I’m usually not so critical, but this is an all-star edition and I’ve been expecting a lot better than what I’ve been seeing in all the challenges.
Their top gowns were kind of insane except Dimitris. I can’t believe they let that one dress - the Raw one (anyone know the name of the designer? I don’t) go…the model couldn’t walk in it because the length was so wrong. And yet is ends up on top? Whatever.
The whole thing was disappointing.
I was happy, because I loves Sonjia’s dress. But I still think it’s absurd to only have 2 days for a coture challenge. Maybe if it was final four and they each had helpers or something, but not for 12 people.
Well, it’s certainly been well established at this point that they use the word “couture” to mean something other than actual couture. They should just call it the “fancy gown” challenge or something.
On the plus side, this is the first show this season where I liked a lot of the looks. On the minus side, I really didn’t see any stories in the dresses. And the explanations… One or two worked.
I disagree with Helen winning. I personally didn’t care for her dress. I thought that Sonji’s dress was better. And I thought that Gunner should have gone home. Kate’s was bad, but his was worse. The dress was all wrinkly, and then, what the hell was that in the back?
Sonji’s dress was complete WTF to me – it still looked mother of the bride, even with the cobalt underneath. I couldn’t believe they seriously thought it was top two. Of course, I also didn’t like Helen’s dress, which just looked droopy to me.
Actually, there wasn’t a single dress I really liked in the bunch. Jay’s was okay, other than the handkerchief skirt.
And I couldn’t believe they didn’t send Gunnar home for what can only be described as a hot mess.
Samantha’s dress should have been bottom three – worse than Kate’s.
Thanks twickster for that link; I didn’t know it was available. We hadn’t see the last few episodes so I’m surprised there are still eleven designers left.
Another good thing about that link is the final designs show still pictures. I never had to chance to realize how really unattractive the models are - there’s not a single one of them that would attract my attention on the street.
I agree with you on all counts. I didn’t see anything groundbreaking about Helen’s dress and almost think she’s done something like it before. Kate and Gunnar both should have gone home, but I guess unfinished hem is worse that unattractive hideous finished look. Although, they could have turned around and called Kate’s “raw”!
“I need a whole other language because there are no words to describe how incredible your design is.” It was a nice coat, but whoa, that’s hyperbole to the infinity power.
I don’t feel bad for Benjamin – pick the fabric you want and don’t blame it on someone else. Or being jet-lagged – so is everyone. Those pockets – yikes!
Benjamin was being set up with the loser-edit right from the start. “I used to live in London!”
What actually impressed me is there wasn’t anyone with major construction problems this time. Everyone sent a fully finished look down the runway, no ragged hems or anything. Why is outerwear easier than a simple shift dress…I don’t get it.
Finally - Fergie is really slumming is she’s fallen to Project Runway All Stars.
I was trying to figure out why it was cheaper to send eight designers + Portia + production crew + etc. to London for 24 hours than it was to bring Fergie to NYC for a week.
So for tonight I’m glad that Fabio didn’t go home because I liked his dress. I honestly think that Gunnar shouldn’t have gone home either. I didn’t think his dress was great, but I thought he should have been safe. I personally didn’t like Michelle’s green dress and wouldn’t have minded if she went home for that.
I don’t really see Alyssa Milano wearing that gold dress, but more power to her if she can pull it off! I did feel bad so many people got brocade. I wasn’t quite sure what I thought of Michelle’s other than that it was a lot more creative than Sonji’s. “Las Vegas cocktail waitress” isn’t exactly a compliment.
So for the first, and probably only, time I paid a lot of attention to this episode. This was a product placement I didn’t mind because it went well with fashion. Trying to look good on a first date.
As for the looks themselves, I thought Jay and Fabio were the best team, and individually I liked Jay and Justin. I thought Samantha and Michelle was the worse team, and individually I disliked thought Samantha and Helen’s looks. I thought everyone else was meh or safe.
The judges hated Justin and said his look was too plain and ordinary. But to be honest, ordinary and good (I didn’t see the fit issues the judges saw) beats unique and bad.
Good God, what are these judges smoking? The gay couple hit it off so well because they could bond over how doofy their clothes were. All lilac too girly – oh yeah, a heather gray sleeve will solve that!
I guess they were the best of a bad group – but “I’m reminded of scrubs…in a good way!”?? Again the Fabio love – I don’t get it. He is not revolutionizing fashion!
Overall, these “all-stars” have been pretty meh. I do think they should give them more time. One day isn’t realistic even for a contest challenge.
That was the single most bizarre win of the season.
Skipping the bathing suit ep, tonight’s left me as befuddled as ever.
Zanna is the senior editor of a fashion magazine and her styling leaves something to be desired.
Helen, inspired by the shark, makes a completely unsharklike dress with the same “tripe” they hated when Betsey Johnson was there, and they love it??!!? I swear they are just effing with us.
I am probably the only one still watching this thing! But I cannot look away!
I’m still watching it but only for the entertainment factor. Helen’s dress was a blob of nothing, with ruffles. Dimitry has done a variation of his winning coat many times, including his runway final that got him the win. I liked Jay’s and Sonjie’s and was hoping Michelle would be sent home.
Face it, nothing tops the avant garde challenge of Season 4 with Chris and Christian’s 40 yards of organza extravagance, and Jillian and Victorya’s gorgeous black and plaid coat. I still lust after that coat.
Yeah, I couldn’t believe no one – other than another contestant – commented on the recycling of Dmitri’s shtick. Do they not watch other seasons? Or at least see a summary of what they’ve already done?
(I assume everyone’s seen Isaac on whether the moon is a star or a planet? Love the man, but not a mental giant.)
I keep watching because I’m trying to identify what it is about Alyssa’s styling that screams '50s housewife to me – is it just me, or has she identified the least attractive look possible for a pregnant woman?
I wholeheartedly agree with the Alyssa thing. There was one time they put her in a beehive hairdo! She could not look more frumpy if they put her in actual frumpy clothes.
This cycle has been completely meh for me. I haven’t seen any designs I’ve liked and all the contestants seem boring. I might quit watching. I miss Tim Gunn.
