That was such a cool task. I loved how Heidi sat there as the designers showed her their ideas. She had the cutest look on her face. Her comments to Zulema were amusing and well deserved.
I have mixed feelings about the outcome.
It’s great Diana is still there. My husband and I thought she was a goner after she got picked to lead. But it’s a good thing she went last because that may have been the only team she could have led. Her snark about how the model should either wear the clothes or find another job was very funny when said in her little girl voice.
I thought Daniel V.'s idea was adorable but his execution blah and boring.
I’m sorry Daniel F. was gone. I liked his design much better than Santino’s clown clothing. It looked darling rather than grandmotherly to me. Then again I’ve liked nearly all his designs much better than the runway judges.
Santino looked more than ever like Zod from Superman II in that stupid jacket. I think they probably kept him around because they liked his previous work and he’s a very dramatic character.
So far overall I think this season so far is just as good as last season.
I was so disappointed that Santino wasn’t eliminated. His stuff for this challenge looked like some sort of Swiss Miss costume from hell, and I hate his attitude. I mean, I know that fashion is cutthroat, and like with any creative endeavor, you have to believe in yourself and project confidence, but dang, is he arrogant. I find it hard to appreciate even good work like he presented on the previous challenges when the person creating it is so smug and nasty, and such a sore loser. And it really didn’t help my opinion of him that he was badmouthing Emmett, who I think is my favorite designer on the show. (Nick is a close second – I loved his Barbie outfit.)
And Santino did totally look like Zod from Superman II. hee hee, I was trying to figure out who he looked like all through the judging part.
That may have been the world’s ugliest lingerie. It was absolutely hideous. Whenever I’ve heard “it’s supposed to come off” I haven’t needed to finish the thought with “because you can’t stand looking at something that hideous for another single minute.”
How did Santino not lose?
I liked Daniel F & co’s designs, but I’m not a fashionista. So, what do I know? Still, I could see wearing them. Or at least someone else wearing them. Or someone in this universe possibly thinking they might want to wear them someday. Santino’s were just bleccch.
It was just a matter of time before Daniel got eliminated. He spends too much time doing the Daniel Shuffle and barely finishes in time. Every challenge so far has come down to the last second before he finishes. He’s even sewing dresses onto the models while they’re having their hair and makeup finished. Eventually that would have been his downfall had he survived this challenge. That being said, though, he is a stand-up guy. He demonstrated far more integrity and character when he never pointed fingers at his team and took total responsibility. for the failure. And it was a failure. All three designs were too similar. They have to create a theme but not be the same garment with a slightly different cut.
I think the decision to let Daniel go and keep Santino was based on culumative effort. Overall, Santino has outperformed Daniel. But last night’s designs were awful. I loved the idea; but the execution was breathtakingly bad. Based on his interactions with other people so far, I don’t think he’ll ever be a big-name designer. A good designer can layout the patterns and explain their vision so the team can execute and build the clothes. Santino doesn’t seem to have any interpersonal skills. He couldn’t communicate to Emmett what he wanted so Emmett was left flailing about and the project suffered. He was lucky that Nick seemed to grok the concept and was able to help build the costumes. I still think Santino will not win; but he’ll likely make it to Fashion Week.
I don’t know what to say about Diana’s stuff. It wasn’t great; but it wasn’t horrible either. Solidly middle of the pack right now.
Daniel V. won this one hands down, IMHO. His was the only collection that looked like real lingerie. It held the theme yet had individual pieces that were distinct. He seemed to be an excellent project leader. He communicated, listened and led. He gets high marks and raises my opinion of him. Could be a spoiler.
I thought for sure that Emmett would be the one to go. Can’t make patterns, can’t sew, and his teammates ganged up on him. I thought for sure that the team leaders would get cut a little more slack since they did have it harder than the rest of the designers.
I’m going to miss Daniel. I was really rooting for him to make it to Fashion Week.
I loved Daniel F. What a great guy. And cute! (plus he’s the only straight guy ) And I totally see what he was going for. He’s a romantic at heart, I think.
But, ultimately, I think Santino’s more versatile. He’s still an ass (which I’m sure figured into the drama side of the equation) but he’ll probably come up with more innovative stuff. Plus, I don’t think Daniel F’s talents are suited to the format of the show. He simply needs more time to fully realize his vision. And how often do real designers have to whip something completely new in a day and a half, anyway?
I do think the format of the show was a little bit unfair and there are others who should’ve gone before Daniel F. Marla, Andraema, Zulema all seem weaker to me.
BTW, he’s got a website with his designs: Daniel Franco. Looks like he’s doing well. I’m tempted to drop him an email to congragulate him on a fine showing and wish him luck.
The way he was talking to Heidi about making love when giving his presentation, I thought it rather obvious.
I went to the Bravo website. According to Tim Gunn’s podcast, Santino’s hissy fit went on for ninety minutes! He yelled at everyone including Heidi.
I don’t care how well he designs, he ought to have been fired for antics like that. What a jerk! The producers are clearly keeping him around for drama.
Daniel F’s exit was both graceful and very classy. I think he’s gone a long way to change the public’s perception of him.
There’s a disclaimer at the end of Project Runway saying that all decisions are made in consultation with the producers and Bravo. My guess is that this was one of those times when they had a lot of influence over the judges. It seemed clear to me that the judges would have gone with Daniel, but they were probably told that they had to keep Santino for the entertainment (Wendy Pepper?) factor. I still think Daniel had a great story arc, even if it was shortened. You rarely get to see someone reclaim his dignity and integrity by competing on a reality show.
I hated everyone’s collection. DF’s was uninspired and boring, Diana had a good idea but all I could think of was “how long does it take to tie chiffon scarves around electrical tape,” DV’s was basically Macy’s underwear with some cuffs and ties and Santino’s collection was like something from Springtime for Hitler.
All I could think about was how much fun Austin, Jay and Kara would have had with this. Austin would have produced La Perla Redux, Jay’s would have been bondage couture and Kara would have been a lighter version of Agent Provacateur.
I’m still pulling for my girl Diana to come through. Aside from the rotating polarities-I thought her first design was badass in this futuristic way and her hoodie/Barbie outfit kicked ass and was at least something an alterna-teeanger would think about wearing.
I didn’t see this episode but I just wanted to add that I would love to see Santino go very soon. I don’t like his arrogance but what really bugs me about him is the apparent glee he takes in everyone else’s failures and meltdowns. Sure it’s a competition but you don’t need to be laughing while someone is crying. I didn’t think his work so far was that great either.
