plain hideous. And I like Emmett’s personality so much more than I like Santino’s. He comes across as a very nice person. I particularly liked his last comment to the judges where he joked about his loss being to the ugly pink shirt on his back.
I’m not overly impressed with any of the efforts I saw last night. I am not surprised Zulema won because her dress, even though it was very ugly, was still the closest thing to an interesting dress that could actually be worn on the ice.
I can’t wait to see next week’s show. Jay is apparently going to deliver a serious smackdown to at least one contestant.
I was horribly disappointed to see that Santino wasn’t eliminated last night, but his phoenix/turkey dress had great potential to create a rare moment of international unity if it had made it to a competition, as people across the globe-Christian, Muslim, black, white, Asian, European, gay, straight, liberal, conservative-said in unison “Holy crap, that’s fugly.”
I agree with Tim that Emmet’s outfit wasn’t vulgar. Dull - but that’s what ice skating/gymnastics outfits look like. There was nothing about that dress which would cause comment, good or bad. It seems that none of them have ever seen figure skating, how could they not have recognized the outfits they were delivered?
But, ice skating outfits have to show line and most of the ones they created were not good for that. They were baggy, or had too much going on. Santino’s was ridiculous. He hid the skater’s body. I’ve seen phoenix rising costumes before. It isn’t a new concept. But the skater could move in them (which you couldn’t in that) and she also didn’t have extraneous crap hanging off her ass. They also have to look good spinning, and most of them would have looked crappy. Chloe’s christmas tree looked ok stationary, it would not have looked good moving. Not at all.
I thought Daniel V’s & Zulema’s were the best. Santino is only there because he makes good tv. But that’s already gotten very old.
Did anyone else notice that Emmett and Nick had beaded their personal skater outfits with their initial à la Laverne’s big L? I loved the fact that they wore the outfits though.
I’m not sad to see Emmett go. He lamented too much about how he’s a designer for menswear. His speaking style was also too halting. If he had a point, I’d have left, gotten a drink, taken a bathroom break, and have come back before he got to word #2. Nice guy, but boring designs.
When I saw the preview for the show and then saw the outfits, I was sure that it would be Zulema’s that would be called vulgar. The beading lines made me look at what was covered up by the flesh toned fabric. The same way with Daniel V’s (or was it Nick’s?) offset fabric that had one breast in a different fabric that really drew attention to it.
The more I looked at Chloe’s, the more I couldn’t think Xmas tree. I didn’t see what was so exciting about the color though.
I was disappointed in Nick this week. Chloe was interesting but impractical. I’m actually surpries that Zulema won-- skating outfits don’t usually have that much Randoph Duke-ish fake nudity, and I thought it came off a little vulgar, and it framed the model’s stomach in a chubby looking way.
(BTW- whatever happened to Randolph Duke?)
Anyway, Andrae’s looked hard to move in, Daniel’s looked beautiful but a bit too short, I actually liked Emmet’s with the silver spiderweb vibe, I really liked Kara’s, with the one sleeve and the jazz vibe (though I understand that a fringed skirt might not be the best look for spins), and Santino’s was, yet again, ugly.
I think Santino has really gone downhill. I didn’t like his first design, but his “clothes off your back” outfit was impressive, and his Barbie design was pretty nice. It all turned with the lingerie-- totally awful. He won the Nicky Hilton challenge, but I agreed with Heidi-- too much in too short a space on top, and too big and flowy on the bottom. The banana republic design was all right but terribly wrong for the challenge. And this week’s was just laughable. Even he agreed. He seems to be getting worse. In the beginning, I thought he was a talented designer (if a nasty person) and that he’d probably make it to the final 3, along with Nick and Chloe. Now, I think it’ll be Chloe, Nick, and Daniel or Andrae.
The more I think about it, and pay attention to his behavior with the other designers in the extra videos on the website, the more I lean towards Santino not being a complete bastard. I think he just has a very snarky and sarcastic sense of humor that can easily be misconstrued as nasty when taken out of context. The editors really are manipulating us quite skillfully in their portrayal of Santino. I’m actually starting to feel bad for the guy, moreso than I did for Wendy Pepper. Watching the videos on the site go a long way towards humanizing him. Now, if he lost the “rabbi down on his luck” look, I’d cut him even more slack.
I think that chubby look would go away with a good fitting of the outfit. You really need to drape something like that on the person that’s going to wear it, not a mannequin. Nobody is truly as evenly proportioned as a mannequin. The designers just don’t have time to do a perfect fitting on their models. There will be fine-tuning to the trim to suit Sasha Cohen’s body on the final outfit.
I’ve only just started watching the show, but each week it seems Santino is called on the carpet with the worst designs. I understand the concept of “good TV”, but it doesn’t make sense that he doesn’t get the boot at some point. Chloe said she knew people might not “get” her designs, but that she designed for herself. Well, doofus - that’s fine if you’re sewing for only you, but when you’re job is to make clothes that will sell, you’d better get the mindset of your target market first and foremost.
For this task, I’d’ve asked to hear her program music to design around. I think that’s important for a skater and would be interesting to see how the designers interpreted it within those confines.
