Project Runway 8/23: Mommy Dearest

I can’t believe how rude some of those people were about designing for, gasp, larger women! I mean, imagine that! Robert and The Neck were real tools about it. I liked Kayne’s outfit, myself, but I guess I’m in the minority on that one. I thought Uli deserved the win - she had a harder challenge than, say, Michael, and she made the lady look wonderful.

I dearly, dearly hope that Tim is going to be one of the judges for next week’s episode. That would be so fabulous. Perhaps he could be the jet-setter? I know he probably isn’t, but that would rule. They’re dressing Tim AND he gets to judge them!

I don’t particularly like Jeffrey, but I’m sure the producers did some editing to make him look as bad as possible (like with Laura at the end of last week’s show).

Robert had to go after his third “boring” from the judges. I would guess that boring is even worse than ugly for a designer.

I didn’t think Vincent’s dress was that great. Uli should have won.

This was the best thing Laura’s said this season – I thought it was pretty funny.

Jeffrey sickened me. I can’t believe how rotten he was. His mother must have whispered in his ear what an asshole he was, he cried and played the addict card. He should have been thrown off for that hideous Darth Vader costume he made Angela’s mother.

To be fair, they are young. And I’m sure it was hard to design plus sized clothes for older women. I really thought Kaynes would be better.

I have a feeling he’ll be voted off next week.

I thought Laura’s comment was pretty funny. It showed that she has a bit of a sense of humor. Her mother looked horrified when she found out Laura was pregnant. Wonder why?

I’m sure Jeffrey would love for people to think that he’s so young that he can make social mistakes based on inexperience, but that peanut-headed pissant is 36 years old.

I didn’t love any of the outfits this week.

Vincent’s dress was definitely the best thing he’s put out there so far (though that isn’t saying much) and I liked the idea, but it did look bunchy around the middle.

Count me in the minority that didn’t like Uli’s outfit. Hiding a big woman in a poncho? It’s been done. For both winter and summer, two years ago. Yes, Uli does a great job with prints. Maybe she should work in textiles. But the pants were basic and the poncho idea was stale. Sorry to disagree with you, Tim, but I don’t think this should have won.

I liked Michael’s the best, but of course, it was no challenge to design for slim little Theresa. Still, I’m amazed he pulled off a fully reversible dress in a single day. I thought he’d run into serious issues and have to scrap that plan, but I guess not. Kudos to Michael for his sewing chops. My only quibble: what was with the big loop on the front of the belt?

Honestly, Jeffrey should have won last week, and then Michael could have won this week without running into the problem of three wins in a row.

Jeffrey’s outfit was terrible: Dowdy and bizarre. It was like he took the worst aspects of both his and his model’s styles and combined them.

Stll, I knew it was Robert who was going to go. He’s been playing it safe for too long. This elimination was the result of a cumulative judgment. His first outfit, with the red and white, was so cute and innovative that I had high hopes for him. On the second challenge, he was subordinate to Kayne, so that didn’t count. His outfit for the dog challenge was very cute and Jackie O. Ironically, when he was designing for Jackie O., it was awful, baggy, and matronly. His three-piece Macy’s outfit was incredibly blah and old-looking. The mylar cocktail dress last week was a good effort that had revival potential, but he killed it with this week’s bulk-highlighting monstrosity. He joked about zebra stripes; that might have been an improvement, making her torso something other than negative space. I just hope he keeps designing and doesn’t think of himself as someone who can only do boring clothes from here on out.

Kayne’s was uninteresting, and the scarf was odd, but I don’t think it was bottom-of-the-heap.

Laura’s was also dull, and the waist was far too high, but the sailor skirt was cute. If she’d paired it with a more fun, relaxed, brightly printed top, it would have been much better and more cruise-ish.

Honestly, I thought Angela’s outfit, which turned a slim lady into a baggy, aging, flapper-in-mourning, was the worst of the night. But she’s had some good moments recently, and like I said, Robert was due. Angela caught a break this week. I hope she goes soon.

By the way, when it comes to Jeffrey’s behavior, I’m ambivalent. When he chose (or, actually, got stuck with) Angela’s mother, he said the her, “You’ll have fun,” even though he really didn’t want to work with her. He was trying to make her feel better about being chosen last. He bought the purple even though it wasn’t his style. He tried to explain the logistics: “I can’t make a tailored jacket in a day.” She refused to accept that simple fact.

Then, of course, he got frustrated, because for Jeffrey, that was all incredibly over-the-top nice. He acted like a complete, unmitigated jerk. She got very shaken and cried, true to Kesslar form. As my brother said, “How do you get through life if you’re crying over someone making you a free outfit?”

Yes, Jeffrey was terribly mean, and being honest is not license to insult people. I don’t care how annoying she is; you can’t banish your client. But Darlene was difficult to deal with as well, and Angela was no help.

Looking at it from Darlene’s perspective, of course, she’s excited and anticipating an amazing time on this amazing show. And so what happens? She gets picked last, and then the designer she’s working with not only dismisses her ideas, but doesn’t even go with colors she likes. And then this complate stranger is openly rude and nasty to her, on national television, no less. I can’t imagine how crushing it must have felt for her to have what was supposed to be a great time turned into a really painful experience. And then to have the jerk’s mother trying to excuse his behavior? Ridiculous.

So yes, Darlene and Angela do probably come from Passive-Aggressive Land, but nevertheless I can certainly see why Darlene would be so upset.

It would have been better if the challenge was just straight-up “design for plus size”, with larger models brought in. Instead, some designers had it way easier than others. Whoever got Robert’s sister could just design normally, compared to some of the others.

So can I; I just don’t think that we can blame the ENTIRE incident on Jeffrey’s being a massive nastyneck, though, of course, he is.

By the way, not only Robert and Jeffrey expressed concern about designing for a heavier woman. So did Uli, though she was more diplomatic, explaining that she has no experience designing for a “fuller woman.”

Sorry; I didn’t preview. That was a response to Mama Tiger’s post.

After listening to Tim’s podcast and hearing that Jeffrey made his dress form look like a hippopatomus I hope he goes as soon as possible. What a creep!

I thought most of the designs were meh this week. Angela’s fringe was ludicrous. Kayne’s was nothing special. Laura’s was badly tailored. Vincent’s wasn’t anything you can’t see at Macy’s. Michael’s outfit would have worked better IMO without the waist tie. I liked Uli’s the best. The print over the pink shirt was very flattering. Robert wasn’t half bad but like Zahava pointed out this was a cumulative judgement. Personally I thought he should have been out after his Jackie O. horror.

Interestingly, several larger women I know are appalled with all the outfits for the plus size ladies, including Uli’s, which I thought was very attractive – they complain that people who don’t know how to design for plus sizes always put them in floaty things, when fitted are much more flattering.

And yes, Zahava424, it does take two to tango, but in this case I thought Jeffrey bore about 90% of the responsibility for their disagreement. He really went out of his way to be a complete asshole. And even though I listened to Tim’s podcast yesterday, I’d completely forgotten about the hippopotamus dress form – that alone should have gotten Jeffrey kicked off for utter insensitivity to his client’s feelings!

The issue with Jeffery has been hashed out quite extensively in this thread. But let me come at it from what I think is a bit of a different angle.

First, I completely agree he was an asshole. But he shouldn’t have gotten kicked off last night. The judges are there to judge, not to mediate or even bear witness to all the bullshit that happens behind the scenes. They’re rating the finished product as it comes down the runway. Jeffrey’s was NOT the worst outfit that went down yesterday. I really don’t know if Robert’s was either but it ranked pretty far down the ladder. He’d been given not one, but two reprieves, and still couldn’t take the hint that he had to be daring. Either he was too scared to try, or too incapable to accomplish. Either way, it was his time to go and not Jeffrey’s.

Secondly, Project Runway isn’t about winning! It really isn’t. This isn’t Survivor where first place gets his or her million dollars and 15 minutes of fame. This is their livelihood and Project Runway gives these designers anywhere from 1 week to 4 months of free advertising. Prospective customers and employers see each designer basically say “This is what I can create. This is my imagination. This is how well I work under time pressure. This is how I relate to you, the customer. This is how good a team player I am.” and on and on.

No matter how far Jeffrey gets in this competition, he’s already failed. He’s shown he can’t work well in teams and he’s shown he can’t work well with the customer. You CANNOT berate your client, completely ignore her suggestions for what HER outfit should be, and refuse to apologize when she starts to break down in tears. Wrong or not (and he was) he needs to suck it up and apologize. If not, she’ll take her business elsewhere. I dare say most people will be taking their business elsewhere after seeing Wednesday’s show.

He didn’t get kicked off on Wednesday, but Jeffrey might as well be off the show

I do disagree with one point, Enderw24 – I do believe Jeffrey’s outfit was the worst one up there. Angela’s ran a close second, and Robert’s was only slightly better. They were all bad, but IMO Jeffrey’s was the worst – it looked like a deconstructed sack, made her look absolutely ghastly. And then, of course, the way he’d treated her gave her zero incentive to at least try to work it on the runway, so she schlumped down. The only one who schlumped worse was Vincent’s sister, but I don’t think that was because she didn’t like the outfit, I think it was because she’s a weird woman who acted depressed the whole show. (And who wouldn’t be depressed, having Vincent for a brother? ) Even Laura’s mom strutted the hell out of that fringed monstrosity Angela put her in, which really increased my respect for her (that was already high, based on my enjoyment of her look of horror at hearing about grandchild #6).

But otherwise, I totally agree. Jeffrey has really shot himself in the foot career-wise. (As did Keith earlier this season, with his blatant rule-breaking.) Who wants to work with someone you can’t trust to even listen to you or to treat you courteously, when you’re paying them to do something for you?

I thought that Vincent’s sister looked more upset than anyone coming down the runway, and then she claimed to love the outfit. Maybe she was trying to do a model’s pout?

I haven’t seen the episode yet and I can’t ever resist spoilers. Anyway, I just wanted to comment on the above statement. Angela was once in the bottom two solely based on the judges perception that she did not work well in her team. They may or may not have seen the behind the scenes stuff but they seemed to base this on comments made by Vincent and Angela on the runway. Still that had nothing to do with the outfit itself and that is what they should have been judging, right?

Jeffery’s outfit didn’t fit! As bad as the others were, that would have been the deciding factor for me.

As for how he treated Angela’s mother. First of all, I now know why Angela is as spacy as she is. Second of all, Jeffery is the designer. He wants to put some f*#%ing periwinkle on it, stop complaining. Maybe he has some ideas of what would make you look nice color wise beyond a dress in all dark purple or dark green. Third, remember that Jeffery has issues with Angela already due to her breaking the sewing machines then walking away (“It’s not my fault!”). I think it is that frustration that came out.

Well, yeah, she was spacy, but he was very nasty to her. I think he went into it with a crap attitude. He tried to make nice for like, 5 seconds, and then gave up and banished her from his area. That would have upset me too.

I agree with you in principle, and there were ways to express that which would have been positive, kind, and constructive. He didn’t bother to try any of those ways.

Didn’t some say that Tim mentioned that it wasn’t actually Angela who broke the sewing machine? Or did I imagine that?

According to this EW interview with Robert she has arthritis, and was in quite a bit of pain walking down the runway.

After reading that, and from Tim Gunn’s comments on the Bravo site, I’m thinking that Robert wasn’t so much doomed by the fact that Vincent’s sister was full-figured, but that she was completely inflexible in what she’d wear. Tim seems to think that she’d have refused to walk down the runway if Robert didn’t follow her dictates, so he had little chance to follow Heidi’s dictates when his model was insisting on boring.

I’m curious, though: the posters with their claws out because Robert was having difficulty working with a plus-size model, what’s your opinion of Michael – whose own mother is not svelte, yet who immediately chose the slimmest woman standing up there?
