Project Runway 13

Interesting episode. I felt a little bad for those models though. I’m glad Kini won a challenge, although it doesn’t quite mean as much having to share it with Sean.

I’ll share my opinions and place the looks how I would have ranked them. I know I’ll probably be the only one who would rank them this way, especially Sean.

My choices for top 3 were:
**Kini **- I loved it and I’m glad he won.
Char - I thought it was creative.
Amanda - I liked it.

My choices for safe were:
Emily - Looked like a mix of dominatrix and tin woodsman.
Alexander - I didn’t know what to make of this look.
Fade - The lipstick was bad and the makup made the model look like a man. As for the dress, I thought it was OK. Although when they were dong the closeup exam I did see the pajama look the judges were criticizing about it. Given his past looks, I wish he would have stayed.

My choices for bottom 3:
Sandhya - Clown costume.
Korena - Looked very 80’s to me, and the… whatever you call it that was supposed to make thunder sounds just failed miserably.
Sean - OK, first off, bravo for the trick working. Having said that, I don’t think it transformed the dress into anything special. And it’s a neat trick, but you can only do it once. Sorry, but it just didn’t wow me like it did the judges.

Kiss my ass judges. Fade did not deserve to go. I loved his designs. And I love Sandyha. I hope she makes the finale. Kini’s and Sean’s were both good.

Sandhya is probably the worst designer I’ve seen on this show. Her clothes *never *look well made. Tonight she made a clown suit and hung some pinwheels off it. There’s avant garde and then there is just fugly badly made crap.

She’s also a bitch who likes to play the victim.

Can I mention that I also hate her voice without it sounding racist? I don’t think it has anything to do with the Indian accent but the whine and monotone, and I am from the same state that she lives in if that helps.

I thought Kenny was more creative than Sean, and probably understand why they split the prize. When you consider how many hundreds of models in dresses the judges have seen, ANYTHING that is new probably stands out.

Yeah, she was really whining about wanting someone to show some compassion in the preview for next week’s ep.

I think the judges lost track of what “avant garde” is supposed to mean when they didn’t rank her in the bottom three.

It will be an American Girl doll challenge and the beginnings of Sandhya’s outfit look really babydoll/weird colors/child for an adult woman. But we have seen the judges look at things I thought were “infantilizing” on a grown woman and think they were sporty and young. So it’s anyone’s guess!

Also, from this week’s ep – Amanda was taken aback by Sandhya’s comment that she doesn’t want to be compared to other designers, that it was an insensitive remark since the others had had Alexander McQueen mentioned about their looks. But on the runway, they had said how they know it’s Sandhya’s look, and she was pleased to have a signature. I didn’t see how it was so insensitive of her?

I cannot stand Amanda, to the point that she is ruining my enjoyment of the show. Something about her attitude and delivery seems extremely contrived to me. IMO, her eyeball dress was atrocious. Every week I keep hoping she will be eliminated, but I’ve got a creepy feeling she may end up the winner, probably a settlement from some secret law suit against the show that we know nothing about.

Sorry, I tend to go off the deep end about her.

I’m thinking Kini will win. At least I hope he will. I’ve been rooting for him the last few episodes.

I don’t know if Sean’s was avant-garde. It was a dress that changed colors. To me that is gimmicky. There was no design to his garment. It was a white sundress. I loved that Kini’s looked like an umbrella, but wish it didn’t look so dominatrix. I can’t really comment on others because we see so little on the runway. About 2 seconds per look. I will say that Emily is a one-note–everything is black with a hood.

And Tim Gunn? You really screwed up with your save.

Actually, Sean’s dress was the very definition of avant-garde, even if the dress itself was blah. The surprise color change is what sealed the deal. Everyone else designed in 3D, his was a four dimensions design.

We’re rooting for Kini as well. I just about gasped when they said he made the sleeves. Or do you call them shoulder-length gloves? Either way, making gloves that fit and look amazing in such a short time along with making everything else is a triumph of technique.

Utterly agreed on the waste of the TG save.

I thought it was somehow steam punk Mary Poppins dominatrix, an odd mash-up. Needed a bustle.

I thought it came off as kind of tone-deaf when the bottom three came back in upset by being dinged by the judges for being “derivative” and then she comes back smugly with, “Well, MY goal is to never be compared to anyone else. And I haven’t been.”

What bothered me most about the show: Fade has always been shown being the one that lets others vent when they need to. He always says “Anytime you need someone to listen, I’m here”. Well Fade seemed to be really upset this episode, and no one stepped in to comfort him.

I know that could just be editing, but it broke my heart that not one of those ingrates could reciprocate when Fade was in need.

More comments:

If Sandhya’s pinwheels had actually worked, they would have been cool. As duds, they were just stupid.

Kini’s design was super cool. It looked like a villain – Umbrella Woman – from a Chanel comic book. I could imagine something like that in a Chanel perfume commercial, too.

That’s a good point. Amanda said as an aside that she thought his work was cool but she wasn’t taking time out to really help him or at least listen. I’m such a sympathetic crier too – hearing him say goodbye on the phone was hard.

Sean’s win was so well deserved, not because the white dress was interesting or well done, but because it used the environment and an unexpected element in a surprising, transformative way. And he did the thing that is most important on the Runway - he surprised the judges. Nina was not bored. That said it was a smidge McQueen… think of Spray Paint dress. Same concept, different material.

Kini equally deserved the win, because that dress was so editorial. Again totally pandering to Nina but you can just see that umbrella dress on a photo shoot. And it takes the idea of rain and plays with it in an unexpected way. Boring would have been an open umbrella bell-shaped-skirt thing. New and exciting is the folded umbrella skirt. (Though I did flash back a bit to that one girl who won with the waves. Remember?)

Sandhya’s ideas are cray, maybe in an interesting way but why has Nina not called her out on taste and editing? I don’t get it. And her execution sucks. And she’s not a nice person.

Tim’s save should have gone to Fade not Whatsherbutt with the earrings. Though Fade somehow except for this challenge made pretty, wearable dresses that didn’t stand out to the judges in any way. He really was doomed from the start.

Back to Sean. Took him a couple of challenges but he sure knows how to play the game at this point.

THANK YOU! I was trying to remember who had won and yes, the skirts with waves.

Leanne. Has a wedding gown line now.

I liked Leanne.

OTOH, I hate just about everyone this season except Fade, who clearly ran out of steam, dammit. Wish Tim had saved his save for someone who was a good designer, not just someone he liked.

And the product placement is getting completely fucking out of hand – the Samsung Avant Garde Challenge? And Kini and Fade oohing and ahing over the refrigerator?

They really are doing their damnedest to make this show unwatchable.

Oh, and I do like Sean, and am rooting for him. I liked the dress – the point, as several people said, with an avant-garde challenge is not to do something wearable, but something you’ve never seen before. That qualified.

I thought the worst was a couple of seasons ago when they had to hand out Yoplait frozen yogurt samples to people, get the people to describe the yogurt, and then make dresses based on the descriptions.
