Pushing Daisies 10/24

Ned owns the pie shop, Olive works for him. The pie shop may or may not be making a profit, but Ned supplements his income from the rewards he splits with Emerson when they solve murder mysteries using Ned’s ability.

No idea where Chuck’s mom is. I suppose she’s dead, because after her father died she went to live with the aunts, where if they’d been divorced, she would have gone to live with her mom.

Why is bee-keeping illegal inside city limits?

It is clear to me that the “low budget” look is intentional, and meant to heighten the fairy tale nature of the world of the show. The plane crashing into the building was clearly a model crashing into a model and was intended to look that way. It was straight out of King Kong. Now, I’m watching it in HD, so maybe that makes a difference, but the art direction/cinematography of the show screams “fake” (in a good way).

There has been no mention of it on the show so far. They glossed over this fact. A small Google search turned up no information except that others want to know the same thing you do.

The Aunts appear to be her Dad’s sisters as all three are Charles.

I wish I could be more help.

ShadowFacts, I love your username.

This is the first time I’ve heard the song. I thought Olive and the sister made it up. I need to get out more.

Heh! It’s originally by They Might Be Giants, from their 1990 album Flood. Bird House in Your Soul and Boss of Me are probably their best-known songs, but they’ve also done a weird little thing called Particle Man and a cover of the VERY old song Istanbul (Not Constantinople) that are well-known by a large number of music geeks. TMBG is a very quirky alt-rock duo who actually fit right in with this show…

My favorite line of the night was, as usual, Emerson’s. When the historical society lady fell asleep in the middle of a sentence: “Now, that’s narcolepsy. Necrophilia is the other thing, right?”

:o

Thanks!

“…a life of windmillery”. Classic.

Ah, so that’s what he said. There were a couple times I didn’t quite catch something that was said, it was either said too quiet or too fast.
As for keeping bees in the city, I think the bees might get really cranky about not having any flowers around. I know Chuck mentioned planting some wildflowers on the roof but what are the bees supposed to do until then?

How far can bees fly? You mean to tell me there are no potted plants, no parks, no backyard gardens, no window boxes within buzzing distance? Or is it a matter of not enough flowers near enough to sustain the hives?

I love this show. It really gets me for most of the reasons mentioned above. And I know it is part fantasy and all that. But it really skeezed me out that the convict, who murdered two people, was portrayed as a sympathetic character.

And the plane into the building thing? Still too soon.

It has me wondering whether I will watch future episodes.

Well, he only accidentally murdered two people.

He didn’t kill anybody. The plane crashed because the pigeon flew into the prop. He hijacked the plane and stole that other guy’s identity, but he didn’t kill anybody, except if that state has one of those “death during the commission of a felony” laws.

I think it was to show that she and wooden-armed Lem were meant to be together.

I’ll admit, the crop duster crashing into the apartment building didn’t bother me at all. I didn’t even think 9/11 when I saw it, only made the connection when other people brought it up. It was six years ago. Not to diminish the tragedy, but lots has happened since then.

I am so glad to know it’s aired every Tuesday on CTV… my Wednesday nights are much less free, and it isn’t always easy to catch it! We only caught the last 15 minutes or so on Wednesday, but it was just as entertaining the second time around! I wish we could see it on HD; we only bought this TV about 3 years ago, and at the time couldn’t afford it. It must be amazing. My parents have HD… maybe one day I’ll catch it at their house!

It’s usually on the ABC (?) website, streaming. In HD. link

Agreed. I don’t understand that reaction at all given the nature of the show, and the manner in which the crash was portrayed. I mean, if it was Law & Order or CSI or something, sure.

But, whatever, to each his/her own, not trying to criticize anyone.

My favorite line (the one mentioned above is a very close second)

“One Armed Bitch is Fast!”

Yeah, I never made the connection until I read this thread. We’re well past the time that a plane crash in this context should be a problem.

Different times for different people. I found no problem with them, but as a point of reference some Germans Jews hated Hogan’s Heroes as they thought it made light of German Concentration Camps.

Now Hogan’s Heroes showed the Prisoners of War always getting the best of the dumb & foolish Germans. It was obviously a POW camp and showed the SS to be ultimately evil in their rare appearances, but still some felt it was too close and too soon.

So I understand why for some people it was too close and too soon, even though I personally made no connection.

We are watching the second episode again. It is just as good the second time. This show is simple amazing, poetic, whimsical and ultimately lovely.

The scene recounting Janine and Bernard first sighting of each other is simply incredible and beautiful writing.

The narrator recounts that: “Bernard remembered her hair Redder, her sweater tighter and her smile, … well her smile he remembered just right”
That line is so amazing to me. If it was from the Princess Bride, we would be repeating it constantly on this board.

The music underscores every scene to perfection.
This is not a TV show as much a series of miniature movies.

Lines likes this are classic:
Narrator: At that moment, the Pie Maker felt a mixture of happiness and trepidation.
Ned: Why is it always a mixture?

This is quickly becoming my favorite show since Northern Exposure.
