Michael C. is the grecian dress, right? I feel like he won for following directions, ie, make a dress that works with the hat (and makes the hat and the model look good). He and Michael D got very similar praise, they both got the words “complementary” and props for their fabric choices , but with M. C. it was a bit heavier on how well his fabric went with the hat. And they mentioned the iridescence of the hat that was picked up by the fabric, and I don’t see that at all in the hat, so yeah I think you’re right about translating to TV.
I think with Christopher his jacket looked really great in the workroom, as a single piece before it was paired with the leggings, and that’s where the designers saw it and why they liked it so much. But the judges saw it for the first time with the leggings, and that little matching skirt peeking out, and as a whole package it wasn’t working.
Does this season’s group seem way WAY bitchier than prior seasons? Everyone is dissing everyone else. Maybe it’s just the editing is more focused on that? I dunno, I find it off-putting to hear the negative comments about each other. Makes me dislike the person who’s saying it.
I’m guessing that’s just a function of the longer running time. I like the time and don’t really mind the bitchiness so much, when it feels justified. I agreed with the ones who didn’t think Michael’s second attempt was really a first-place look. And the diaper-panties were hideous.
I still feel like I’m getting only flashes of the clothing, which is irritating as all get out. All this extra time, and the runway is still being edited down to nothing. In two cases, even by going frame-by-frame on the DVR I still couldn’t get a looka t the hat and dress as a unit. who the frack is running that camera?!?
I liked April, and hated to see her go, but I wouldn’t have worn that dress to a $10 prom. I mean, has she never seen a Georgia O’Keefe painting? A water-color green silk would have set that hat off beautifully.
But I have to say it’s clear I know nothing about fashion. I definitely though Christopher had it in the bag. His outfit was perfect, I though. He was the only one who made the hat look accessible; I could easily imagine that ensemble walking into the Russian Tea Room.
I was amazed that nobody went for a “Kentucky Derby” look. Most of those hats simply couldn’t go anywhere else.
Speaking of the TV translating, I could have sworn that Christopher’s leggings and skirt were lavender, which I loved. And I loved the fabric of the coat, so I guess I have no taste. I could only see the iridescence of the orangey hat in one shot, so I guess you had to watch closely.
And here I was thinking that they’re more helpful to each other than previous groups. During the models walking down the runway the designers were giving words of encouragement to each other. In the workroom there were negative comments, but then, there always are.
I really don’t understand the hate for the hats. The hats were gorgeous and more art than everyday fashion. No, you wouldn’t expect to see those hats on Jane Schmoe walking down the street, but visually they are striking and amazing. In photoshoots, hats like that are breathtaking.
I liked Chris’ coat/jacket/thing a lot, but his styling ruined it. The boots were far too heavy and stumpy and the monochromatic shiny leggings and tunic did make it look dreary. If he had paired the coat with a nice black skinny pant and heel (AND NOT THAT BELT), it would’ve been great.
I luuurve Valerie but I cannot believe that dress was in the top 3. It wasn’t even that great of a dress regardless; I figured she was going to be in the bottom.
It cracked me up that Casanova snarked that Michael C’s dress is something “every Puerto Rican woman has in her closet”… and then made a black dress that I’ve seen in tons of closets of women 40+.
Whether the hats looked good or not is a matter of opinion. And in my opinion they looked ridiculous. And let’s face it, one of those wasn’t a hat. It was a 1960’s style mask.
Agreed. And I think some people’s opinion on the hats are based on their view of high fashion.
If you consider haute couture an art that inspires more of the ready to wear stuff, then you can might see the hats as sort of an inspiration to a designer (or fashion lover) to create or wear muted but related versions of the hats.
If you consider runway fashion as something that should be ready to wear already, then I can see why one would think those hats ridiculous. One would need the presence of Grace Jones to pull it off.
