Pub Trivia in Seattle 2006: Electric Boogaloo

We ended up with 7 people and 2 teams: John Cougar Mellensmurf (Cervaise, amarinth, and me) and Smurf Blitzer (stargazer, Saltire, Anastasaeon, and picunurse).

JCM finished in 3rd place, winning $20. Smurf Blitzer ended up in, um, 5th? 6th? Not 4th, because they didn’t win swag, but not far out, either.

stargazer, by the way, should be justifiably proud for getting a movie question that Cervaise and I answered confidently but incorrectly. Curse us for not seeing Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants!

Also, stargazer is planning on actually organizing trivia nights beyond the boards, involving calendars and email addresses and non-last-minute planning. Sounds crazy, but it might work out.

Saltire, by the way, what was that slang word from NB you mentioned to me last night? Though I didn’t recognise it, I want to ask my mother. It may be part of her colloquial more than mine. I grew up with a buncha ninnies.

Sorry, they started flinging trivia at us and I never got back to the topic I’d started.

The term was ‘to manus’. I’ve been told that it is an obscure bit of New Brunswick slang that means ‘to be no good, despicable, unworthy’. It was apparently inspired by the criminal antics of my great-grandfather, Charles ‘Mickey’ McManus, who was born in Saint John.

That would be really cool… if only I’d heard the term before. Degrees of separation, and all that. However, it might be a Saint John thing; I was raised about an hour’s travel outside of Saint John, so their slang is a bit different than ours.

Now I’m curious. It may be a word I’ve heard before, but, not knowing what it was, just let it slide by me.

I’ll mention this next time I make contact with the mother unit.

Hey now, don’t make it sound like I’ve seen it! The funny thing about that is that I’ve never seen any of the movies that were on the list – I’ve seen about 5 minutes of Billy Madison, and it happened to be the 5 minutes that had Bradley Whitford on. And I saw either a commercial or a review of Sisterhood, and it also had him in there. Pure coincidence.

See? I’m a natural event planner.

So, how about this: if you are/might be/want to be involved in these here trivia nights, send me an email at stargazer_503 AT yahoo DOT com. Put “SDMB Trivia” or somesuch in the subject line. I will compile an email list, and send an email out to everyone. Then we can all email each other (in addition to posting in the thread) about who will be where and when for trivia, so that we are not all reliant on checking the thread. To that end, it would be good if you would give me an email address that you check fairly regularly, not your spam collector address that you only clear every couple of weeks. Also to that end, the email you get from me will NOT be from the above yahoo address – it will be from a gmail address, but it has my name in it and I don’t want to post that for all teh Internets to see.

Another idea we had last night was to make a bit more of a schedule, so that we could all plan our weeks better. For instance, maybe do Mondays at the IE on the 1st and 3rd weeks, and Tuesdays at the OP on the 2nd and 4th weeks. Or plan to do trivia on even-numbered days (which would have roughly the same effect as the 1st-week-3rd-week thing, but be easier to remember). Or something. This doesn’t mean that we couldn’t do both Mondays and Tuesdays ever, but it would mean a little less last-minute stuff, and a greater probability of having a nice-sized group. And no one being the only one to show up, as happened to picunurse last week. What do you all think?

Well, I know the survivor question would have been abou Gary Hogenboom. Too bad, I know scads about football, especially post 1989(when I started paying attention.) C’est la vie.

Grrr, the football questions. I just got into football this year, and I love it, but there is still a lot I don’t grasp yet.
When I was talking to my husband as he was going to bed last night, I asked him all the questions from that round I could remember. He knew every damn one of them without thinking. He offered to come with me next time, but I told him he was useless to me now. Sigh.

Sorry to have missed all the excitement. I know a little something about football trivia, but I stopped paying attention around 1989. So inkysplotchy and I would have made a good team.

Hoping to meet all the new grrl tryvya doprz soon.

I forgot about him. No, it was about Hasselbeck and his sister-in-law.

Well, the cool kids who signed up for the SDMB Trivia email list already got this news, but for the rest of you -

I’m out tomorrow night, but I could be available tonight. Anyone else interested?

Hm. I could have sworn there were no instructions yet on how to sign up for this trivia e/mail. So I look, and there is. Go fig.

At any rate, we won’t be making it tonight, but we do have plans to show tomorrow. So there. I told you it’d be harder to get your schedule to mesh with ours!

I got home late. It appears that no one can make tonight. I can probably do tomorrow night. I have some things to do in the afternoon, but I should be done in time.

I’m planning on trivia tonight. I’m assuming the Old Pequliar. Who else?

I’m in.

I should be there.

Can’t make it this week. Grandmama fell and hurt her ankle, so I’m going to be helping her out for a while.

Tell Grandmama to get better soon.

We’re in. Not sure what time we’ll get there. Ian, a friend of mine and Cervaise’s that most of you have met before, will be showing as well.

I have to apologize. I went to the dentist this afternoon. I got home around 5:00pm. Nitrous always makes me sleepy for a while after. I laid down for an hour’s nap and woke at 9:30pm! sorry. I hope all went well.
Next week. 'k?

No next week at the O.P., as it’s Valentine’s Day. There’ll still be the Emigrant on Monday and the G&D if people are willing though.

As for myself, Lady Cheek has already reminded me that it will be Valentine’s Day and that I am expected to do something ‘romantic.’

Yes, next week is out for me. Monday, as usual, won’t work, and Tuesday I feel like I should hang out with the women I love.

The week after that I’m out again because of a knife skills class on Tuesday night.

However, in three weeks, Tuesday is good for me again, then shortly thereafter at least some Monday nights should be available.
