Pub Trivia in Seattle 2006: Electric Boogaloo

I assumed the Old Pequliar.

I know I haven’t shown up for a while - but I’m in.

Hey, as Brokeback Mountain has taught us, love is love. My ice pack takes away my pain, is always there for me, and has a really, really nice personality.

How about I call someone, most likely my brother, at 7:45 and give a definate answer? I hope it’s good, because that’s what’s happening.

I really want to, but my friend’s Mom when into the hospital this morning, so I told her I could watch her kids so she could be with her Mom. It’s been a long struggle, that may be nearing it’s end. If I can make it so she can spend the time, I’ll make the sacrifice.
Sorry. I will be there, where ever there is, next week, for sure.
Sorry, if I messed up the teams.

Oh, good heavens, no. Really, once it’s settled that people are showing up, the teams will take care of themselves. Regardless, charitable kid-watching easily takes precedence over quiz night.

You’ve got nothing to apologize for. We look forward to seeing you when we see you!

And like I said, i like to spend time on my couch with an ice pack just as much as I like feeling less than intelligent in public. My knee is always up for couch time!

I’m out tonight, but I am generally in favor of trying out the Old Pequliar. I just don’t know if I’ll ever make Tuesday nights – they tend to be busier for me.

We need to get more Monday night enthusiasm going here! And/or, we need to exchange phone numbers or daytime email addresses, so that we’re not dependent on everyone checking the thread.

What show is Cervaise in, again? Should we all try to go the same night and heckle?

Picasso at the Lapin Agile by Steve Martin.

Yes.

No.

I’ll be happy to do Mondays sometimes come March. I do prefer the Emigrant to the George & Dragon these days.

Horton Smurfs a Who squeaked through with first place in our inaugral trip to the Old Pequliar, winning $100 for the team. It was a tiebreaker, and thanks to our better guess of how many times Bob Hope’s hosted the Oscars, we took the big money home.

My initial impression: George and the where now?

80 questions. 2 hours. Instead of down time between rounds, you trade answer sheets and grade each other. Everything moves along quickly. Rounds have themes – geography, history, pop culture, movies.

The food is good, there’s cider (Strongbow) on tap, and even with 17 teams, the place didn’t feel like a really, really loud sauna.

We’ll be going again. Though I wouldn’t rule out returning to the Emigrant for Monday nights, either.

I thought I’d see if anyone checked in. That sounds great. Now the important information…Is there safe parking for my 'Vette? I drove the truck on Monday, and felt like I was parking an 18 wheeler.
Congratulations on the win. I knew you guys were good. I may be a liability!
The questions Monday were… Hard! (and he’s kinda hard to understand.)
Hope to see everyone next Monday.
How will I recognize you? Is **Horton Smurfs a Who ** the team name both places?

Congratulations, you magnificent bastards.

('nurse — the team name is usually a smurf pun, the stupider the better.)

Felicitous smurfage to you all. I should be able to get pequliar next Tuesday.

I’m going to amend this. Thanks to Interrobang!?’s better guess of how many times Bob Hope’s hosted the Oscars. We were asked to pick one rep for the team and everyone immediately pointed to him.

Had a great time. Quieter, more fun, wonderful time. And $3 Newcastles!

A pleasant detail: The trivia night is sponsered by Newcastle Brown Ale, which results in the $3 price on pints of the same. They also match the entry fees, so that 17 teams put in $5 each, but there was supposedly $170 in the offing.

However, I’m uncertain of the OP’s math. They gave us $100, 2nd place got $40, and 3rd got $10. (That adds up to only $150.) They also gave out an Old Pequliar T-shirt, hat and some other stuff to 4th place, and a lone T-shirt to the 17th place team. Maybe the swag was paid for with the missing $20.

The two picture rounds were aggravating, because the ones we couldn’t get seemed hauntingly familiar. But the teams we scored for seemed to have trouble with the same ones. I think the picture rounds are mainly there to give the quizmaster a break in which to get another beer.

There was definitely minimal time to discuss the questions we lacked answers for, but that meant we didn’t have to sit there long on the ones we knew right away.

Oops. A few more things: It seemed just about everyone there was interested in the quiz, even if they weren’t playing, so the place was pleasantly quiet when the questions were being read.

There is an off-street parking lot next to the pub, though I didn’t really pay any attention to it.

And, as noted before, they have 3 steel tip dart boards. They also have a pool table, two video games and a pinball machine for pre-quiz entertainment.

Yes! It was so quiet, actually, that you really had to be careful about speaking too loudly when discussing answers.

And given the number of people in there, it was a lot airier and more pleasant than the cave-like atmosphere of the George & Dragon.

One thing I didn’t think to mention last night: given the 5-person limit on teams, it makes it much easier to deal with 6 or more players. Teams of 3 aren’t at a significant disadvantage, I don’t think. Or you can designate an extra person or people to just be quiet throughout the quiz, with neighboring tables keeping an ear on you.

Only possible drawback I see: we could become an Elvis/Spear Britney/Fremont Liberation Army of the new pub and annoy all the other teams. Or I’m suffering from hubris. But I suspect, given the point spread, that we’d do well on a regular basis.

Of course, if we regularly fielded two Dope teams, the rivalry would be entertaining.

At the moment, I’d definitely pick the Pequliar or the Emigrant over the G&D for future quizzes. I’m still open to looking around for variety, though.

Oh, yeah, that would be simply awful.

My first free Tuesday will be 2/14. I’m assuming people will have better things to do with their Valentine’s Day than this ;), but whatever the schedule is, I’m looking forward to getting back to it.

Which reminds me: Old Pequliar is not doing trivia that Tuesday. They’ve got a fake psychic foretelling the doom of your romance, instead.

So that may be a G&D or pub-to-be-named-later night. Or a bye week.

I’m… I’m coming. Soon. Next week.

It’s picunurse’s fault.

I don’t know when yet. But I’m coming.

Soon.
