Chris got the hair where anybody getting a weave gets it. And according to this interview in EW, he’s doing just fine.
She was. The West Bank was part of Jordan until the '67 war.
Michael Kors, in all honesty. Kors’s palette was a whole lot stronger. Donna Karan’s is all variations on beige – blech. I also think that Kors’s collection would look better on me personally, being short and curvy, than Karan’s, which depends much more on a fashion model figure. I’m already thinking about whether or not a belted sweater and pencil skirt would be a good choice.
Mama Tiger, I love those big plaid coats! A giant fur collar would be so nice in Wisconsin right about now. I’d put that thing on in November and not take it off until April.
I’ve been thinking about the human hair usage for a couple days now. It’s kind of intriguing to see people’s reactions to it, and I wonder why it’s creepy to so many.
The theory I have now, is that human hair off someone’s head (so not used in a wig or weave) is considered a contaminant: we hate to get it in our food, wipe it off our counter tops, use lint brushes to get it off our clothes, etc. So we categorize it as something “dirty” in the same way many people won’t eat chocolate shaped like dog feces or drink a glass of water after a sterilized cockroach has been dipped into it.
I think Chris had a very interesting concept of “dark beauty”. Taking unconventional materials like human hair (often thought of as creepy) and safety pins (thought of as mundane or punky depending on your frame of reference) and making them into something truly beautiful is a very intriguing idea. His dark colors and strong make up made me think of the silent movie era more than it made me think “goth” (though that may be my age showing).
However, maybe he tried to do too much. The judges seemed overwhelmed with the hair and the dark looks. It’s like they lost the beauty of what he did in all their shock at the look and the materials. Which is a shame because at least what he did wasn’t boring.
Rami, on the other hand, showed nice clothes with one very pretty dress (the black and white one). But, to me, they were boring. There was nothing challenging about what he showed us.
Perhaps the judges thought that would make him a good mix for the final three. Rami seems like he’d show a pretty acceptable, but not challenging line. Christian’s will likely be quite original and conceptual. He has some interesting ideas, but many of his clothes aren’t wearable for more than a few. Jillian is sort of in the middle. Her clothes are wearable but often have a bit of an edge. You don’t see them other places.
I wonder why his Palestinian-ness was not mentioned on the show at all. They said he was from Jerusalem, his mother was Miss Jordan, and showed him prominently wearing a cross around his neck. I may be mistaken, but the word “Palestinian” was never uttered. Strange.
I have to say, Rami seems like he drinks his own bathwater-- rather stuck on himself. I could be wrong, he might be wonderfully nice and down to earth, though I think, next to Chris, he is bound to come off as cool and aloof.
That said, I agree with the assessment that Rami’s clothes were boring. Chris’, while maybe a bit weird and Sweeney Todd-ish, were much more thrilling and intriguing. I wanted to see the whole collection. Rami’s, not so much. The epithet “costumey” seemed like a lame reason to auf Chris… since Christian is also very overdone and poufy.
Any predictions for the win? Currently, I’m rooting for Christian. Mostly because he’s given me the most laughs and oooohs this season. Yes, he’s an arrogant little monster, but I think that’s mostly a send-up anyway. And his clothes are a lot of fun to look at. Would I wear them? No, but who wears couture anyway? The 10 people in the world who can afford it. To me, it’s art in the shape of clothing (which is probably why I liked Chris’ clothes more than Rami-- all depends on your POV).
Also, a note on the human hair-- do people think it’s gross when other people wear human hair wigs and extensions? When my mom had cancer, she had a human hair wig. I didn’t find it repulsive at all.
I think the creepiness factor is that it’s human hair and as Maddy stated we look at it like a contaminant. Suppose you were wearing that outfit and some of the hair fell off in your food? Also, you start to get creepy thoughts like “where did he get it from?” and your mind just goes to the creepy places first (like rolling bums in alleys or keeping women locked up in your basement and harvesting their hair).
That said I think it looked great but I don’t think he should have picked 2 hair outfits for his 3, especially after Tim’s comment. The one suit would have been enough to show his edginess and creativity and then choose another one of his dresses, like this one to round out his 3. If he had done that I think he’d be in the final.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but it does grow out of your head. People get it cut every day and throw it away. IMO, it’s much less gross than wearing a skinned animal, at which, let’s face it, a lot of people in the fashion world not would bat an eye.
Again, without trying to be argumentative here… he bought the hair. Probably from a similar place that my mom bought hers, or all those celebrities with human hair extensions bought theirs. He just used it for clothes instead of having it glued or weaved onto his own head.
Agreed here.
But not here… because I think the judges wanted Rami and they got him.
Not trying to be argumentative either but I wasn’t the one having the extreme reactions, I was only agreeing that some people have those immediate reactions of “eww, hair!” and don’t get over them. I did but then I got over it fairly quickly. I’m not saying that Chris did anything nefarious to get the hair but that many people tend to think the worst first about where one acquires human body parts and that’s where some of the creepiness factor comes in.
I think it looks great, it’s very creative but that said I wouldn’t really want to wear it myself. But mostly because I don’t wear high fashion and it seems like it would be high maintenance. I can’t do high maintenance clothes. If I did/could wear high fashion I’d choose that blue dress I linked.
It very may well be that they wanted Rami and they’d use any excuse to get him but if Chris had toned down the weird in his 3 dresses he might have had a better chance of being picked and had they still not picked him the fans would have a lot more fuel for crying foul.
A hair in food is creepy because it came out of a follicle. It’s a contaminate because it has human bacteria. But wig hair and hair weave hair are clean. It would be no different from a silk thread.
But it is* sexy * librarian!
I completely agree. To me, it’s no different from using wool. However, some people find the idea of clothing made of human hair to be repulsive, and I’m curious as to why that is.
I’ve just finished reading Sthephen Pinker’s “How the Mind Works”, and in it he mentioned people often won’t consume things that are usually associated with contamination–even when they know they’re clean (e.g. they won’t eat soup served in a brand new bed pan or drink lemonade out of a brand new urine specimen cup). I thought maybe something similar was going on for the people who found human hair clothing to be creepy.
I guess I found it somewhat disconcerting that people as ostensibly sophisticated and worldly in the fashion industry as Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia, and Michael Kors would have this reaction. Surely they’ve seen weirder, grosser materials used to good effect and haven’t had such openly prudish reactions. It seems like such a provincial response to something that’s only unconventional at first glance. I can understand a “whoa” or “wow” or even “weird!” but not “my gag reflex is kicking in.” I mean, really, Tim, I love ya but, come ON. You’ve got to be kidding me.
However, I read somewhere that Chris told him that he initially wanted to use monkey hair, which you cannot get, so he went for human hair instead. That’s even weirder, but as long as it was harvested without harming monkeys, eh. Only different from wool or silk (worm spew!) in people’s imaginations. In fact, it’s less gross than those fabrics because human hair is, presumably, obtained from willing donors or sellers.
I too do not wear high fashion, but if I did, I’d wear Chris’ stuff. I think he’ll get a lot of niche business out of this.
I agree with you. But the fans crying foul is nothing new for PRW… after all, Jeffrey won last season. I’m still not over that. Sometimes the judges’ decisions are totally WTF to me.
I’m rooting for Jillian.
I was shocked at what Ramie chose to show to the judges because I saw his collection online first before the episode. IMO those were not even close to his three strongest looks.
I liked Chris a lot but there’s no way in hell he was going to win with Nina and Kors judging.
I was rooting for Chris, but he made a major tactical error by putting human hair on his garments, especially after Tim warned him that he “could not smell the monkey house.” He took a risk and he lost.
I found the use of the hair creepy. It is a matter of context and socialization. Human hair on top of someone’s head as adornment: OK. Fairly common practice in western culture (the one I am most familiar with), has been for a long time. Human hair belonging to someone else other than the wearer coming out of the end of their sleeve or around their waist as adornment: weird and somewhat creepy.
It was unexpected, yes, but it was not pleasant. The first image that popped into my head when I saw hair on the pieces: I thought of stories of serial killers and nazi prison guards who used pieces of their victims to create things that they thought were beautiful. Yes, I know that I am not being logical or fair, but I am talking about my immediate and visceral reaction- I just don’t like looking at clothes that have someone else’s human body parts on it! Yuck!
