puppy learns a life lesson

Winston is my 10 month old beagle mix. We got him a couple months ago, at least partially to bring up the spirits of my other beagle, Nordberg, who was suffering depression after my older beagle died. The puppy is always biting and wrestling and skirmishing with Nord. Nord gets nipped 100 times a day. But she is recovered, Her tail is up and wagging again.
Yesterday a couple ground hogs got in my garden. Nord took off after one grabbed it by the neck and shook it and killed it. Winston just sat about 15 feet away with a WTF just happened. Biting and fighting can result in death? He stayed away from rough housing the rest of the day. He gave her a wide berth .
Today he is back to fighting, but still is a bit subdued.

I don’t know why I’m smiling at a story of an animal brutally killing another animal, but I am. Nord sounds like a good dog, and Winston is probably going to turn out OK too.

Lesson 2
Winston was finally feeling secure again. Nordberg was eating “log” which is what we call Van Paten compressed dog food rolls. She really loves her log. Winston not so much. She finished hers and then eyed his. He was playing with it. She saw that as disrespecting log and required her help. She waded in to take it away. He fought back and a bit of a battle went on. The cat got upset and attacked the puppy. I separated them and everybody calmed down. Winston walked up to the cat and got about 20 fast smacks in his face. He walked upstairs and jumped in bed and just laid there feeling unloved. All days are not good when you are a puppy.

Thanks for posting these. I can just picture him.

I sometimes get the feeling that puppies and kittens are born brainless and require varying degrees of whacking around to insert enough gray matter for survival.

Already did thatfor you.

awwww, poor puppers. i’m sure he is looking at you with the sad “nobody know the troubles i have” eyes.

there may have to be major puppy cuddling and squeezing.

And if there hasn’t been, there should be.

Yesterday my friends took their dogs to the local off-leash dog park, and I accompanied them. First time I’ve been there in a few years. I’ll tell ya, there’s little more stress-relieving than seeing dogs run around and playing.
