Since we are moving to a new board software I thought perhaps that TPTB could perhaps take into consideration the stress and anxiety that the last 4 months have caused us all across the world and perhaps consider a blanket amnesty to all warnings in that timeframe. Since this is my idea my warning should remain. In these crazy times simple acts of kindness can be powerful. How does the rest of the board feel about this?
Looking at warnings for the last three months, I don’t see a lot of evidence that many were due to people losing their temper due to stress and anxiety. For the most part, it’s the same people receiving the same kinds of warnings for the same stuff they were doing before the pandemic began.
I got my first and only warning (undeserved, of course :)) during this time, and even I think this is a dumb idea. There always something causing someone stress. That shouldn’t be an excuse.
How many warnings does one get before being banned?
People here get PLENTY of chances to straighten their shit up. In fact, so much so, people here don’t get banned until it’s waaay over due by months and years even.
The LAST thing we need is more leeway.
“Stress and anxiety” shouldn’t be a reason for violating board rules. Period.
I think TPTB are a little kinder than that. While I can’t think of any specific examples, I’m sure there have been times when posters with a history of decency who went off the rails were treated leniently (a note instead of a warning, or a rescinded warning) when it was obvious their behavior was an aberration resulting from stress, especially if they explained and apologized.
Still, although I applaud the good-hearted intent behind madsircool’s idea, I agree it doesn’t seem necessary.
The rules should be applied consistently, regardless of stress. IMO.
Ah, but is this not a time when peace and love and forgiveness are called for?
And with the impending transfer to the new message board, this can be an opportune time to wipe the entire warning history clean and start afresh!
Namaste!
This is a terrible idea.
Much as I would love to have my most recent warning rescinded, which this would do, I have to come out against this idea. Sure, there’s been a ton of stress, anxiety, fear, etc. but that’s not a good enough reason to break the rules.
I vote no.
I think warnings since the start of the lockdown should stand. However, we should announce that, starting now, any warnings issued until the lockdown is fully over in all states will be wiped out in a mass ex-post-facto amnesty. What could go wrong?
If we do this, the date that it happens should be some time in the future. That way, we can all act with impunity until that point in time knowing it will all be swept away. So basically “The Purge.”
Do we know if official warnings will transfer to the new platform? If not, June 18 may become SDMB International Amnesty Day for all.
Oh HELL no. Shodan doesn’t get to come back via revoked warnings. He earned that several times over.
Keep in mind, warnings don’t have direct consequences in themselves. When we decide whether to suspend or ban someone, we look at what their history is, and that’s when we take into account context and circumstances. We don’t ban for warnings; we ban for a pattern of warnings. Someone who’s usually fine with the rules, who one time in ten years is stretched too thin and loses their temper, isn’t really in danger of getting banned.
Yes. Warnings generate a post in the mod forums, and those will transfer over. And of course the post with the original warning will remain as well. I’ll have to check if warnings are registered in the user profile also as they are now.
What a ridiculous idea. We’ve all been under the same stress.
How many warnings has BigT had?
None of your beesniss.
Some things are “instaban”-worthy; for example, threatening legal action against the site. Other things are rather clear. The warning I got was clear but I still feel the rule I violated protects trolls who are maniuplative. That being said, you are correct; we have plenty of chances to striaghten up.
I’m curious now who has the record for warning before getting banned (or still not banned).
