MODERATOR POSES QUESTION: It’s pretty well impossible to run a single thread about a show and not have spoilers. Coupla suggestions/thoughts:
We could just add the word “SPOILERS” to the thread title, and not worry about it. People who don’t want an episode spoiled shouldn’t read the thread.
When we’re starting discussion of a new episode, someone could post a post that just says, “OK, discussion of “Episode 6: Making men’s swimsuits from paper clips” starts here.” That way, someone reading along who doesn’t want spoilers can stop reading when they get to that announcement.
If you don’t want spoilers, then you shouldn’t subscribe to the thread. People who don’t want spoilers need to take some precautions on their own, like not reading stuff that will clearly have spoilers.
We could start a separate thread for each episode. That doesn’t seem reasonable, but it would be possible.
IMO, there isn’t a need for separate threads because it is a small but hardy group that participates. Maybe a phrase in the thread title saying all episodes discussed/spoilers?
Firstly, my comment to gigi was intended to be more ironic than actually serious. I like the show, but a spoiler is not a disastrous event in my life. I watch it mainly to see the skills and creativity of the contestants.
Second, there are spoilers and there are spoilers. The show airs on Thursday night, but i usually watch it on Friday or Saturday, so i make a conscious effort to avoid the thread, and my subscription emails, between the initial air-date and my own viewing. I certainly don’t expect people to refrain from discussing the show just because i haven’t watched it yet.
But that’s not what happened here. In this case, we have people discussing spoilers for a future show, something i was not expecting at all. A “spoiler” disclaimer in the title wouldn’t have helped, because i would never have assumed that this means, “We’re going to discuss internet-based spoilers for episodes that have not even aired yet.”
As i said, though, it’s hardly the end of the world. This show isn’t that important to me.
The question of whether promos for the next episode count as a spoiler or not has long been debated ad nauseam by fans of various shows. In general, the consensus seems to be that a promo that runs at the end of the episode touting the following week should not be considered a spoiler on the part of the person referring to it, since most of us don’t snap off the TV the second the show is over.
Posting as a fan, not a mod:
Like mhendo, I stay out of the thread until I’ve watched the ep, whenever that is. I think that’s what most of us do, and I don’t think we need to make it more complicated than that.
As twickster mentioned, it depends if you consider the teaser for next week a part of the current show. I regret having watched it and really regret having mentioned it. I like to get a sense of the next challenge but more than that was too much.
To be honest, i think the show-runners themselves were fucking retarded for spoiling something like that in the previews.
I always turn the show off before the previews for the next episode begin. I do that with all shows i watch, whether competition shows like Project Runway and Top Chef, or dramas like Game of Thrones and Ray Donovan.
Again, I disagree with the winner but wholeheartedly agree with the loser. I was so sick of his whining about Sandiya intentionally sabotaging him. It’s all part of the competition and if he can’t deal with that he shouldn’t have been there. Also, if he had to choose who got which suit I’m pretty sure he would have given her the fugliest suit there … except she would have liked it.
She also probably would have done a better job with the fugliest suit than he did. As TLO pointed out, he whined about bad fabric and then the stupid ass picked even uglier fabric voluntarily. Goodbye and good riddance to him.
Pretty good show. Well, OK, I only payed attention to the runway portion, but I liked most of what I saw. Basically,
My favorites:
Char
fäde - I thought it was innovative.
Kini
Amanda - Looked kind of Egyptian.
Sean
My middle looks:
Emily
Alexander - The visible butt cheeks were pretty bad.
Sandyha - That’s the first look of hers that I’ve liked.
Samantha - Looked OK far away, saw a lot of flaws up close.
My least favorite looks:
Mitchel - Of the judges bottom three looks, I thought he should have stayed.
Korina - I thought she deserved to go home.
Kristine - I agree with her going home.
Kini should have won. I hated Amanda’s silly Egyptian look. My husband called Alexander’s look, “Cookie Monster Does Fringe.” Heh.
I am glad they sent those two home. This was a make a pretty dress challenge. They got a defined client and the right to choose their own fabric. People who go on the show should be prepared for this one along with the unexpected materials challenges. If you can’t make a halfway decent dress for Heidi in a day or so, this show is not for you.
I found it really interesting that those three would have been better off finishing what they started. OK, Heidi didn’t like it, they wouldn’t have won, but they wouldn’t have had unfinished crappy-looking stuff.
Sandya is the only one that really took advantage of the make-over, and she connived all the extra money. She made essentially the same dress, just used a different (spensive) fabric. The other three did a total remake, which just ain’t possible in five hours. Heidi hating a dress wouldn’t put it on bottom necessarily, the other judges might like it. But doing a total hack-job complete re-do, that was clearly disaster.
I sort of think they got more screwed by what was perceived as an opportunity.
I feel like they should have a had a couple of days. As Zac said, this kind of dress takes a long time; at least give them more of a chance. But yeah, “it’s not my thing” isn’t going to fly.
Poor Kini – twice in a row he makes something gorgeous and then gets beaten by fringe. At least this one was better than Amanda’s last week, but even thought the “haircut” and ombre were interesting, this silhouette and idea are not new.
I am relieved Sandhya was only safe, to not have to hear the bitching about her playing the game.
ETA: Forgot to say, I didn’t mind Sandhya’s first look, until she started dabbing green paint on it?! WTF? And I thought the bedsheet dress could have been dyed rather than a new dress made.
I think Korinna should’ve gone home as well as Mitchell. The other girl had a least done some interesting work in previous challenges.
I think Kimi should’ve done his design in a metallic color, the black was good enough for the red carpet but not good enough for a presenter. Wait, does Heidi do anything at this event? I guess I group her in with reporters and presenters. Anyway, it was a gorgeous dress, beautifully seamed but missing the WOW factor.
Fade’s was my favorite but it’s not something that Heidi would choose. He’s very consistent in his designs which will help him when he does his NY Fashion Week collection. I’m sure he makes it to the end, even if it’s a decoy collection, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be Top 3 nonetheless.
The winning dress, well it’s not Sean’s style is it? It shows that he can play the game though and give Heidi what she wants. It’s not something he would do normally.
I think Char should have been the winner or at least been in the top 3 ; the color was gorgeous and it had great movement.
Sean with the fringe; hmm Amanda won last week with fringe :smack: Of course I knew he was the winner thanks to facebook. (Only read this thread once a week after I watch the episode just in case there are spoilers.)
I do not understand all the love for Kini’s dress; the design has been done by many others designers even on PR.
One thing I will say about Kini; at least it fit his models bum. After this many weeks there is no excuse for Korina and Mitchell having bum fit issues.
How the judges decided to send home Kristine in place of Korina I do not understand.
Also Emily should have been in the bottom. She broke their rule of: if you have a low back or front the dress must be long.
So I have a question: Heidi says she is going to wear the winning design at whatever event. Is she going to win the exact thing the contestant made? Or is (someone) going to make a “production” copy in Heidi’s size? Because some of the dresses weren’t even hemmed. And they were all sized to other models (but maybe Heidi and all the models are the same size.)
I was happy enough with Sean’s win. I’m not generally a big fan of fringe, but i thought he did a really nice job with it, and i really love that shade of blue. I can’t believe how fast Kini is, and how well his stuff is put together. I would have been happy for him to win, if only for the obvious quality of the piece. I really didn’t understand the love for Amanda’s dress.
I really liked Fade’s look, but i knew that there was no way that it would make the top three. Char’s was OK, but nothing special; it deserved to be safe, but not to be in the top.
The bottom three were the right choice, although i think Emily was a bit lucky. That dress was incredibly short. I would have sent Korina home, but i’ll admit that’s partly because she annoys me so much. But even leaving that aside, her dress was no better than Kristine’s, and at least Kristine has shown some promise in earlier challenges. I think Kristine got screwed because a bad short dress often looks worse than a bad long dress.
I wish they’d spare me all the whining about Sandhya. Yes, she had a lots of money for the return to Mood. Yes, that’s because she was strategic about it. But Tim explicitly said that people who don’t go to Mood could give their money away, so she took some initiative and went asking for it. Also, it seems that she didn’t do it just for the sake of having more money, but because she had an idea about a specific fabric that she wanted but could not otherwise afford. I say good for her.
I also agree with Emily’s complaint, made during the episode, that allowing the designers to go back to Mood is unfair for the ones who got their fabric selection right the first time. Now, as Dex has already observed, this can be a double-edged sword, and some of them would have been better sticking with their original designs, but i still don’t really like it. I am glad, though, that the top three were all designers who stuck with their original materials.
There are two things I don’t understand about this season – why the judges love Amanda’s work, and why Fade isn’t kicking butt and taking names. I think his work is just stunning, and way more interesting than the same-old-same-old dresses some of the others are producing.
The bottom three all deserved to go home, and it was completely arbitrary which of the three it was. I could argue that it should have been Korina, for going back and getting more green when the main thing Heidi hated about the first one was the color. Way to listen to your client, moron!
I think Dex’s analysis is spot on – the “you can go back to Mood” offer was a complete poison pill: sure, they could start over, but they also had less than half the time left. (Did Fade go back? If so, it was only to get more of the fabric he was working with to add a train to the same garment.)
And I don’t have a problem with Sandhya listening carefully to what Tim said and availing herself of the offer. A little Wendy Pepperish – but it is a game, and there are strategic moves to be made from time to time, and this was a good time to make one.
When I first saw the photo of the winning dress on Heidi, I thought the fringe was gradations of blue. Since Sean only used two colors, blue and black, I figured he or someone else had duplicated the idea later, using better materials and better sewing. But no, it is the exact same dress–the layers are still choppy.
So maybe a crucial judging decision was, is it wearable as it is AND can Heidi fit into it? Because she is slender but, after x number of kids, not teen model slender anymore. Maybe wearing Kini’s very fitted gown was not going to happen.
