Punch-Out!! Wii

Go to Youtube and search for “nigga stole my bike” for explanation of the reference.

I had fun with it. It’s not super-deep, nor is it meant to be. And Doc Louis is particularly hilarious during it as he’s batshit insane.

Thanks, I was kinda debating whether to start a thread on this myself.

I was a huge fan of the NES game, and to a somewhat lesser extent the original arcade version. It’s the kind of game I could spend all night pounding the daylights out of my hapless opponents, making a mental note to take on the World Circuit one of these days. (Hey, I was young and ambitionless then.) I did eventually beat them all, but it took a ton of time and effort, and I never got complacent against the last three opponents. (I was especially surprised by how brutal Mr. Sandman was; easily tougher than Super Macho Man, and I’m not the only one who thinks this.) It was a hell of a ride, and I felt a real sense of accomplishment when I made to the end that I never got from Super Maro Bros., Mega Man, or even The Legend of Zelda.

I don’t have a Wii, but I’m definitely checking out the gameplay videos as soon as they come out. This sounds like the kind of game where there’s going to be a LOT of one-upmanship.

Good to know that there’s a mode where the opponents are a lot tougher (this is analogous to the “Top Ranked” fights in the arcade version). The thing about the original game was that while there were 14 matches, it didn’t really get too tough until the 9th or 10th opponent, and there was only one major challenge before The Dream Fight (Sandman). Hey, I beat it…how tough could it be, really? Even Super Punch Out (a fantastic game in nearly all regards) was on the bottom-heavy side. Now it looks like we’ll finally have a chance to separate the men from the boys. Hippo actually protecting his weakness? That’s definitely a step forward.

In any event, this was a franchise that absolutely deserved to be revamped for a modern system, and I’m glad for it even if I never play it.

If there are any Manhattanites and surrounding out there, the Nintendo World store at Rockefeller Center is having a special event from 1-4pm tomorrow which will include the opportunity to watch a 32-man in-store Punch-Out!! tournament, as well as the ability to try out the game and buy it before it’s official sale date.

As mentioned, this is a reference to a well-known internet meme in which the words “nigga stole my bike” are sung repeatedly over this scene, implying that rather than being a training montage, we are actually seeing a man chase after someone who stole his bike.

It isn’t so much “protecting” as it is “poorly taping a manhole cover to.” To be fair, though, King Hippo isn’t exactly a rocket scientist.

Can you expound upon “not super-deep”? I’m not sure what you’re saying there. If you’re saying what I think you’re saying, then I’m prepared to be completely disappointed in the game.

Color us all shocked.

What do you think he’s saying?

It seems to me he’s saying “two player mode isn’t meant to be deep, but it is still fun.” I see nothing wrong with this- people are obviously going to be playing single-player more than multi-player.

Button-mashing, for the most part.

Shadow Facts**: I can’t help my response to the games I play. I’d love to be able to say that I won’t be disappointed or that I don’t expect to be, but I’d be lying.

It seems hard, and almost inconceivable, that this could get screwed up. You could change nothing about the gameplay and make the graphics better, and it’d be good.

That’s exactly what’s happening. As was said upthread, there will even be an option to play the game with the Wii Remote turned sideways and re-use the game’s NES controls exactly as they were.

And if you had actually played the game and been disappointed, I wouldn’t have said anything. Sometimes, though, it seems like you appear in every Wii thread just to…not threadshit, it’s not that bad…perhaps “threadfart” is the right term. Maybe my snark was unwarranted, but the fact that you were “prepared to be disappointed” in a Wii game you haven’t played based on comments from someone else that you were not clear about seemed pretty par for the course.

In any case, the online reviews I’ve read so far seem quite positive, and I’m really looking forward to this game.

That’s still not going to stop me from getting it opening day, if not, opening weekend.

Not with this “Giga Mac” thing. Hopefully it’s just a mode to play it in and nothing associated with the actual game.

Of course it’s just a secondary mode. As I’ve said in other threads, the number of games that are sold on their multiplayer mode first and foremost is ridiculously small.

And Shadowfacts, the reviews have been STELLAR. 1UP gave the game an A+ and IGN and GameSpot both gave it a 9.

Oh, and the game is now on sale for $40 at Amazon, so if you haven’t pre-ordered yet and you want to, you can get it for a good price.

Nope. I simply meant that the multiplayer follows the single-player pretty closely, which also isn’t super-deep. It’s still based on move recognition and countering, which is really how multiplayer should be.

sigh It’s multiplayer only dude. Would it kill you to actually be somewhat informed about the game before you start babbling your Wii drivel?

Geez, the first time I heard of it was in this thread. I get clarification now and it doesn’t sound so bad. I know I’m pretty critical of the Wii and the games that I’ve played, but you’d think that I’m directly insulting you with every post.

Oh well. We’ll see in a few days. I’m looking forward to it.

Heh, if I were actually insulted by your every post, I’d be responding a *lot * more often. I’m merely annoying by your regularly-exercised jumping to conclusions based on ignorance.

It’s fine to ask clarifying questions, but to form opinions based on the little you know? It’s just a tad annoying to read, particularly in nearly every damn Wii thread, which you seemingly feel an obligation to post to, for whatever reason.

What can I say? I love you guys.

Has anyone seen Fedor’s Punch Out?
