I fully expect that this will be a very short thread.
My husband and I have been watching the repeats for years, sometimes two episodes daily. It’s on after the news when we’re fixing dinner, and again at 10 p.m.
We know from the opening scene which episode we’re watching but my husband likes that he knows the lines before they’re spoken – thinks it’s good brain exercise.
I’ve started to hate the show, but I’ll still watch the Candy episodes – April Bowlby is just so damn cute. I also kinda like the episodes with Melissa, Alan’s receptionist. As a one-off, we like Orson Bean as a wronged husband and the one where Evelyn is the leader of a coven, and any episode where Berta is the focus.
But if the arc is Evelyn’s romance with Robert Wagner, Charlie and the judge, or Chelsea, we’re out.
What are your most and least favorite story arcs/episodes/characters?
Do you think Jon Cryer will find work when the show is finally over?
Have you checked out Charlie Sheen’s other show, Anger Management? It’s not terrible.
Berta. I’ve been a fan of Conchata Ferrell ever since seeing her on The Hot L Baltimore, and Heartland showed she was a hell of an actress. It’s not a role worthy of her talent, but she at least gets the most out of all her lines.
My favourite episode(s) were the two cross-overs with CSI.
On one of the DVDs, both sets of writers say how hard it was to write in the other genre (comedy / crime), but how they supported each other to make it succeed.
April Bowlby is indeed cute (and hot!)
As you may be suffering from overload, can I recommend the Big Bang Theory?
It’s also written by Chuck Lorre and I find it immensely enjoyable.
My husband’s absolute favorite episode is when Candy is playing Heart and Soul on the piano and singing Christmas carols. I mostly like Berta and I can’t stand the kid. Honestly, if it wasn’t for my husband controlling the remote, I don’t think I’d ever watch it - the “humor” is just too juvenile. I can’t believe a show with such limited substance has lasted so long.
Yeah, yeah, I know… lots of crappy shows had long runs…
We like the show a lot and are not afraid to admit it - very funny.
I thought it would suck when Ashton Kutcher took over, but it didn’t.
This season, they are bringing in a girl - so I guess it will be Two Men And A Half Chick? Hmm…that could be somewhat mis-leading…
Jon Cryer is an amazing talent - he is fairly fearless when making a fool of himself, and that alone takes a certain talent.
No particular episodes we didn’t like - I wasn’t a big fan of the character of Rose, although she was a good actress.
Berta is always a hoot - as well as the mother.
I have found it funny that Ashton’s character is supposedly this super-hung, rich stud - and yet it just came out in the press that two of his ex’s (including Demi) have made comments that would imply Ashton was, uh, coming up short in the crotch department despite the comments on the show.
Still - well written, consistently funny and glad to see it come back for another season - will be interesting to see how the new girl turns out as the replacement for Jake (who will only appear very seldom, if ever, on the upcoming shows…).
Spoiler for upcoming season:
The new girl is supposedly Charlie’s daughter - and a lesbian - and quite beautiful…
I have caught the show more often than I care to admit - and I find it to be a lot funnier than I ever expected it to be. I might actually laugh a couple of time per episode. It’s still not on my list of things to watch, but if I’m just killing time I might choose it over other stuff that’s on at the time. I think I’ve seen only two of the episodes after Sheen left, though.
I thought the episode with the witches’ coven was hilariously clever. None of the other ones stand out for me.
It is a Chuck Lorre show. The same sharp, very crisp writing with jokes hitting perfect timing as Big Bang Theory (and, earlier, Dharma and Greg). Lorre is a comedic genius. I think he stumbled a bit on Mike and Molly - either that or he’s not as involved with that show.
Oh, and to the OP - yes, Anger Management is not horrible. Charlie Sheen has a certain deadpan comedic talent, and the other cast members are not bad. I just hope he doesn’t screw it all up again.
I don’t watch the episodes with Ashton Kutcher, only the ones with Charlie Sheen. The title of each episode is a weird line within the show, and I always get a kick out of reading the title and then listening for where the line occurs (“Fish in a Drawer”, “Squab, Squab, Squab”, “David Copperfield Slipped Me a Roofie”, “Taterhead is our Love Child”).
I do laugh out loud, even though the humor is juvenile and crude. I admit it! But I have to change the channel if my 10-year-old comes into the room.
I like the episode where Charlie is dating the woman who looks like his mother. Especially the restaurant scene with the waiter. “Many forms indeed. I thought you were joking.”
So, Ashton Kutcher replaced Charlie Sheen what, two years ago? And yet all the reruns I see are the ones when Sheen was still on the show. Have the Kutcher episodes not made it to syndication yet?
When I watch the show, which is infrequent, it is because Rose is onscreen. That’s partly because she has great wheels but mostly because I find her amusing.
I shouldn’t comment because of my irregular watching of the show, but I’ve never got how Charlie is supposed to be such a bad person. Alan is a mooch and a creep who in a just world would have been fed alive to a Wendigo; by comparison Charlie is St. Francis.
