Psych returns!

The new season of Psych premiered last night! I am so happy to have this show back after a longer-than-usual hiatus.

Without spoiling anything, I give the episode a B. Decent, some good laughs, though I thought they forced it a little bit, particularly with the “diplomatic immunity” stuff. (Though the Lethal Weapon reference was excellent). My biggest problem was too much time on Shawn/Juliet and not enough on Shawn/Gus.

Minor gripes aside, it’s nice to have the wittiest show on TV back!

Aw man! I thought you meant the show starring Hank Azaria. Only now that I think about it, that wasn’t named Psych, that was named Huff.
Never mind.

I’ve been waiting a long time for this! Got it on DVR.

By the by, the “Ion” cable network is showing old Psych episodes that I’ve never seen, usually in blocks of three or four episodes on Friday and Saturday nights.

Didn’t there used to be a show with that name? I’m pretty sure there was a long, long time ago. It was about a detective pretending to be psychic. Is the new show similar?

Very glad to have Psych back! I particularly liked the bit when Lassie had Shawn hooked up to the lie detector and Shawn used the L-word when talking about Juliet, and everyone in the room leaned in closer to look at the needle. Ha!
And then when Lassie hooked himself up to it at the end to show Shawn how serious he was.

I agree that I would have liked even more Shawn/Gus interaction.

I especially liked the flashback in this one. Placed at the end rather than the beginning, punctuating things nicely.

You’re thinking of The Mentalist.

Don’t be the other guy from Wham!

Yeah, that was a good bit, but the set-up for it is a good example of what I meant by “forced.” Shawn has to suddenly get all upset at Lassiter and “out of control” to let that slip, but it didn’t come from anywhere. It was like he was told: “And now you need to get flustered so you accidentally spill the beans on the detector, so we can get this funny moment.” Usually the writing is more subtle than that.

Anyway, enough griping from me. This is supposed to be a celebratory thread

Anyone notice the bratty British kid played the Italian kid from Modern Family that kissed the middle girl at the dude ranch? His accent in that one wasn’t any better.

And once again I forgot to look for the pineapple.

Don’t be this crevice in my arm.

I was okay with it, but that may have been because James Roday sold that scene pretty well. He and Dule Hill are just awesomely gifted actors.

I did think that his attempt to explain away the incriminating embassy photo was a bit strained though. It may have worked, but I think the whole situation is still like to raise people’s doubts.

I’ve heard it both ways.

No, that was his partner, Ovaltine Jenkins.

They plan to have a number of special guests this season. Malcolm McDowell is just the first.

Oh, and Gus has a “love interest” this season.

Where was the pineapple in this episode?

Psych is one of the few shows that I’m totally cool with have guest stars. It just fits the show.

Same with product placement not bothering me, at least when Shawn does it, because he’s totally the kind of guy that would say, “I’m going to enjoy a delicious and refreshing Sprite.”

Don’t forget Atia from Rome.

It also showed that Henry is ten times the cop that Lassiter is. And so, of course, is Shawn.

About two months ago I started Sons of Anarchy and Psych on Netflix Instant specifically because they were over and done with so I could watch them at my leisure. A while back I was a bit surprised to see the Sons on the cover of a magazine and realized that the soonest I’ll be able to ‘catch up’ is next season. So, whatever.

Now this. About two weeks ago I was looking for something unrelated on my TiVo when I stumbled onto Psych. I no that S5 hadn’t been released on Instant yet so I figured I’d go through what was on TV and save the Season 5 stuff to watch after I get through everything else. Imagine my surprise when I find stuff that said 2011 and I find that it’s Season 6. Both shows aren’t over yet. Luckily, Instant dropped S5 about a week ago and I got caught up and finally watched the first S6 episode today.

I’m glad to finally be caught up. As much as I’m loving the show, it’s hard to watch 60+ formulaic episodes of the same show with little continuity and almost no arcs in very rapid succession (probably about 2 months). Spacing them out to one a week will be a nice break.
I have to say, one of the reasons I started watching this was because I heard there was a Twin Peaks episode and I was really looking forward to it. Imagine my surprise when not only was it like Twin Peaks, but they brought back so many of the original people.

I won’t comment on this episode because I’m kind of burnt out from watching so much of it lately other then to say that I’m not thrilled with the new Young Shawn.

Also, I never new (until now) that there’s a pineapple in every episode…I’m surprised that they managed to stick with a gag that long. It seems like a lot of their running jokes only seem to stick around for a half season or so. And with that, I have to give kudos to whomever does their opening sequence, it changes ever few episodes, I’m sure that takes a lot of work.

He’s a better actor than the other Shawn, but it is definitely hard to get used to the change.
