Punch-Out!! Wii

So, I picked the game up and have played a bit (not as much as I would like, but then what else is new?). I think I can safely say that if you liked the original, then you will like this game - it’s incredibly similar to the original, maybe even too similar (?). Well, we’ll see, I haven’t gotten that far yet.

I’ve been playing with the “classic” control, as opposed to motion control, simply because the margin for error is so small when ducking and punching. I’ll probably try the motion controls on exhibition at some point just for the hell of it, or maybe when I try 2-player mode vs. another human.

The animation is very nice, the characters just a horribly stereotyped as the original  Doc Louis’ comments are hilarious (mostly useless, occasionally helpful).

So far, I’m liking it a lot - just the welcome blast of simple nostalgic gameplay I was hoping for!

That’s where you recognize him from? Sheeeeeeeeeeeit! (Link contains swearing)

Pfff, I figure motion control is gonna be the only way I can get a challenge out of it. I was the first person in my neighborhood to beat Tyson when I was 7. People literally thought he was unbeatable, and considered getting to him finishing the game. It was like … well, like Douglas vs. Tyson when i knocked his ass out .

I got it today too and you’re right, it does feel a bit too familiar. But I’m liking it so far because Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! was one of my all-time favorites.

I hope it turns out to be a lot deeper, because I would only pay maybe 15 bucks for Mike Tyson’s Punch Out with updated graphics and motion controls.

Ditto. I’m getting it this weekend, though.

I haven’t gotten that far yet, but apparently the Title Defense mode changes everything.

And Great Tiger is completely new. While Glass Joe, Von Kaiser and King Hippo were just graphical updates, Great Tiger has a totally new moveset.

Ergo, I’m currently stuck on Great Tiger.

I found Great Tiger disproportionally difficult for his position in the first game.

Edit: JB are you using motion controls?

Great Tiger I was able to get through with one loss and one practice round to figure him out, but Soda Popinksi is absolutely kicking my ass. I get incredibly close again and again, and then all of a sudden I’m KO’d. I know what to do, but I just can’t seem to execute! :smack:

Not yet. I wanna give classic control a go first and then go back and see how motion control feels.

Classic control just feels so right in a Punch-Out!! game (although I wish the B trigger could be set to Star Punch) that I don’t want to mess with perfection.

(bolding mine)

Totally agree. For some reason, I’m having a hard time with pushing A for the star punch - I really need to concentrate on it to get it right. It would be much easier for me if it was the trigger.

Ever since the first game I saw with mappable buttons (which I think was for the SNES if I recall correctly) I’ve wondered why every game doesn’t have mappable buttons.

I got this today and am really liking it so far. The most interesting new addition to me were the punches you can only dodge in one direction- it gives a sense of “realism” in a way and adds a new bit of strategy, as you can’t just dodge punches in both directions as you were able to in the NES version.

That’s actually a carryover from Super Punch-Out!!, as is the fact that after dodging certain punches, they require a certain counterpunch from Mac.

Dodging the wrong way was definitely part of my problem with Soda Popinski, who I finally beat today (only to be KO’d in the first round by Bald Bull). I need to duck and block more, too - I’m always just going left or right. The bouts are definitely getting harder and harder - thank god for practice mode!

Who’s still playing?

I’m on Mr. Sandman and he is absolutely killing me. I’ve got the pattern down, but my fingers are not fast enough to dodge all of his punches in time. And he has five or six different attacks and I always manage to sink myself and dodge too early or too late.

But that Championship Belt will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.

I am, loving it. With Sandman, you can get into a rhythm of jabs that will counter virtually every one of his attacks–it’s easy enough to find, just start jabbing and adjust your timing until you land a hit (before he attacks) then continue jabbing at that same pace.

Another thing you can do on Sandman is, after his Dreamland Express (the 3 uppercuts), if you get a good rhythm going on your body blows, you can keep going till he goes down.

Now to remember how to spoiler things …

Got it!

I’m loving both title defense mode and the challenges. It’s interesting to go into a fight wondering how the hell you KO someone in 5 punches. Even better, is when a powered-up Glass Joe kicks your ass the first time you fight him!

This is definitely my biggest concern. The game looks good, and they changed some moves and added a little here and there, but if all it turns out to be is just that than I don’t really see it being worth a full priced $50 game.

Yeah, Sandman was demolishing me until I figured out the jab thing, then he was too easy, really. Disappointing fight, overall (i.e. it was completely impossible, then completely easy, with almost no in between).

Now Glass Joe is kicking my ass in Title Defense mode. That is really embarrassing… :o
