Well, sounds like I’m not going to own Modern Warfare 2 unless I get it free with a video card or something. Why even do that? It’s such a stupid business decision.
The most amusing part of the current NO DEDICATED FOR YOU trend is that it probably ups the number of pirates who download a game just for the singleplayer since the mplayer will be balls.
The thing that pisses me off too is that they do this fucking stupid shit when handling the PC versions of games, and then they say “huh, weird, the PC version didn’t sell that well, I guess we can half-ass it even more in the future” and it’s a negative spiral of retardation that’s all their fault.
There’s a petition that has gathered 110k signatures in less than 2 days. This is one instance where an online petition is actually meaningful, since there’s a good chance the people who sign it are part of your target audience that you just pissed off.
…
Currently playing Batman and Brutal Legend, both very good games.
On the horizon:
Forza 3 (360)
Dragon Age: Origins (PC)
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PC)
Left 4 Dead 2(PC)
Assassin’s Creed II(360)
Further out:
Fallout: New Vegas sometime 2010
Star Wars: The Old Republic sometime 2010?
Mechwarrior ???
I think that’s it. Busy times, but that’s good, right?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was on the list, but has recently been crossed off. Removal of dedicated servers/mods means it’s not worth my time
I may be overreacting somewhat, by the way. I guess we’ll just have to see.
It’s unlikely they just gave utter shit multiplayer where it picks a random player to attempt to host a server like OFP2 did. Instead, it sounds like they’re just going to be doing all the hosting on their own servers. That does have serious disadvantages, but it doesn’t make the multiplayer useless.
COD4 isn’t a game known for its modding community like some other games are. I played on stock COD4 servers most of the time, with the only difference being game mode, server size, hardcore/non hardcore, map rotation, time limit, score limit, etc. Those are important distinctions, but if they provide a wide range of different types of servers with different sizes, map rotations, and game modes then it may not be too horrible. I still don’t like it - dedicated servers provide the ability to have different rule sets, maps, game modes, mods… communities tend to build around them as like-minded people find servers with the sort of rules and players they like to play. A matchmaking system (even with preferences) is not community building.
So… this is shitty news, but I may have overreacted. The multiplayer may turn out to be okay, and not DOA like the clusterfuck they did with operation flashpoint 2. I’ll have to wait and see.
Well, they want $60 for Modern Warfare 2 on Steam right now. They really are trying hard to get us to not buy this game, aren’t they?
The problem is that without dedicated severs, multiplayer for MW2 is going to stay up for only as long Activison feels like it. Dedicated servers expands the multiplayer lifespan for any game indefinitely. Expect MW2 servers to disappear right around the time Modern warfare 3 is released. [Tin Foil Hat] And when all servers are owned by Activison, they have total control over your gaming. Better not do anything to piss them off or you might see your multiplayer privileges revoked. [/Tin Foil Hat]
No mod support also means that any new content is going to be in the form of official chargeable DLCs.
This is assuming they host their own servers. I can’t imagine they’re dumb enough to try to force us to use some sort of console style peer to peer/client listen server model of multiplayer garbage, but then again Activision is doing some all star dumb lately. I would suicide bomb them if they pulled that.
Quick heads up, just noticed that steam has arma 2 on sale for $25 (half off) as a weekend sale. Which means it’ll only be for a few more hours at most I think. I’m going to take a leap and hope they fixed some of the technical problems with patching and go ahead and grab it.
I’m watching a live stream of someone playing the modern warfare 2 single player campaign who acquired the game early somehow.
It looks amazing, better than the first. This game could easily be the best arcade shooter ever had they not totally shit the bed on the multiplayer.
I started watching in the middle of the campaign so I’m not sure what the story is… I know whatever explanation they give for the scenario that leads to fighting in Washington DC will be comically stupid, but I probably won’t care since it looks so awesome.
There is one little gem which may have fallen off lots of people’s radar - Divine Divinity 2. The first game was a Diablo-like with lots of quests and NPC interactions. The sequel is more of Mass Effect-like fighting RPG, and get this, you get to morph between a dragon and a human! Out in Dec 2010
Starcraft II is rumoured to be out in 2010. I am still hoping that D3 comes out in 2010, but I am no terribly excited.
Likewise, I am looking forward to Mass Effect 2
Missed the edit window. There is alsoRuse, for PC, PS3 and Xbox360.. It is a macro-level RTS where you can zoom out, and everything becomes a war-game table, where units are shown as models on the table. You just specify targets to attack and the unit will engage. I really love games which allow you to easily plan such manuevers.
I’m looking forward to Darkest of Days and Tropico 3. No release date for either in Australia, unfortunately.
Of the games being discussed, so far Operation Flashpoint 2 has dissapointed me (but there’s a lot of potential there - if they fix it through DLC/patches or user generated content it could be great), mw2 was huge dissapointment with gimped multiplayer - which could also be easily fixed later, but I doubt it. So far only L4D2 has lived up to - and exceeded - my expectations.
I hear pretty much universal praise for dragon age, but I haven’t tried it yet.
A game I didn’t mention looking forward to, but caught me by surprise, was Borderlands. It’s surprisingly fun.
Did the games you were looking forward to come out? Did they meet your expectations? Anything new to put on the list?
