What did we think of this? Overall, I liked it, though it’s hard to be surprised when Tim walks in for a team challenge midway and is all, “I have news for you…SECOND LOOK!” I’d be surprised if there weren’t, at this point!
My thoughts on Milla’s? Ugh. March of the Penguins! This is why I’m not Fashion, though. She also seems like a bitch to work with.
Glad to see Ping went home finally. Anthony’s cute as a bug, though, and I’m glad he stayed.
Did anyone see Models of the Runway? I was going to–was a little curious about the clip where they talked about the model throwing her designer under the bus–which designers was it, again? I mean, I remember her on the runway saying she was barely fitted but I forget who she was talking about. Do models ever talk on the runway? Sometimes they do when they’re the client but they rarely seem to otherwise. Maybe they do and it’s edited out for us, but that was surprising.
It was Ping’s model–remember how she told the judges that Ping didn’t attempt to fit her in the dress at all?
Personally I’m sad to see Ping go home. I feel like she was just really culturally misunderstood. Her stuff is really weird and provocative, but those are the sorts of people who wind up redefining their field.
FTR, I’m a terrible judge of fashion. The judges always hate stuff I like.
Did anyone else notice the dissing of the babydoll dress? A few seasons ago they were pissing themselves over every one that came down the runway, gushing about how it really showed off the model’s great figure despite the fact that, to me, it looked remarkably like she was 6 months pregnant. I guess that look is just soooo three years ago.
I really like Ping’s aesthetic, and I think if she’d actually tacked that shoulder up so that the draping was part of the actual dress and you could move around instead of having to hold your dress up she probably wouldn’t have gone home.
Miss Sophia was in trouble last night, which isn’t really unexpected. The judges have the same criticisms of him they had of Kayne–too costumey, too pageanty, too much floof and glitter and whatnot. In short, too much flamboyantly gay Southerner. The design philosophy and overall aesthetic of the Deep South is rather out of step with that of the larger fashion world, and if a contestant can’t bridge that gap, they’re fucked. Miss Sophia doesn’t strike me as much of a bridge builder.
I love Anthony. I LOVED when Tim was looking over his and Seth whatshisnames design and Seth said something contradictory and Anthony said, “Hush! Don’t go acting up in front of company!” SO something my grandmother would have said.
I did not like Ping at all and was glad to see her go. I didn’t understand her designs. I didn’t like her attitude. I just was tired of her. That being said, I do think Jessy went into the challenge with a chip on his shoulder once he got Ping as a partner and kinda acted like a jerk to her from the get-go.
I didn’t get Mila’s design. It looked like a jogging suit to me.
Jesse and Ping should have been auffed together. Both are equally annoying. He was remarkably smug for someone picked nearly last.
The models need to shut up. They’ve been picked because they’re tall people with pretty faces not because they have any kind of fashion expertise or authentic training. Who cares what a coathanger thinks? Worse, who wants to listen to one speak?
Watching Tim Gunn at the Met it occured to me that that’s what else Tim Gunn should be doing. I’d love to see him host a series about the history of fashion. Wouldn’t be cool to hear his direct insights about the work of people like Main Bocher or Lacroix? He could travel to Italy and talk about what the Romans wore, walk us through a history of the hat and give us insights about the history of shoes.
Mila’s looked very motorcyle jacket gone awry. Either that or couture by Adidas.
Ping was just another sacrificial “out there” designer. Unconventional and niche.
Cutting edge and good at what they do but when forced into designing within parameters outside what they normally do they get lost. Like having Bob Mackie make a suit for Obama’s SOTU address. Set up to fail.
The judges seem to have an affinity for sportswear inspired clothing (I still can’t get over Daniel Vosovic’s win in the All Star challenge). Michael Kors has also mentioned his love for separates before so Mila killed two birds with one stone in this challenge.
I didn’t like it either though. I actually thought most of the dresses were pretty meh especially in contast to the dresses they saw at the Met. The Madame Gres and Dior dresses were gorgeous. I also couldn’t help thinking what past designers could have done with a $500 budget (Christian Siriano, Chris March, Chloe Dao, Jay McCarroll or even Santino). Still this season is heads and shoulders above last year and for that I’m grateful.
Oh that would be so awesome. Also, some biographical info on some of the recent big names and how they changed us from the world of suits with vests and hats for men and dresses with corsets for women. I can hear his voice and see it in my mind. “We’re here at the former home of Coco Chanel…”
I had a hard time concentrating on this episode. I might have to watch it again. I was glad to see Ping go home. Quirky is amusing for a few minutes, but she got tiresome in the first episode.
I liked the twist to the second outfit. No one looked surprised that they were making another look, but they all looked surprised when it wasn’t in conjunction with their own.
I guess it depends on who your cable provider is. I have Lifetime in HD, but I don’t have Bravo in HD (which sucks a lot).
I wasn’t impressed with this episode. Glad Ping went home, but I think that nobody really even came close to meeting the challenge. Everybody was pretty meh, and like everybody else, I wasn’t impressed with Milla’s coat. Oh well, still better than last season.
Ping had too strikes against her. First, she truly has a different vision. Second, the cultural gap. If she could have clearly explained her vision, it might have worked, but without that, no way. I wasn’t sorry to see her go.
Anthony (what’s with calling him Miss Sophia, btw?) is a hoot. I don’t think he is a great designer, but I love him anyway. The line quoted above about acting up in front of company made me laugh. I hope he stays just for comedy value.
I hated Mila’s design. The jacket was fine, but the stripes down the skirt? Hideous. I think she is a force to be contended with, though. My other pick for top three so far is Maya.
